I'm guessing because Imp Gouge gives you enough time to re-stealth if the Gouge doesn't break.
No, it take 7 seconds to get out of combat, improved gouge last 5.5sec, so they still have time to get you back in combat.

It takes five seconds to drop combat, not seven. Only take improved gouge if you're going combat mutilate. It beats lightning reflexes.
