People bash it in reference to them in groups and in comparison to other more suited DPS classes.
Plate is nice, but in most cases, if everyone is doing their job, the amount of armor you have as a DPSer shouldn't matter since you shouldn't be taking hits. This is their trade off. They gain that survivability, but give up significant DPS for it, which generally speaking, isn't always the most ideal setup for groups. Why take a class with somewhat spiky and mediocre DPS when you could take a steady high dps class?
Don't get me wrong, I'm a fan of slow and steady as opposed to balls out wild group, but from my experience, people aren't always too accepting of a hybrid class acting like a hybrid class.

Retribution is really gear dependant (more so then warriors), a pally with good gear should be able to do good DPS but its really spiky
For alliance the weapon is the most important, a slow 3.6 or higher weapon with high top end will get the most out of SoC and CS, Blood Elves can use a little bit faster weapons with Seal of Blood..
With the new quest exp changes Retribution will probably be the quickest way to level instead of AoE grinding but still a lot of quests need for you to kill x for y or just kill x quests so AoE as Prot should be pretty good as well

According to recount I had a average of 610dps within a half clear of Karazhan today. I have lots to improve in my gear from Zul'Aman, badge rewards and some reputation grinding.
Retribution Paladins usually get mocked because there are so many, sorry, but awful ones out there. Once you find a good Retribution Paladin to a party you'll get amazed of what they bring to the party.

If the pally is just in a regular group that seems right, with Windfury and other buffs that damage can skyrocket, a shaman is a really the Ret pally best friend

In melee DPS group (Enhancement Shaman, Arms warrior, myself and two rogues) I did ~1.2k DPS without using anti-undead/demon spells, thats with Judgement of the Crusader, Seal of Command then regular rotation of Judgement of Command, Seal of Command Crusader Strike, Consecration and repeat. That was before I upgraded Lolhowl with Savagery to Soul Cleaver with Executioner. in 2/5 S3, 1/5 S2, 1/5 S1 and some SSC/TK gear.
