I understand the reluctancy to put a time commitment into something you may not find enjoyable. Just ignore that.
Have fun with it. See if it sticks. If it doesn't, then it didn't.
I just simply love healing. I've played both a Priest and a Paladin for the last three years and I've been glued to healing 100%. I find both classes totally enjoyable. None of the healing classes are totally incapable of keeping up through some strange measurement.

With Cataclysm, Blizzard has evened out all healing classes abilities to either raid heal or main tank heal so it is entirely up to you.

Makes perfect sense; it's what you already said in different words. :P
I agree with all the above. I've played all but a Resto Shaman, and they definitely feel quite different. It's a playstyle choice.

Holy Paladins are one of the best single target tank healer in the game. As fast as leveling is now, just get to 15 and try some PvE, PvP and LFD groups and see how it feels. To give most classes a fair shake I'd say you need to level to at least 30. Resto Shamans are good fun too if you enjoy the healing aspect of the game. Both excel in their jobs.

It doesn't seem to matter which healer you pick where if you don't like healing you won't find one or another any more or less enjoyable.

Be a bit careful with the first statement there :P We are no longer in Wrath, so as already stated, we are pretty equal all of us. The only healer that have issues healing tanks, are Disc Priests, and they will be getting a buff this patch. Unless by "We are
one of the best
" you mean we are all the best. If you do, you are pretty much spot on :P
In my opinion though, I find Paladins have a harder time in 5-mans, where you are the only healer, to heal party-wide damage compared to the rest. Holy got a bunch of AoE, Resto can chain-heal, and Druids can blanket everyone easily as well. Paladins have some lesser tools that allow them to pull through without any deaths, but it feels more stressed. All in all, it comes down to preference, as already stated.

Not to derail the thread here but to the OP about Paladin's having a harder time, you mean at 85 or below? been doing most dungeons from 80 to 85 and i've noticed that most unavoidable AoE has roughly the same interval as
(10 sec up, 20 sec down with holy talents, yes it is expensive, but pretty sweet if you ask me AND the movementspeed-buff
Speed of Light
is VERY nice to get out of bad stuff as well as healing a small bit all over.)
In regards to the thread itself i have little to add, it's mostly been said already, but my take on it is that healing is fun, when you find the style that fits you.
