Engineering has long been the dominant go-to profession for dedicated PvP enthusiasts. It's easy to understand, with all the great wearables, trinkets, bombs, and other items available. But not all PvP items are created equal, so it's important to understand the differences: the effects, shared cooldowns, cast times, and ranges all play important roles in deciding the best direction for your PvP engineering choices.
Non-engineers can benefit from only a few PvP-useful items, and these are listed in their own section. The vast majority of engineered items require a minimum Engineering skill not only to make but to use as well.
Engineering PvP Wearables
All items are Bind on Equip unless otherwise specified.
Engineering PvP Boots
Botas cohete goblin
Use:
Cloth; 41 armor. These dangerous looking boots significantly increase your run speed for 20 sec. They are prone to explode however, so use with caution. (5 Min Cooldown)
Foot speed increase:
70%
Requires:
No requirements
Created with:
Goblin Engineering 225
Botas cohete gnómicas
Use:
Cloth; 41 armor. These boots significantly increase your run speed for 20 sec. WARNING: Their power supply and gyros do not always function as intended. (30 Min Cooldown)
Foot speed increase:
50% (does not stack with speed buffs, enchants, or abilities)
Requires:
Engineering 225
Created with:
Gnomish Engineering 225
Both share a cooldown with
Cronómetro ingenioso
. Using the Nifty Stopwatch will reset the cooldown on both sets of boots (
Botas cohete goblin
will reset the cooldown for 5 minutes, not 30).
On the face, the
Botas cohete goblin
might appear to be much better. They're faster, stack with some speed buffs, and have a significantly shorter cooldown. They also can be used by anyone, regardless of level, and one of only a small handful of items usable by non-Engineers. Both boots state that they can malfunction on use.
But
Botas cohete goblin
have a high malfunction rate -- about 30% of the time. And when they malfunction, they explode, destroying the boots. When it does, you will get the item
Botas cohete abrasadas
in your backpack, which can contain some of the components, specifically
Botas de paño mágico negro
, 1-4
Cuero pesado
, or
Tubo de mitril
, and sometimes
Cableado fusionado
.
Some claim if you click
Botas cohete goblin
off before 15 seconds that they won't blow up, but so many others have reported near-instantaneous incineration that this is an urban legend.
Botas cohete gnómicas
can also malfunction, in two ways. The first isn't really considered a "malfunction" but rather a poorly worded tooltip: the speed increase is for UP TO 20 seconds, not 20 seconds guaranteed. You could get a speed boost for one second and your cooldown's blown. Most people report around 10 seconds of speed.
The actual malfunction is a backfire, rather than destroying the boots. Instead of running forward as intended, you run around in random directions for 5 seconds.
Summary
:
Botas cohete goblin
give 70% extra run speed with a shorter cooldown and have no required level/engineering, but you risk losing the boots and some of the components on use.
Botas cohete gnómicas
give 50% extra run speed with a much longer cooldown. They don't always last 20 seconds, but at least they don't explode.
Despite the risk,
Botas cohete goblin
are considered the top boot item for PvP, particularly for flag runners. Engineers who can't afford to keep replacing their boots should use
Botas cohete gnómicas
instead.
Engineering PvP Head Items
Gorro de control mental gnómico
Use:
Cloth, 51 Armor, +14 Spirit. Engage in mental combat with a humanoid target to try and control their mind. If all works well, you will control the mind of the target for 20 sec ..... (30 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Engineering 215
Created with:
Gnomish Engineering 235
This insanely fun item has one major drawback: you can only use this on targets that are not in combat. This change was implemented in Patch 1.11, so this restriction is in effect in Classic.
In PvP, this means you can turn another player into your pet for 20 seconds. You will have a six-button behavior bar you can use, along with whatever the AI decides to do on its own. One major positive effect of this is that it often blows that character's long cooldowns.
Like many nifty engineered items, it can fail. When it does, you can become your target's pet instead, or you can become immobilized but immune to attacks for 20 seconds.
Ultragafas Ojo de gato
Equip:
Cloth, 47 Armor. Increases your stealth detection.
Requires:
Engineering 220
Created with:
Engineering 220
This is the best of two stealth detection items in-game. The amount of stealth detection gives you the ability to detect stealthed characters as if you were 3.6 levels higher than you are.
Lentes Vid de sangre
, which is leather, more expensive to make, and requires Engineering 300, only "slightly" increases stealth detection, at about 1.8 levels above.
Engineering PvP Belt
Cinturón de prevención de daño gnómico
Use:
Leather, 66 Armor, +6 Stamina. A shield of force protects you from the next 500 damage done over the next 10 min. WARNING: Force Field may overload when struck temporarily removing the wearer from this dimension. (1 Hour Cooldown)
Requires:
Engineering 215
Created with:
Gnomish Engineering 215
This great damage mitigation device is, unfortunately, unavailable to cloth classes as it is a leather item. While the force shield is in effect, spells can't be interrupted. Some PvPers like using this with the Gnomish Death Ray.
When it backfires, you're banished for 20 seconds.
Engineering PvP Trinkets
Proyector redomático gnómico
Use:
Captures the target in a net for 10 sec. The net has a lot of hooks however and sometimes gets caught in the user's clothing when fired...... (10 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Engineering 210
Created with:
Gnomish Engineering 210
One of the most popular PvP items in-game, the
Proyector redomático gnómico
is a favorite both for offensive and defensive purposes. It's great for stopping runners and stopping killers. Druids, paladins, and gnomes can escape it if their appropriate abilities are up, but it's great for rooting nearly any other class.
It can backfire. When it does, it either brings your target directly to you or shoots you to your target, and then nets you both together for 10 seconds.
Popular to use together with the
Rayo mortal gnómico
, since damage doesn't break the net.
Rayo mortal gnómico
Bind on Pickup
Use:
The devices charges over time using your life force and then directs a burst of energy at your opponent. (5 Min Cooldown)
"Death or Serious Injury may result from use of this device."
Created with:
Gnomish Engineering 240
The
Rayo mortal gnómico
is one reason so many PvP-focused Engineers choose Gnomish Engineering; this item is Bind on Pickup, so by default only Gnomish Engineers capable of making it can wield it. (Theoretically, since it has no "requirement" listed, presumably one could make this item and then drop Engineering).
While this can have some good crits and deals out a lot of damage, it's at the expense of your own hit points. With a range of 30 yards and damage around 700-800 without crits (and crits ranging into the low thousands), it's both a PvE- and PvP-killing machine. It also doesn't appear to be subject to normal resists.
Since this drains your life charging the weapon, be sure you are at or near full health before starting. Commenters on this item recommend making sure you have at least 1500 HP before lighting this baby up.
Important:
Rayo mortal gnómico
shares a cooldown with Bombs and Grenades, as well as many active click trinkets such as
Esencia encadenada de Eranikus
.
Refractor de hielo Girohielo
Equip:
+18 Frost Resistance.
Use:
Reflects Frost spells back at their caster for 5 sec. (5 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Level 47, Engineering 240
Created with:
Engineering 240
Refractor de llamas hiperradiante
Equip:
+18 Fire Resistance.
Use:
Reflects Fire spells back at their caster for 5 sec. (5 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Level 53, Engineering 290
Created with:
Engineering 290
Reflector de sombras ultra-flash
Equip:
+18 Shadow Resistance.
Use:
Reflects Shadow spells back at their caster for 5 sec. (5 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Level 55, Engineering 300
Created with:
Engineering 300
All three of these items work the same way. They offer an appropriate elemental resist at all times, and when activated, reflects that spell school's damage back at the caster.
One nice thing about these trinkets is that none of them share a cooldown. If, for example, you're faced with a Warlock opponent and you're not sure if you're going to be hit with Fire or Shadow, you can activate both
Refractor de llamas hiperradiante
and
Reflector de sombras ultra-flash
simultaneously.
Engineering PvP Unequipped Items
Rayo descombobulador
Use:
Transforms the target into a Leper Gnome, reducing its melee and spell damage by 40 and its movement rate by 20% for 12 sec. (1 Min Cooldown)
Charges:
5
Created with:
Engineering 160
The
Rayo descombobulador
has several advantages. It is one of the few items that does not require Engineering skill and doesn't have a level requirement. It doesn't take up an equipment slot.
One of the things PvPers love (or hate) about the
Rayo descombobulador
is that it's useful in dismounting enemy players. It also has obvious annoyance utilities of slowing runners and slowing cast times of enemy players. It is single target, so use wisely.
Rayo descombobulador
shares a cooldown with Bombs, Grenades, and other movement-inhibiting items such as
Pegamento muy pegajoso
. It does have charges so you may wish to have more than one since it has such a short cooldown.
Engineering PvP Explosives
Differences Between Explosive Types
There are three types of explosives: Bombs, Grenade, and Dynamite. It's important to understand the key differences between these three types to know when to use which. All three do varying amounts of damage (with two exceptions in the Specialty Bombs category).
Bombs
stun targets in a certain radius, ranging from 3-8 yards depending on the bomb (the only exception to this is the
Carga de zapador goblin
, which doesn't have a stun effect but can pack a massive AOE crit). Cast times range from 1-4 seconds. Players must not move while the bomb is being cast.
Grenades
also stun targets in a 3-yard radius, on the smallest radius end of the explosives. The major advantage of grenades is that although these have 4-second cast times, you can move while casting, so these can be chucked on the run.
Dynamite
does damage only, with no stun effect. However, there are two types of dynamite,
Dinamita EZ-Thro
and
Dinamita EZ-Thro 2
, which are the only engineer-made explosives usable by non-engineers. Non-engineers would be better-served carrying
Bomba cegadora
instead, which shares a cooldown but has utility in getting hunter pets and shape-shifted druids and shaman off your back.
All bombs, grenades, and dynamite share a 1-minute cooldown (
Carga de zapador goblin
has a 5-minute cooldown, but only burns 1 minute on other explosives' cooldowns). Engineers should never use Dynamite in PvP situations, reserving the cooldown for movement-restricting Bombs and Grenades.
Best Engineering PvP Bombs
Bomba de fragmentación de mitril
Use:
Inflicts 149 to 201 Fire damage and stuns targets in a 8-yard radius for 2 seconds. Any damage will break the effect.
Requires:
Engineering 205
Created with:
Engineering 215
The Mithril Frag Bomb is one of the best-in-class bombs, due to a large effect radius, relatively cheap materials, and short cast time. It also has a better-than-average throw range of up to 15 yards. While the stun time is short, it's plenty to stop momentum of a runner and interrupt multiple spell casters.
Carga de zapador goblin
Use:
Explodes when triggered dealing 450 to 750 Fire damage to all enemies nearby and 375 to 625 damage to you. (5 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Engineering 205
Created with:
Goblin Engineering 205
This represents the essence of Goblin engineering's strength: really big booms. It doesn't have the stun effects of other bombs, but it sure packs a huge punch. This beauty can also crit, adding to the damage. It does damage the caster as well, but that's just part of the fun of being a true Goblin Sapper.
El grande
Use:
Inflicts 340 to 460 damage and stuns targets for 5 sec in a 10 yard radius. Any damage will break the effect.
Requires:
Engineering 225
Created with:
Goblin Engineering 235
For Goblin Engineers, this is a great bomb, with the largest blast radius in the game (10 yards) and longest stun time. One possible sticking point is the need for
Combustible de cohete goblin
, which requires a 210 Alchemist to make. Still, if you can find someone willing to make your fuel for you, it can be worth it. It's the large number of component ingredients and the requirement of another crafter that downgrades this slightly from the
Bomba de fragmentación de mitril
.
Runners-Up
Bomba de cobre grande
,
Bomba de bronce grande
and
Bomba de hierro grande
are decent beginner bombs, and good when you're skilling up. All three have 5-yard radiuses.
Bomba de cobre grande
has a short throw and a 4-second cast, and the other two have 15-yard throws with a 1-second cast. These can be made and used at 105, 140, and 190 Engineering respectively,
The
Mortero de bronce portátil
has a very short throw radius, but it's instant cast, so it's good to be able to react quickly to a sudden bomb need.
Other bombs
Bomba Hierro Negro
(Engineering 285) is the bomb with the highest damage potential (225-675, 215 points higher than
El grande
), but it has a short throw radius, a 4-second cast time, and relatively expensive materials. This may be better in a PvE situation where controlling movement is not so important.
Bomba de gran carga
(Engineering 235) has a higher cost than the
Bomba de fragmentación de mitril
, using 2
Envoltura de mitril
and 2
Pólvora
instead of 1 each for the
Bomba de fragmentación de mitril
(both use 1
Disparador inestable
. It does more damage, but has a much shorter throw range, a 3-yard radius and a 4-second cast. Use those materials to make another combine of
Bomba de fragmentación de mitril
instead.
The "baby bomb",
Bomba de cobre basto
(Engineering 30) has a small radius of only 3 yards and a 3-second cast, but it's a quick and dirty cheap bomb that you can use very early on in your engineering career. Don't bother with the
Bomba de bronce pequeña
(Engineering 120), which shares the small 3-yard radius; use the 5-yard radius
Bomba de cobre grande
instead, which can be made from level 105. You also get more potential yield with the
Bomba de cobre grande
(2-4) as opposed to 1-3 for the
Bomba de bronce pequeña
, for similar mat requirements.
Summary: Big bombs good. Small bombs bad.
Engineering PvP Grenades
Granada de hierro
Use:
Inflicts 132 to 218 Fire damage and stuns targets for 3 sec in a 3 yard radius. Any damage will break the effect. (1 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Engineering 175
Created with:
Engineering 175
Granada de torio
Use:
Inflicts 300 to 500 Fire damage and stuns targets for 3 sec in a 3 yard radius. Any damage will break the effect. (1 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Engineering 260
Created with:
Engineering 260
Upgrading from
Granada de hierro
to
Granada de torio
is mostly increasing damage; the desired stun effect and cast times are the same. For the most part, you aren't going to be relying on damage from grenades -- it's the stun-on-the-run effect you're mostly after -- so
Granada de hierro
is probably going to be your go-to grenade.
Granada de hierro
yields 2-4 grenades with far cheaper items;
Granada de torio
creates 2 for more extensive and far more expensive materials.
There was a nerf to the
Granada de hierro
that made characters level 50 and over resist its effects, but this wasn't implemented until Burning Crusade. You're certainly welcome to use the punchier
Granada de torio
, but as far as bang for the buck goes, you should rely on the cheaper
Granada de hierro
for that surprise stun.
Engineering PvP Specialty Bombs
Bomba cegadora
Use:
Causes all Beasts in a 5 yard radius to run away for 10 sec. (1 Min Cooldown)
Requires:
Level 27
Created with:
Engineering 185
A specialty-use bomb, the Flash Bomb is useful not only in getting hunter pets away from you (unless they're affected by Bestial Wrath), but it also works on bear/cat druids and shamans in ghost wolf form as well. Neither shapeshifting nor damage break this effect, so you can use this to get in some revenge. It is the only bomb non-engineers can use.
Bomba Arcana
is mentioned here only because, in theory, it could be used in PvP. The combination of draining mana, damage, and mass Silence would be amazing if it wasn't for the steep cost of these bombs. Each one uses a
Conversor de arcanita delicado
, and the
Bomba Arcana
is in economic demand as a component for several desirable items and quests. You won't see many people chucking these around battlegrounds.
Goblin or Gnomish Engineering?
One of the big questions may PvP-focused engineers have is whether they should choose Goblin or Gnomish engineering. On the face of things, Goblin engineering seems the natural choice, as many of its items focus on making big explosions and doing high amounts of damage. However, it's really not such a simple question.
Goblin engineering
is
destruction focused, but very few items made with Goblin engineering made the tops of their lists. However, Gnomish engineering produces five of the very best items for PvP, one of which (
Rayo mortal gnómico
) is Bind on Pickup.
Goblin Engineering items useful for PvP:
Botas cohete goblin
,
El grande
Gnomish Engineering items useful for PvP:
Botas cohete gnómicas
,
Proyector redomático gnómico
,
Rayo mortal gnómico
,
Gorro de control mental gnómico
,
Cinturón de prevención de daño gnómico
Realistically speaking, however, the only item that is at stake here is the
Rayo mortal gnómico
, since all other items are Bind on Equip and may be purchased or traded with an engineer of the other type.
Engineering PvP Items for the Non-Engineer
As noted elsewhere, there are a handful of items non-engineers can buy from Engineers and use. These are:
Botas cohete goblin
Rayo descombobulador
Bomba cegadora
Rayo mortal gnómico
*
*Requires being a Gnomish Engineer of 240 to create; Bind on Pickup. Dropping Engineering doesn't affect the ability to use the item.
