I have some love for paladins and druids because they are the true hybrids. Tired of healing ? Go prot or feral for tanking. Tired of tanking ? Go feral ( cat ), boomkin or ret for dps.
They also have at least 2 viables specs for pvp: feral, resto and boomkin/ret and holy.
The only downsides in my opinions is dailies will be a
little
longer with a holy pal/resto druid than with a resto shaman or a holy/disc priest.

I disagree, the best single target healers are disc priests.

the other day i wuz just cruising around orgrimmar and started healing a lvl 80 paly i gave him about 2 heals 3k each (i am a lvl 50 druid) and then he started healing me with flash heal
1st heal : 7 k
2nd heal :11 k
3rd heal :14 k
4th heal : 28 k
OMFGROFLMAO so i think any class is good for healing if the gear and the player and talents are in good balance

Why doncha roll a Blood DK and hit a 20% hp heal every 30 seconds?
You can't get everything you want.
I like shammies for healing.
Priest = Alright at both AoE/Single Target Healing
Shaman = Excellent Raid Healer, fair single target healer.
Druid = Everlasting mana, HoTs, not a lot of AoE Healing.
Pally = Excellent Single Target Healer, raid healing, not so much.
Ok don't listen to this guy, he doesn't know what he's talking about.
Priests and druids are the best aoe/raid healers with CoH and WG/hot spam.
I don't know much about shamans and i'm not gonna pretend i do. Paladins are great tank healers, and can raid heal decently.
? He actually hit the nail pretty well on the head.
Priests have large single target heals as holy or great mitigation of damage + reasonable single target heals/ also have circle of healing, prayer of healing, and Prayer of Mending to cover aoe (factoring in nerf as well they will still be excellent raid healers and perfectly good tank heals)
Shamans have chain heal making them great raid heals, they can heal a tank well also
Druid hots hots hots they too can go either way, tank or raid, most would generally prefer to be on the tank but i've never seen one have a problem on raid heals-especially if a fight requires a lot of movement
Paladins STILL are not going to be anyones choice for raid healing, can they do it in a pinch? yes, but they are by no means optimal for that job, that said they kick hind end at healing a tank and offtank at the same time---something you won't see any other healers doing.
Really you should pick whatever you think sounds fun. You should be able to find a place in a raid/guild/group as a healer no matter which class. So some other things to think about:
Priest: Full on cloth caster, soloing as holy in wotlk isnt all that horribly painful, you can do dailies although you might opt to skip some that require alot of grinding simply because offensive abilities can drain mana pretty quickly and you'll be drink breaking unless theres some travel between mobs. You have Shackle Undead and may need to help CC in some dungeons but it is very rare. You can go shadow if you change your mind, but expect to get bugged by pugs.
Shaman: Tend to have a pretty easy time soloing even as resto (compared to other healers) however remember you will be juggling totems, keeping track of who needs what and tossing them out before pulls. You will have hex so you can help with emergency CC if needed. Can respec dps if it doesnt work out and shaman dps is generally well accepted in raids for those nice buff totems :)
Druid: One of the harder healing specs to solo with, dailies may be a little painful. A little lacking in emergency CC manouvers but if crud hits the fan bear form can sometimes save your fuzzy fanny long enough for an offtank to pick something up. You bring a nice buff to any group in any role and it is the most versatile class in the game with 0 competition.
Paladin: Melee in plate-with heals! Thanks to 3.0 holy paladins arent in nearly as painful of a situation as they used to be. Grinding and dailies are tolerable, although you will still take longer than any dps and will need to drink quite a bit. CC and life-saving moves once your bubble is blown are slim (a short duration stun) but that bubble can definitely save your life-the downside, its' also your only aggro drop. You will have single target/2target heals but only 1 instacast and no real group heals (although one heal can be glyphed to make for a minor group heal) You can always go tank or dps if it gets stale although paladin tanks are generally better accepted if you will be puggging. (Just as a side note and this is ONLY my personal experience and opinion, paladin was the worst for just getting burned out on due to the high intensity attention required, you're on the edge of your seat but lack minor panic buttons to deal with problems--you do however get 1 major panic button but it has a long cooldown)

Well it simple really
Paladins are tank healers in a raid setting
Shaman are raid healers
Druid are raid healers
priest can do both but since CoH its raid healing
I'd personally go with Paladin if i was to leveling a healer it would be a paladin

Within the next huge patch, two talent trees should be available.
Since all Healers aren't 100% healers, this should grant the ability to swap between roles.
Which healer are the best? Impossible to answer.
All healers have their 'cons & pros', and since 50% of the replies are about pros & cons for each and every healing class, I won't.
Good luck,
Teradon, Druid of Bronzebeard.

In my experience and opinion, druids make terrible healers only if the player isn't anticipating what could happen. My druid (healer and DPS) runs with another druid who tanks and does feral. We haven't died very much except for in the lower levels when mana was low, pots weren't much to be found and I was still getting used to the way WOW plays. Personally, I find druids to be a bit like the nature + combat mages in DS1 and 2, and I have always been comfortable with playing them which probably helps quite a bit when it comes to the druid.
I've found a way to play that allows me to both assist and heal my tank without causing him issues during mobs/instances. I think it all depends on having the right talent points to be most effective as a healer, knowing your spells inside out, what combos work best, keeping an eye on your tank's target(s) and using best judgment on when you have enough mana to also DPS without messing up a heal that will be needed in a minute or so. There were times when I got more interested in the fighting (well, it IS fun!) and my tank died as result, so I learned my lesson: A good healer should always watch their targets, along with their targets' target, anticipate imminent death and get the heals out in time! When my tank wants me to DPS immediately in a mob, he gives me the target. If not, I just heal him until the mob gets low enough that I can pick off the ones with little health left while he goes after the one with the most.
It works brilliantly, specially now that I have in-fight mana pots to help save the day. Running a healer and a tank who play well together also means that we can find instances nearly everywhere we go.

there is no best healer its justy accordinmg to the typer of heal your best at, and like most me its discipline priest anf i will never change it unless we get nerfed extremely bad and if it happens goodbye wow hello everquest!
-resto druid- does great for group healing your like the behind the scenes healer, they are amazing for group healz so resto for group and the tree forms unique. if you apply the HoTs right you do great. its a good choice if u like group healing its a little more complex but its worth it .
-holy priest- this is really good the classic healer can heal great for raids and groups but holy pallies and discipline priests hold the role of tank healing. they have a HoT lots of AoE healz and slow heals for one target so you got plenty of unilty its as good choice if you like raiding. it might be harder to heal tank but you still have the tools. they are the jack of all trades they are the most popular kind of healer.
-discipline priest- this is the best single target healer in the game and you can group heal very good too raidings a little harder but you can raid if you want still its just not as easy to raid as disc. i love disc because of penance, grace, and mana efficiency.
-resto shaman- this is a great raid healer i mean really good, but not so good for tank healing you are great for multitarget with shammy its a good choice for multi target healing.
-and holt pallaidin-well this is my least favorite but they are also good healers they make great tank healers even though they lack alot of the spells discipline has they have the most mana efficiency they are not a good choice for raid like disc but you still can it is VERY hard to raid as a holy palldin from what i hear and the lack HoTs but still nice tank healer.
pick whatever you like best idk why i don't like holy palladins i think they are the bad choice and disc is the best but thats just my oppinion they are all nice
sorry for the long post theres maintenance so im really bored.
