Same, even if I don't know what they're talking about! I really enjoyed the storyline and the characters in XIII, but the gameplay is fairly linear until Gran Pulse.

Nice, gratz Squish.
Edit: Honestly, nearly all of the FF games are linear till the final disc; at that point you have the choice to finish or go complete all the side quests. FF2 though.... that one could be vicious, since at first you have the option of walking back into the Emperor's castle...and dying instantly lol.

Heh, thanks.
That's one thing that my girlfriend enjoys about FF over games like WoW - the linear storylines are part of the appeal, because it makes it easier to feel like you're following the plot and the story. With WoW, it felt more like running around and 'completing all the quests in this area, move on and complete all the quests in that area, repeat'. (Yes, I know this has changed in Cata, but we're ploughing through Northrend at the moment, so it's still a bit all over the place. Maybe not once she hits the Wrathgate questline.)
She made the point that what we'd done so far was incredibly linear, but yes, I did reply with your point, Adamsm. I think part of the difference is that you do get a bit more freedom in most of the FF games, simply because they introduce the world map to you earlier. Once you hit the world map, you have an illusion of freedom, at least; even if you're railroaded into following the plot, you can still stuff around and grind and tame chocobos or something.

Honestly, the only one I can think of that was 'open' early was FFX-2 since it was mission based things, and you had a 'large' number of options to choose where to go. Most of the others though, it took a long while to reach that open point: 6 7 8 are some of the best examples; World of Ruin in 6, Weapon Assault in 7 and gaining Ragnarok in 8. But yeah, the illusion takes a while in 13 from what I've heard.

On an unrelated note, VII is no longer #1! Hell yea.
Wow, I wouldn't have expected that it was FFX that would overtake it though. Generation gap, I guess.

Except 7, 8, 9 and FFT have all made a come back recently; the first three released on the PSN and the FFT remake on the PSP.

If you buy FF7/8/9 on the PSN, can you use it on both your PS3 and your PSP, or do you need to buy it again, do you know? It doesn't seem terribly clear.

Should be able to use on both; did you download it directly to your PS3 or put it on your computer first? I'm honestly not sure, since I just have the PSP and just use Media Go to install the DLC stuff onto the memory card. Try opening your PSN profile on your computer and see what comes up; if it's there on your account, shouldn't be any problems to move them to a PSP when you eventually pick one up.

Down to the PS3, but I assume that it's linked to my PSN account, i.e. I can re-download it if necessary.

I like your optimism!

Oh, you know you will; the sirens call of Crisis Core, Dissidia 1 and 2, and the other titles will capture you. Also, on the PSN, if you enjoyed Xenogears, Parasite Eve, Vagrant's Story, and soon, Legend of Mana, you can pick them up heh.
So Dissidia has random letters from Moogles(yes, sorta like the Crystal Chronicle series), and the most recent round of them have been about the opera/play events that have occurred in the series...and made me realize, I would really love to see a new one on the next gen consoles: I mean, think about the FF6 Opera or even 'I want to be your Canary' done in fully rendered CGI /drool
Plus, they always had great fights at the end;
Ultros
for 6 and the Big Bomb at the end of 9's.

Did you just bump your thread? :P
Aeris is currently making me remember why we all cried like babies when she dies.

Oh pft, it translates in game as Aeris, and it's easier on the mouth.

I usually delete the last post in threads like this when I wish to add in something new. And it's officially Aerith again; from Kingdom Hearts, to Advent Children, to Dissidia, that's her name(which it was originally lol).

I was so happy when she died. Easily one of my least favorite Final Fantasy characters ever.

Blasphemy!
It teared me up when she died the first time. I had also not used her very much before this. My second playthrough and on, I'd always use her as much as possible and get her final limit break, which is super OP.
She was so annoying as a character and, gameplay wise, she was pretty much useless since you lose her anyway.
