I personally have one threat set w/ high hit & expertise, which puts me to 27 exp. (6.75%) and 126hit rating (7.99%), and 497 BV (+4pcT6 bonus) that pretty much allows my dps to do whatever they want without the risk of pulling aggro. If I *really* wanna go all out, I'll slap on some 20hit food to be as close to hit cap as possible.
In my standard, all-round balanced set however, I run with 16 expertise, 106 hit rating, and 495-555BV (depending on trinkets), which is usually largely sufficient and supplies me with ~600more hp and considerably more avoidance than the previous set (so much avoidance, in fact, that I only need to switch out 2 pieces to become passively uncrushable with raid buffs on me.)
There's no "ideal" hit rating per se, other than being hit capped. Obviously, anything other than being hit capped, is not ideal. However there's no setup in which you're at max hp, crushing immune, hit capped, AND sporting tons of BV/Expertise, so you need to make tradeoffs - and use different gear for different fights. Boss can't crush? Max health or avoidance set, probably. No real risk of dying, but a dps race? Threat set. Boss crushes like mad and threat isn't your main concern (due to dps limitations or whatever)? Passive crushing immune setup.

9% Hit
5.6% Expertise
which comes out to 142 hit rating and around 90 expertise rating.

You know this question gets asked more than any other. You really should sticky a post at the top of the forum with a link to those 2 websites. Theres another thread called "hit rating as prot" on the second page from less than a month ago. And dps warriors post at least once a week asking the same question.

Is your weapon skill 350?

Hit rating is a basic game fundamental. I feel I am not objective enough to understand the reasoning many players have concerning the distinction between talent builds or classes -- because there is no distinction.
This is an issue I will probably cover again in the Warrior FAQ, cleaning up & re-organizing it with its own section, in the future. Time may tell.
Continually answering every single thread with a genuine answer only serves to encourage the posting of such fundamentalist questions. I myself am guilty of this, in the past, but mostly now I find others, who have become active in the forums, are falling into the same trap.
=) In my opinion.

I do have 350 weapon skill and 350 unarmed :D
The next question is, "What is your enemies' defense skill?"
Any creature over 70 (that is, 71+) will have a higher defense skill. One aspect of Defense is that it increases avoidance. While it is true dodge & parry are increased, this particular point is about "chance to be missed." So, a level 70 will have 5% base chance
to be missed
& a level 73, with inherently higher defense, will have 9% total chance to be missed.
My question would be easier answered if someone would take the time to throw it in a FAQ.
While this question is answered already in the Warrior FAQ, a note that disambiguates the effectiveness of hit rating in relation to talent builds or classes is indeed called for & will be rectified
when I am able
.
Thanks in advance to Arideni who is probably going to do so because he's sick of nubs asking the same thing :)
While this particular topic has become a nuissance over the last two weeks, I do whole-hearted understand the issue at hand & it has, despite my earlier statement, become clear to me the reasoning behind such topics as this. Thank
you
for helping me understand the problem from a different perspective. As I said, I will introduce a plausible annotation to the FAQ through a make-shift update as soon as possible (expect it sometime in the next week as I am currently changing career paths & have no access to my usual computer).
Hit Rating for a Prot Warrior is like Expertise to a Fury Warrior . . .
Unfortunately, Expertise is of somewhat reduced in effectiveness for PVE. While it is true, it does reduce dodge & parry regardless, all melee damage dealers should be
behind
their enemy -- creatures cannot parry an attack from behind. This limits expertise in most situations to
just dodge
from what I can tell. The practical reality is that the 2:1 ratio of expertise to hit rating falls flat, in my opinion. So, what does this mean? It simply translates to Fury warriors seeking
both
anyway & levels the playing field for gear (either is fine, but hit rating wins out once you reach the expertise soft-cap). I hope to have expressed my thoughts on this matter clearly, =)
Powa
: It is apparent to me that you have stumbled upon one of the main pitfalls of our class: our talent trees are distinct. That in & of itself both brings us joy, and brings us pain, all in one. I'm quite sure Blizzard has a large, white greaseboard where they scramble & brainstorm ideas around these solutions just as we do here. Let us hope they can come up with a solution to make us all happy with version 3.0.

More will work, at least as far as I know there isn't a "soft" cap. Obviously, you can't reduce it below 0% parry or dodge, but understand this: Parry is a tool used to tune fights, independant of other factors in most cases. I understand your concern; know this: parry can be reduced even if dodge reaches 0% or similar situation. In short, yes, they work individually as you put it.
