Build instant aggro (prot)

Warriors and druids are able to pick up a target, taunt, and build aggro wail the mob is still focused (via taunt) on him.

What is the best way for a pally to pick up instant aggro? And hold it when HEAVY dps attacks the mob as you pull it.

for instance. Mags adds, Birds on Alar. and Heroic bosses such as Vorpil.

Avenging Wrath + Avenger's Shield should generate a lot of threat coupled with a JoR attack, you could also taunt them with Righteous Defense (a macro thing should make it work like a regular taunt)

That's the answer to the OP's question, however, it has a different mechanic than taunt, hence, rather than the mob, the character you are taunting off of, must be in range
