The priest is a spellcaster with a diverse portfolio of spells. This class has the most potent healing spells, as well as excellent buffs. It also has good defensive spells that can ward allies from physical dangers and spells, as well as purely offensive shadow spells. However, as a primary spellcaster, the priest is extremely fragile, with poor health and weak melee power. - World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004

Shadow Priest are built around two primary Spells, Forma de las Sombras and Tejido de las Sombras. While in Shadowform, all Shadow Spells cast by the Priest will have increase damage dealt, powerful Spells such as Palabra de las Sombras: Dolor, Explosión mental, and Despelleje mental. While in Shadowform, the Priest can not cast Holy Spells. While most Classes just look at Racial Abilities to decide their preferred Race, Priests have to also take into consideration special Class specific Racial Spells. Apparently, each of the Races in Azeroth practice their own Religions, and each Religion has their own Priests that wield unique Spells (Although the Humano and Enano Religions seem to be pretty similar).

Power Infusion builds focus more on boosting raid performance at the expense of the Priest's own healing, placing Power Infusion on their highest DPS ally.

Holy:

Spiritual Healing builds are the most common all-purpose healing specializations, which eschew the difficult to use Pozo de Luz in order to free up talent points for increased flexibility. The build can choose between investing more points in Holy for greater healing output, or keeping points in Discipline to greatly increase mana efficiency.

Shadow:

Shadowform builds enable the Priests true DPS playstyle, which can be very strong, but is also extremely mana and threat intensive, which can be severely limiting in PvE encounters. Despite this, there is always at least one Shadow Priest in any raid in order to debuff the target with Tejido de las Sombras. In PvP, Shadow Priests are extremely formidable, largely due to the wide array of offensive and defensive utility.

Mana is what you pay to cast your spells if your class has any spellcasting capability. These classes are mages, priests, warlocks, druids, shaman, paladins, and hunters. The spells of these classes have mana costs that must be paid in order to be cast. The amount of mana you have is set by your class, with primary spellcasters, like priests and mages, getting more than hybrid spellcasters, such as druids and shaman. Classes that are even less reliant on spells, such as hunters and paladins, have even less mana. In addition, your character’s intellect gives you a bonus to mana. Each class gets a different amount of bonus mana, with primary spellcasters getting more for each point of intellect than other spellcasters. Your mana is displayed as a blue bar next to your character portrait. - World of Warcraft Game Manual, 2004

Many Priests who had dreams of melting faces as Shadow will stay Holy, forever. And there is nothing sadder than that.

I was one of those...

And my Raid didn't even accept ONE Shadowpriest...

Once BC hit I FINALLY went Shadow and kept with that until today.

Just wanted ask few things about Horde race pick. Maybe get your comment on few things. At first i feel both Undead and Troll are really good races for Shadow Priest. But i do feel you didnt get full picture of Troll race strengths what it can offer.

-Hex of Weakness
You will be using it as rank 1 spell 95% time. Really low cost healing debuff. It can be useful in duels vs priest, Paladins and Shamans. If i remember right they cant remove curse. Even in group pvp it can be good to cast targets who has priests healing. But there is risk of having mage or Druid decurse it, But still it just little mana at rank 1 just to get -20% healing. You cant have always warrior doing mortal strike on all targets unless you always duo fighting with one.

-Shadowguard
Like you say its powerful. It gets bonus spell damage added to every thick. So you get 3x time spell power for one cast. I know you wont get much spell power. Still thing to remember. Its damage will push back spells if someone is spamming casting time or channeling spells on you. It only works spell what has travel time.. like all Bolt spells from Warlock, Mage and Shaman. You can have it pre caster when you feel like you going in a fight. So first one might not even cast mana. In a fight you can it do more damage than DP if someone is attack you.

-Berserking
Yeh it can be tricky use it as Shadow priest. But there is more than Mind blast. You can spam mana burn quickly to win fight vs casters. Other come back uses is when you need quick big heal. Drop from Shadow form (hopefully feared target first) Pop berserking then inner focus (As Troll wont use it in DP) Cast faster big heal with high crit % bonus. Then maybe 2nd heal or pop back to shadow for fast mind blast. You could start this combo with berserking mind blast before you go for heal.

- Undead Devouring plague and WotF
Just few things i see in Undead. DP is high cost spell with 3min CD. Its super strong in few fights. But there is so many class what can remove it and Every dwarf can counter it with racial. Inner Focus is always good to burn on it. I just feel there are fight where you can use it or is super risky.. it feels bad if it get resisted. It can win fight vs few class but i feel its not spell for every situation. Its CD is long too.

WotF yeh it can be powerful. But i feel its only really useful vs Warlocks.. alliance wont be running much of them. Vs warrior fear. You should be winning vs warrior anyway. Priest fear is nice to be able counter one of them but cd is not that short. You often pick talent what give you ok % to resist fear.

As last words i feel both are good Shadow Priest races but i feel you dumbed Troll too much and said Undead is clear winner. I just feel Undead stuff is very situational PvP moments. Like need face warlock and not to face classes or race what can counter DP. Troll is better for PvE and more general power in PvP. Still vs Warlock you alway wish to be Undead. Still your guide was good and useful. But i just felt different for race pick info. Maybe get your comment in the points i saw.

The wrong Hex of Weakness spells are linked (this is the proper Rank 6 for example: Maleficio de debilidad). Blizz buffed it the patch before Naxx by adding a -20% Healing Taken debuff to it (it doesn't stack with MS tho) and reduced the mana cost.

Otherwise great guide. I especially love the detail on the spell co-efficients.

Your race choice section for Horde is way off. You completely disregard Troll shadow priest when it comes to racials, especially for PvP. It has to be UD bias or just plain inexperience, because any amount of research would easily show that Trolls come out ahead. WotF is only useful in like 5 PvE fights in the entirety of Vanilla WoW. It's good for PvP but you're over-hyping devouring plague massively. The numerous benefits Troll provides far outweigh WotF.

For starters, EVERY class in the game can dispel devo plague with one easily available jungle remedy... it has a high drop rate from level 30 mobs in STV so it's not difficult to farm. Plus, any dispeller worth their salt in organised PvP/BG's is going to dispel it instantly, and you'll have wasted TWO cooldowns because of inner focus. As you rightly stated, it's never going to be used in PvE raids, so devouring plague is only useful for leveling, or in duels against people who are too lazy to get jungle remedies, which shadow priest wins 90% of the time anyway... It's a garbage ability and a trap.

Shadowguard on the other hand, scales heavily with spellpower, causes spell pushback on enemy casters, and it interupts rogue/warrior openers frequently due to blackout stuns. It even procs ranged stuns on hunters/mages etc in PvP. It's godlike and causes a LOT of damage in duels. It even has minor use in PvE due to the fact that it procs off the AoE spell effects that many bosses pump out. You'll only get the 3 procs from pre-casting before engaging the boss due to mana cost, but extra damage is extra damage. It's a ton of extra damage in PvP & a little extra damage in PvE that Undead priests won't have.

Hex of Weakness is infinitely better than the trash one that Undead have too. You can spam rank 1 hex on an entire BG group to mortal strike everyone. PLUS it can't be dispelled by paladins. It's also really good for world pvp where people use health potions, or for dueling classes with self-heals.

Berserking is probably where your guide is the most wrong. It works with MANA BURN. This is godly for PvP. It's also excellent for situations where you are off-healing in PvE. Plus, on classic WoW beta it works out as being over 40% casting speed at 40% HP due to it increasing cast speed & animation speed. This 40% was confirmed as NOT being a bug by Blizzard during the beta, so it'll be in classic. That's huge for PvP where you can rapidly heal to full during a fear or while LOS'ing in BG's, or completely OOM an enemy healer with rapid mana burn spam.

I've played both varieties of shadow priest on vanilla realms for years, and Troll wins every time. I'm actually blown away that Wowheads official guide can contain such misinformation.

Comentario de Valkmore

The only problem with playing a Shadow Priest, is that any raid will only need 1.

Having 1 Shadow priest can buff ALL the warlocks and can actually do considerable dmg if given 2 things: 1) A paladin judging wisdom on the boss and 2) a debuff slot for SW:Pain.

Mathematically, SWP will be a larger dps gain than warlock's corruption, and with 16 debuffs there's arguably room for SWP and Judge. of Wisdom. A good rotation that doesn't clip SW:Pain would be: SWP, MB, MF,MF,MF, MB, MF, MF, MF Repeat. This will last a solid minute without any help in mana regen. However, with Pots, Runes, and Judgement of Wis. a spellpower maxed S.Priest can do top tier damage in 2-3 min fights. For fights over 3 mins simply swap to only SWP, 1 MB and 6x MF then repeat. Downrank the MindFlays if necessary in super long fights.

We know from history / experience that the S.Priest of vanilla only went OOM too quickly because they blew their mana on too many Mind Blasts. Taking the talent to decrease MindBlast's cooldown is foolish and will just make you OOM that much faster. Prioritize nothing but Spell Power and 6% Spell Hit and you (and your raid) will be happy with your dps numbers and contribution to others (see warlocks).

I would like to confirm a few truths about TROLL Beserking racial

It sets off global cooldown. 1.5 seconds for a caster (thats equivelent to a 15% increase in cast time over its activation 1.5/10 = 0.15)

The Haste brackets are: 100-70% (10% haste) // 69-40% (20% haste) // 40-dead (30% haste)

The use of beserking racial at any health level above 70% is a net casting time loss of 5%
proof:
3 second cast becomes 2.7, 3 casts = 8.1, add global = 9.6 seconds to cast 3 3second heals .. compared to not using beserking 3 x 3 = 9 seconds to cast 3 3second heals.
What about that mana burn? 2 seconds with talents!
2 seconds becomes 1.8 seconds, cast mana burn 5 times for 9 seconds total, add global = 10.5 seconds ... compared to not using beserking 5 x 2 = 10 seconds.

Theres NO benifit to trolls racial Beserking when activated above 70% health, and its only marginally better between 40-69% health (5% to be precise).

Lets move onto HEX. This is powerful in PvP, it can be spammed for little mana, it has range (unlike mortal strikes which require melee). This makes HEX the most awesome annoyance In a s.priests arsenal (i rate it higher than vamp since all s.priests have vamp). Though many will deem WotF as the PvP goto racial, many forget that the reduction in healing from HEX actually gives a s.priest a fighting chance against warlocks (still a downhill struggle), a good way to pressure healers at range, and another 'curse' for certain classes to waste their mana removing. IMO HEX is the goto PvP talent for horde s.priests.

I would like to cover some PvE aspects of the horde choices too - we all aware that there is limited debuff slots, and therefore if any s.priest does get to raid, flay and blast are the only spells leaving your fingers (unless there is space for a SW:P). This makes HEX useless in raid, esp as it lasts 2 minutes, whereas a mortal strike will drop in 10 seconds and is 50%. Devouring Plague on the other hand, can be useful in fights where there are longer travel/movement phases, such as Onyxias flight phase, and the WotF is useful at several bosses should you be out of totem range or group.

So my breakdown would be that for HORDE
PvP = Troll (only due to hex, beserking is almost pointless, by the time youre below 40% hp youre most likely getting ganked)
PvE = Undead

Comentario de Ashreon

At the end of the day, only one lucky Priest will get to raid as Shadow in their Guild.

Nope, not even. You had one holy priest spec 20 in to Shadow and get the Shadow Weaving talent then have that person keep the Shadow Weaving talent up and running.

I don't know what is up with all the Specs that were not viable and which no one used in Vanilla (for obvious reasons) gets posted on this site. All you do is leave a lot of hopeful people in the dust whom down the road will realize that no one will take them in their raid/dungeon group as they play a subpar spec which other specs of their class and/or classes can fulfill much better.
Sigh.
