Overwatch 2 is now live and available to play, for free!
Since Overwatch is going free-to-play, you need to have SMS protection activated to your account to play Overwatch 2. Players who played Overwatch on multiple platforms can merge those multiple account into one single profile to carry progression and in-game cosmetics into Overwatch 2.
If you own Overwatch 1, make sure to log in before the end of Season 1 of Overwatch 2 to claim the founder's pack for free, and log in before the end of Season 2 to claim the new Hero Kiriko for free!
Below are some of the big highlights and changes for Overwatch 2.
Heroes & Gameplay
Overwatch 2 launches with 3 new heroes: Sojourn the DPS, Junkerqueen the tank, and Kiriko the Support.
5v5 gameplay instead of 6v6, only one tank instead of two.
All tanks buffed, since there will only be one per team. Every tank from Overwatch 1 gained HP, and many had mechanical changes or rework as well.
Many other hero changes, in general there is significantly less crowd control and fewer barriers.
Doomfist is now a tank and has been reworked.
Overhealth replaces many armor and shield granting abilities, like Brigitte's and Lucio's ultimates. Overhealth grants 50% less ultimate charge than regular health.
All heroes of each role come with new passive abilities!
DPS heroes maintain 30% of their ultimate charge when swapping characters, and will also gain a boost to their movement and reload speed when scoring an elimination.
Supports will begin to slowly regenerate their health after not taking damage for a few seconds.
Tanks have increased knockback resistance, and grant less ultimate charge for enemies when damaged.
Maps & Game Modes
Overwatch 2 has removed the 2 capture-point game-mode, and it's maps along with it. This means no more Temple of Anubis, Hanamura and Volskaya Industries. These maps and game-mode are still available in the Arcade game-mode though.
Blizzard has also added a new game mode, Push. In the new Push game-mode players fight for control of a robot that pushes towards the enemy team's spawn if you control it. You win by either pushing the robot all the way into the enemies spawn, or whoever has pushed the robot further when the time runs out.
Overwatch 2 has added a few new maps for launch. The push game-mode comes with three new maps: Colosseo, New Queen Street, and Esperança. A new payload escort map has been added, called Circuit Royal. There is also a new Hybrid game-mode map, Paraíso.
Cosmetics & Monetization
Since Overwatch 2 is going free-to-play, they have restructured their monetization model. Loot boxes are completely gone from the game and have been replaced by an in-game cosmetic store and battle pass. Instead of leveling up and earning loot boxes, you level up your battle pass. The battle pass has free unlocks for players whether they choose to purchase it or not, and new heroes will be unlockable in the battle pass at level 55. The battle pass costs 1000 Overwatch Coins (about $10 USD.) which can be bought or unlocked by doing in-game challenges. The season one battle pass includes the first ever Mythic quality skin which is customizable.
Players who don't unlock new heroes in their new season's battle pass can unlock them by doing special in-game challenges or purchasing them from the store with Overwatch Coins.
Blizzard has said there will be a new hero in Season 2, and every other season following, with a new map releasing the alternate seasons.
