The Quest: Interview with "50 DKP MINUS" Onyxia Raid Leader, Dives

If you have been a player or fan of World of Warcraft for any length of time you have most likely seen the now-infamous "Onyxia Wipe Animation" video. You probably even read the opening line above in the voice of Dives, the raid leader shouting orders, expletives and demands to know ‘what the f**k just happened’ in the video. As one of the original WoW memes alongside Leeroy Jenkins, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, and Rogues being OP, shouts of "50DKP MINUS" can still be heard in voice chat today across the World of Warcraft.
Gareth "Athalus" Cales was fortunate enough to have been able to track down Dives and interview him in person to ask him exactly how things went down in Wipe Club's fateful raid.
Dives explains how that evening started off as a simple endgame farming run that went terribly awry, then swept the globe in gleeful schadenfreude. “This was not supposed to end up like this. This was supposed to go like 15 minutes Onyxia, BWL, maximum 2 hours Molten Core.” As the guild found themselves into hour 3 of everything going wrong, Dives was beyond frustrated and fueled by rage, vodka, and a sheer determination to rid Azeroth of the broodmother. Guild members began swapping from alts to their mains as they continued to find no reprieve from the onslaught of so many whelps, left and right side.
Dives recalls a guild member asking him to record the raid because he found the leader’s fury to be hilarious. (Cue The Animation!) Dives recalls as hundreds of whelps overwhelmed the guild, he screamed for his mates to heal him as he leapt into the fray to hold back the incoming threat. Unfortunately Wipe Club was unable to complete Onyxia that night after several hours of raiding.
“Next day, first try.” Dives notes.
Wipe Club was a hardcore raiding group. Dives and his guildmates grew up playing the original Warcraft and Warcraft II. At the original WoW launch in Finland, Dives and some friends leveled a single rogue by sleeping shifts and trading playing in turns. At the time the video was recorded Wipe Club was just spending a few hours doing a casual farming run with their alts while waiting on the gates of Ahn'Qiraj to open.
The animator of the original video is unknown even to Dives. As the video was linked and shared in the earlier days of social media, it started to go viral. “I was having a bit of fun, ends up in some f*ing media circus.” Dives says of the original video, “This all started very like pure, very like fun.” As the video became more and more widespread, the player base began quoting lines and even creating characters on Wipe Club’s server to get a chance at teaming up or possibly trying to gank the guild behind WoW’s newest celebrity. Server queues spiked to 3 hours to get on with Wipe Club. He would get recognized in game like a celebrity walking down the street, and players would repeatedly message and try to get him to scream at them.
Athalus laughs in the interview, “Did you ever go yell at anyone, because they asked you to?”
“No!” Dives exclaims. He states, “That shit has to come from the heart. If it doesn’t come from the heart, it doesn’t matter.”
Media outlets began running stories about Dives and the animation. That’s when the video stopped being an inside joke and turned into something else. An outsider to the World of Warcraft or even gaming in general might not realize this was a tongue-in-cheek gaming night. Not all the attention was positive for Dives either. The video was used as an example of players taking the game too seriously. The people of the internet sent him personal attacks as well. This caused him to eventually cut ties from the media and “go into hiding”.
“I’m still a pro. It’s like you’re born with it or you’re not.”
Dives retired from raiding after Burning Crusade launched. He finds the gaming industry as a whole as gone in a direction he’s not happy with. “I’ve played a lot of MMO RPGS. Actually, I’ve beta’d a lot of MMOs. I’ve played a shit ton of them. They’ve all had some interesting stuff. None of them have been so well done as WoW.” Dives mentions he picks up World of Warcraft now and then but hasn’t found the same passion he had back in Vanilla. However, he doubles down on the fact that, “It is still the most successful MMO ever, and it’s probably going to be the most successful MMO ever for a pretty long time.”
