Or install them all now? the reason for this question is the store i bought them from said not to add them yet as it wipes all other games and ruins progress.
The guy who told you that is either full of ^&*!, or have no idea what he/she is talking about.
Just install Cataclysm. In fact, even if it is a new, clean install, you only need to install Cataclysm as well. The only real difference, is the patch you get. IE: Installing vanilla installs patch 1.0, installing BC installs patch 2.0, installing Wrath installs patch 3.0 ... So in theory, installing Vanilla, and downloading the patch works as well.
The only reason you need the games are the CD-keys that come along with them :P
EDIT: Think of the CDs as the download file you would otherwise have to download from an Internetpage when playing an online game. It comes along to help you, so you don't need to download 30 gigs of data before installing. What you
pay
for, is actually only the CD key, that allows you to upgrade your account, so you can unlock the new features that each expansion brings.
So if your client is currently patch 4.0.5, you are up to date, and don't need to install anything at all. My Cataclysm CD haven't been used at all, and I'm playing it without any issues.

I actually highly doubt that any newly manufactured Vanilla or BC dvds are packing patches 1.0 and 2.0. :P Would be pretty amazed if they did, heh.

They must be thinking of everquest. Install them so you dont have to later and you get perks that will help you level as well.
