Hybrid Mage

I'm relatively new to WoW and even less experienced at playing a mage. I recently decided to play a mage as my main, and had planned to spec as fire, and then respec as frost later on. However, I have had so much fun with fire, I didn't want to give it up. Also, I didn't want to become another cookie-cutter 17/0/44 frost mage, and so I was looking for something different that might be fire based, but incorporated some of the survivability of the other schools.

I really want to avoid this becoming another "rate my build" thread, so I don't want to get into too many specifics, but I was considering a hybrid build incorporating all 3 schools. My thinking is that I could take enough arcane talents to get ICS and PoM. Then I could take Icy Veins and some other rooting abilities from frost. (I'd take fire down to blazing speed). I'm hoping that this would give me the ability to hit quickly and survive a bit longer, but I'm worried that I may regret not having the deeper tree talents of any one tree.

Has anyone out there tried anything like this? How viable is it for PvP?
