Raegar meditated about the answers the Elthalis and Grintham had defined. Elthalis one was a pretty good one, and Grintham only saw one pragmatical, and violent, use of magic. The orc then said: "Magic is the capacity to bind the laws of the universe to our will, Curator Malaghast."

Callyx held the rod carefully and slowly began to fill the runes. It didn't present to terrible a challenge. At least not yet. Callyx wasn't a complete foreigner to Arcane magic, at any rate.

Elysia Flameheart
Battle Mage's Quarter
Elysia looked at the others, processing their views, then said aloud "Magic the manipulation of arcane or divine energies to do as the caster has the ability to both control and channel."

The runes on the rod, one after another, began to light up. Eldoroth found no challange in the task, as he a proud sin'dorei was far from new in the arts of arcane. It took a bit more than one minute before all eight runes shimmered with arcane.
Then the elf opened his eyes, and like a cool kid, he said no word.

The Curator sighed.
"Okay. Instead of focusing on the negative - that Elthalis gives a definition more suitable to a senile scholar who's never flung a bolt of destructive energy in his reclusive life, and Grintham's answer is one of the main reasons common people treat us with irrational, undergarments-soiling terror instead of respectful awe - I'm just gonna praise Raegar for both thinking before speaking and coming up with something resembling a sensible answer. Again. Good job, big guy.
Magic is
change
. The incarnation of raw will and honed mind, it is an ability to gaze beyond the mundanity of one's bleak life and impose their desire upon the very fabric of matter. Whichever strain of magic is practiced, in the end it can be summarized as refusing to let the laws of universe take their course and introducing your vision into the system, be it order, decay, or a simple rearrangement of pieces on the board - take your pick.
You are attuned to the arcane magic - an energy field that is present everywhere in this world; much like a stone thrown will fall back, attracted by the gravity, and a certain amount of heat will turn ice into water into steam, the arcane too obeys its laws, with the added benefit of being capable of overriding other laws of physics, if only for a short period of time.
This field is expressed in the form of ley lines flowing across Azeroth. They are eternal, and yet they are in the constant state of ever-changing flux - such is their nature. Some go as far as to claim the ley lines are brimming with life, in the same sense that trees and mushrooms are alive. An ability to tap into their power is what separates true magic from parlor tricks of a stage performer.
As such, the power of any given spell is determined by the following: the degree of your natural connection to the ley lines, the intensity of the flow in the nearest one and your proximity to it, your own knowledge and practice and, last but not the least, the capacity of your body to hold this energy. The simplest of spells inevitably includes letting the energy run through your body and mind before being unleashed; draw too much, and you are at risk of burning yourself out."

"You will understand eventually," Eisenfaust said softly, "Much as I wished you did not have to.
This concludes our lecture. Unless you have more questions, we will now proceed to the training grounds, where you will begin practicing with arms."

Elthalis placed a finger on her chin thinking over the words of the Sin'dorei. "What about mana gems and the sunwell Curator Malaghast? Where do they come in with the connection of ley lines and fueling spells from them as the former has no conection to ley lines and the later, i admit, is placed in a nexus of ley lines." She asked curiously.

Arthur panted, laying down the rod back on the table. Sweat beaded his brow and is chest heaved with exertion. But he had done it. Three of the eight runes were now lit. He lay back in his chair, basking in the fleeting feeling of accomplishment.
"Whew,' Vera observed as she laid the rod back down. Six of the eight runes were lit, and she was only just out of breath. "That was fun. How'd you do?" she asked, turning to Eryan.

Joaquin opened his eyes, his breath just shy of burdened. Of the eight runes, three were now shining. The bard was about to put more effort into the task when he saw Arthur putting the rod down. Deciding to preserve his energy for the time being, Joaquin followed Arthur's example.
Eryan's teeth were clenched shut and his veins were bulging from the sheer effort. The rod, however, seemed to be unaffected at the slightest, lying cold and dormant in the boy's hands.
Then, the ginger youth exhaled sharply and relaxed visibly. Air around him thickened and crackled with power as energy surged from his fingertips and into the rod in a powerful torrent. All eight runes lit up brightly.
"Whoa!" Eryan exclaimed, seeming taken aback by his own actions. In confusion he let the rod slip from his fingers; the second it hit the table, a flash of light and a sound of thunder concealed it from sight. When Eryan managed to blink away the spots of color in his eyes, only five runes remained shining.

"The Sunwell is more than just a tight nexus of ley lines; first it was augmented by a vial of water taken from the Well of Eternity, then, further, by the essence of a divine being. Its nature - as in, how can it be accessible from any point in the peninsula but no further? Why is it that only the elven children of this land can tap into its glory? - is beyond your understanding for now, and of little importance, what with you being away from home.
The mana gems, well... Think of them as slowing down the flow of time. The arcane energy yearns to be in motion, stagnation is anathema to its nature. However, for a brief period of time, a small portion of it can be calmed down and contained in a limited space.
This artificial prison is a mana gem - and it is unstable. It can only hold the energy inside for so long before it begins to deteriorate and leak it, possibly with hazardous results."

"Apparently, the rod couldn't hold all the energy I tried to push into it; seems like the simplest explanation of its sudden high-frequency vibration there for a moment," Eryan smiled sheepishly, holding up the glowing wand defensively between himself and Miss Skivvers.
"Sorry about that, Vera," he added in a quiet aside.

"You'd think so, wouldn't you," Varathrien muttered with a hint of annoyance. "Since you're so high and mighty and apparently don't think this lecture worth your time, why don't you do token five pushups and remain standing for the rest of the said lecture?
And students, for future reference, when I say 'why don't you...' I, of course, mean it as a command rather than a suggestion.
Moving on... The consequences of holding onto an old mana gem all have needless destruction in common, starting from singeing your pockets and ending with an explosion that can take out a good chunk of your flesh. This depends on skill of the one to seal energy into the gem, on the amount of energy manipulated and on the spells cast in the gem's owner's nearest vicinity."

"Take note students," Miss Skivvers gratingly addressed the room. "This is the reason we now start with rods, rather than fireballs."

"Yes Curator Malaghast. I was taught how to manage a fireball, from controlling it to launching it, plus using one to heat up my weapon, which makes it easier for it to cut through metal. In addition, I learned the theorical part of blinking, and frostbolts. Plus, I was taught extensive etiquette."

A silent "yes!" escaped Kim's lips and she practically jumped to her feet at the notion of weapons training.
Reacting perhaps a bit too quickly, she was left in an awkward position as the only person standing besides the curator. She looked at him with a crooked smile, a faint blush beginning to rise on her face.
"Sorry," she whispered, quickly adding "sir" and sitting down again.
