Welcome to our overview of the biggest dungeon changes in Classic WoW as compared to Battle for Azeroth! While dungeons have around since vanilla, much has changed over 15 years. If you've been playing BFA without any Vanilla experience but want to get into Classic, or are a Vanilla vet that wants a refresher course, these are the largest changes to the dungeons you should know about.
Achievements and Special Rewards
At the start of an expansion, players enjoy running dungeons to collect all the achievements for meta-achievements, mount rewards, and titles. These achievements encouraged players to run dungeons in different ways.
The achievements system was not present in vanilla WoW, but players could complete the Baron "speed run" as part of the .5 dungeon set questline. And while there aren't as many mounts and pets from dungeons in Classic, players could still acquire
Riendas de Hemocargador
.
Attunements and Keys
Modern dungeons usually unlock when you hit a certain level. There have been a few recent exceptions requiring extra quests like Siege of Boralus in early Battle for Azeroth and Karazhan in Legion, but those requirements were loosened later in the expansion.
In vanilla WoW, you had to complete elaborate questlines for
Llave esqueleto
(Scholomance) and
Lacre de Ascensión
(UBRS). There were also
other keys
allowing you to skip certain parts of the instance.
At Classic launch, keys will take up bag space, but Phase 2 will add the
key ring
.
Different Layouts
All dungeons from vanilla WoW are still present in Battle for Azeroth, but many have been streamlined for easier navigation with linear paths. If you've thought that Blackrock Depths seemed particularly confusing--well, that's what all dungeons are like in Classic.
As a result of these layout changes, dungeons frequently took longer to complete, as players meandered through many wings, without save points or the option to queue for just one wing of the dungeon.
Here are some dungeons that have received significant revamps:
Deadmines - Cataclysm
Shadowfang Keep - Cataclysm
Dire Maul - Cataclysm
Zul Gurub - Cataclysm
Scholomance - MoP
Scarlet Monastery - MoP
UBRS - WoD
Dungeon Difficulties
Dungeons in Battle for Azeroth have many difficulties: Normal, Heroic, Mythic, and the elaborate Mythic+ system, where players speed-run dungeons to earn lucrative rewards, scaling in power the faster they complete the dungeon. While players may roll through a normal dungeon while leveling in Battle for Azeroth, without much danger of dying, the "normal" dungeons in vanilla WoW were quite dangerous and took hours to first clear.
In addition to multiple difficulties, dungeons in BFA dynamically scale with the player's individual level. While the scaling tech is complicated to summarize, basically a 112 and a 116 can clear the same dungeon at roughly the same difficulty and get level-specific rewards.
In vanilla WoW, there was only one difficulty per dungeon and the mobs and their rewards did not scale. This led to both under leveled/geared players going in early to try to get powerful rewards, and higher level players helping steamroll weaker dungeons for their friends. If you had a full group of under leveled players, the dungeons were very challenging and time-consuming to clear.
Due to addons and community knowledge, the dungeons in Classic may not be as time-consuming as in vanilla, but they should still provide more of a challenge than Battle for Azeroth.
Dungeon Finder
In Battle for Azeroth, many players use group finder tools to automatically sync up with players interested in the same content. However, in Classic WoW, grouping up requires you to talk to other players, inspecting them in person to see their gear. General chat was frequently used to coordinate finding other players, and it was common to add people to your friends list if you enjoyed playing with them.
Dungeon Journal
There was no Dungeon Journal in vanilla WoW. This means you could not easily look up loot or boss abilities. However, due to the presence of evolving addons and accrued guide knowledge over the years, this information is no longer a mystery in Classic. Still, you'll have to take a few extra steps to find it, instead of just opening up the journal.
Dungeon Quests
In Battle for Azeroth, dungeon quests are sometimes the culmination of zone questlines and might offer a powerful reward tailored to your current specialization, but with many sources of gear in the world, they're not always a high priority. In Classic, the dungeons and their quests are much more varied; many quests are obtained in completely different zones, and their rewards are static, not dynamic. They may or may not be necessarily good for your chosen playstyle, though they tend to be very strong for their level, such as
Frasco de diamante
.
The questgivers were also spread out around the world, instead of sitting right outside the instance, and if you enter the instance as a low-level character, you may not be high enough to complete the dungeon quests.
We have a guide to
all dungeon quests
you'll encounter while leveling, as well as a guide to

Loot Distribution
In Battle for Azeroth, dungeon loot defaults to the Personal Loot system, which means each person has a separate chance of getting a gear drop from bosses.
In Classic WoW, players can choose between several looting systems, although most players defaulted to a Need-before-Greed system.
Free-for-all - hardly used in dungeons, as it's first-come, first-serve.
Master loot - commonly used in raids, less so in dungeons, where the leader distributes all loot.
Round-robin - everyone takes turns being able to loot mobs.
Group loot - similar to round-robin except higher-quality items are rolled upon.
Need before Greed - players who can use the item roll Need, and the person with the highest roll wins the item.
Keep in mind that many classes use items in Classic they won't use in Battle for Azeroth. Some examples include Hunters using melee weapons for stats and Warriors using Ranged Weapons. In addition, there were no bonuses for using your class' appropriate armor type, so many classes mixed and matched armor, such as Healing Druids rolling on cloth gear.
Ninja looting is
highly
frowned upon, and due to the lack of character transfers, your character's reputation matters. Ninja looters usually find themselves shunned and unwelcome to future groups.
Loot Rewards
In Battle for Azeroth, we're used to looting epics from dungeons that have a chance to Titanforge and proc a higher item level. In Vanilla, most dungeon drops were rare quality, and none could Titanforge. There was a ~1% chance to see epics drop, and these had unique effects such as
Hoja negra de Shahram
or
Marca del Señor Dragón
. There was a "wow!" factor to seeing an epic drop in a vanilla dungeon that has been lost in modern WoW.
However, this rare gear was not necessarily
worse
than epics due to variation in itemization. If you check out our Classic Best in Slot guides, you'll notice that many dungeon drops are recommended over early raid epics.
In Battle for Azeroth, many dungeon drops can also show up as World Quest rewards or items in the weekly cache. In Classic, bosses had unique loot tables, meaning the dungeon loot could only be acquired through running the instance.
Trash gear drops from dungeons were also important in Classic. Uncommon-quality items could roll +spellpower suffixes, making them quite powerful for some classes like
Warlocks
. Each dungeon also had a distinctive set of Bind on Equip drops, most of which were lucrative for twinks and fetch a high price on the Auction House. You can see how all dungeon BoEs rank in

.
Vanilla Loot, outside of Dungeon Set 1 armor, was also horribly mismatched, leading to the phase "clown suit" to describe a player that pursued Best in Slot over matching tier sets. In Battle for Azeroth, loot from all dungeons has the same appearance, plus you can transmog over it.
Maps
There were no official dungeon maps in vanilla WoW. In Battle for Azeroth, we're used to maps with multiple floors showing the exact position of each boss.
Player Cap
In Battle for Azeroth, all dungeons have a cap of five players. In Classic WoW, most dungeons have a cap of 10 players, but a few have 5. However, you cannot complete non-raid quests when in a raid group.

Tier 0 Armor
In Battle for Azeroth, players can pick up cosmetic "Replica" armor from the Darkmoon Faire each month; these appearances are based on actual class specific gear sets which can be obtained from specific dungeon bosses, referred to as Tier 0. These eight-piece sets came with set bonuses, and even if the full set wasn't particularly useful, it is still commonly seen as a status symbol to have a full matching set.
You can preview all the sets in the
Dungeon Set 1 Guide
.
Later on in Classic WoW, you will be able to upgrade this armor set to Dungeon Set 2, involving summoning unique bosses and completing a speed run of Undead Stratholme. You can learn more in our
