I recently leveled my priest to 85, and today me and my homies were cruising heroics and I was quietly loling at people saying priests suck now as I had no trouble with anything. I cleared H Deadmines in quest blues because i dosnt afraid of anything.
Until I tried H Grim Batol.
Throngus seems just impossible as a Holy Priest. The amount of damage done is just too high for my throughput. Everyone eats at least two ticks of flaming shield madness when he switches, plus the little $##!@ shooting arrows at us make it nearly impossible to not lose a party member. We always lose at least one DPS. I get some mana back in the next phase but by then our damage output is so slow he just goes into shield again and wrecks us.
I have NO idea how to get through shield phase with everyone alive. The time I have to cast crap without moving is not sufficient to heal the damage done to us. The only sensible idea I can think of is bringing a pally or shammy for the elemental resist aura. I've seriously never nerd raged at a fight so much.

Tips pretty please with sugar on top before I throw my computer out the window :(

The arrows can not be avoided, that's 50k damage per group member over 20 seconds. You will need to toss out 10 Renews to deal with it. Your gear seems okay to do this.
The rest is up to your group. Get out of the fire, click Lightwell.

there's two ways to deal with the shield. everyone get close so that when he turns you can just run through him or everyone spread out so that when he turns to someone he'll only hit one person (but it will take that person longer to get safe).
as holy i prefer the spread out method. you have body and soul to speed the one person up (LoF if they're really slow).
other than that i agree that lightwell is really good for this one.

I always go with the huddled up strategy. The fire cone does damage in a 180 degree arc, meaning a spread out strategy means half the group is always taking a !@#$ TON of damage.
no it doesn't. it is quite clearly very localized.

Yeah there's no reason for anyone to not just stand behind him all the time.

I've found the answer to be serendipity. There is obviously the necessity to get out of the shield flame, but after that you pom bounce, binding heal to keep yourself up and to 2-stack serendipity, and poh. It's probably best to just pom and poh spam unless you yourself get low (and then the binding heal as said).

I am sorry. I have heard others tell it to be 180 degrees and seem to remember experiencing people outside, even a little, taking damage from shields.
One of the issues I've had with this boss is that he will sometimes be standing beneath falling earth (aoe damage area) during shield phase, which means people take fire damage + aoe damage, which is a healing nightmare.
If people move fast and say within 10-15 yards of Throngus all the time (excluding Mace phases perhaps), they usually only take 1-2 ticks of 10-15k damage, which can be healed relatively easy (CoH + 2 x PoH). Usually he turns 2-3 times, and you're out again.
This is basicly it, the Shield + falling earth and the arrows is nasty and if u keep to close to the boss i can happen quiet alot.
.
Only the tank needs to kite the mace phase the rest can stay close as long as they dont stand in the fire trail.
As long as everyone keeps a save distance to react fast on the shield its an easy fight.
Not done it a holy but as disc no problems what so ever, once we did this.

After ending up in heroic Grim Batol for the 4th time, I was finally able to solo-heal Forgemaster Throngus for the first time a couple days ago. It's a tough fight and even harder for priests, but I finally did it!
The first time I went to H-GB was with a guild run and luckily our boomkin had a resto offspec so the first attempt we two-healed it and even then both of us ran OOM and we almost didn't make it.
The 2nd time was with a LFD PuG. After 3 or 4 wipes, the group harassed and berated me to the point where I had to just leave the group. It was their own faults that they were dying. They were standing in cave-ins, standing in fires, not moving out of the shield's fire, and my healing just couldn't keep everyone up. After failing several times, being called a noob and that a level 64 paladin could heal better, I just had to quit and then cry in the shower for a couple hours.
3rd time was with another LFD PuG but there was a shadow priest in the group who knew there were healing troubles on the fight and volunteered to go disc. We wiped once after the two of us ran OOM because of low DPS, but the 2nd attempt went smoothly. I still wasn't very encouraged after only downing the boss twice after so many attempts, and both kills were using 2 healers.
The 4th time was once again with a guild group but with only 1 healer this time: me. Our first attempt was going okay — nobody was taking too much damage from the fire shield, nobody was standing in cave-ins or fire — but we wiped because immediately after the first shield phase I got impaled with 50% health and the final tick of impale killed me. The next attempt was a complete success, however. There was much rejoicing.
For Dual Blades, I just used Smite, Penance and Greater Heal.
For Mace, our warrior tank would Heroic Leap away from Throngus and kite him around, he didn't really need many heals and DPS easily avoided fires and cave-ins. As a healer, always make sure you're at least 75% health and with a PW:S for this phase, otherwise you'll be helpless if he impales you. A good tank will not take any damage during this phase, so use your mana to top yourself off and tend to people who are getting impaled.
For the Shield phase, we would stack up right on Throngus' rear. This is when I would pop Power Infusion and Archangel and spam (glyphed) PoH a few times, and cast Greater Heal liberally on anybody who was taking major damage. If we were unlucky enough to have a cave-in right on top of Throngus for this phase, I would drop Power Word: Barrier and just muscle through it. It's important to try and save Archangel for this phase. Another decent method of damage prevention would be to toss a PW:S on someone, followed by a hastened PoH, then put PW:S on someone else, followed by another hastened PoH and repeat.
Inner Will helps a lot with escaping damage and makes PW:S less mana intensive for the shield phase. If people are smart and follow fight mechanics, they can avoid a lot of damage and make the healer's job much easier.
In terms of stat priorities, I was running with mostly Haste and Mastery, to speed up my PoH and GH casts and improve how much damage my PoH will absorb from Divine Aegis. I try and keep at least 12-15% base crit, as a bonus 5% will typically be provided by group buffs, another 10% is provided by Renewed Hope, and 25% more is provided by Inner Focus, which is macro'd to Greater Heal and PoH. After reaching a suitable amount of base crit, I've just been reforging mainly for Haste and Mastery

Maybe it's just me, but I've failed to heal this solo every time I've tried as a priest. The only time I managed to succeed at this fight was with a shaman healing also.
Every pug I've been in, between the fire on the ground, the falling rocks, and throngus' flames, I always go oom even after using all my CDs...and eventually wipe. It is SO frustrating.
