the requirement is that you must have at least 5 blue gems (including purple/green gems) socketed into your gear at the same time as that Meta gem in order for you to get the boost of that meta gem.
Make sense?

So because my Dragonhide helm only has a meta and yellow socket i cant use a gem that requires at least 4 blue sockets
No, it's in all of your equipment, not just the one that you're equiping the meta gem into. As in as long as you have 5 blue gems in all over your gear, that meta gem will work.
IE:
Head slot has Meta/Yellow = Meta + Green Gem (Yellow+Blue)
Chest has Blue/Red/Yellow = Blue + Red + Green
Pants have Red/Red = Purple (Blue+Red)+ Red
Shoulders have Yellow/Blue = Yellow + Green
Total = 5 Blue, 3 Reds, 4 Yellows
If you had that, it would meet all requirements (5 blue gems) for your meta gem.

just to clarify (as the OP appears confused), you do NOT need to match gem color's to socket colors. That is to say if you need 5 blue gems to activate your meta gem, but only 3 blue sockets. You can socket any blue/purple/green gem into the 3 blue sockets, and then into any 2 other sockets (you will just no longer be able to recieve the socket bonus for that piece of gear).
