How to get geared enough for heroics?

Most quest gear is ilvl 437. The requirement for heroics is 440. A few quests give blue ilvl 450 rewards. Are people forced to get crafted gear to be able to do heroics?

Not forced; but if you don't want to run instances, it's a nice alternative.

gear is iLevel 450 in normal mode, so you might be able to hit the 440 iLevel requirement for Heroics but running that for gear.

will allow you too buy 450 gear with Justice points

Scenarios are also a decent way to get some gear. 463s drop from the bags that you earn after finishing a Scenario.

Brewfest trinkets are quick and easy. Grab a couple, just for good measure.

You don't necessarily need to buy crafted gear. Now with a recent hotfix gear purchased with
Justice Points
(which you may have already stocked up if you were around long enough in Cata and not brand new) is ilvl 458. That and some of the other suggestions here should help you over the hurdle to start heroics.

The requirement for heroics has been changed to 435. Quite easily.
