Hi there,
This is in no form some kind of qq.
Something has been concerning me for a few days now. before posting i have tried to find the answer by myself. Before WoTLK i have always played melee so i'm pretty comfortable with using keybinds and following rotations. Now when WotLK came along i picked up a DK and got him to 76 before i decided that it was time for me to go and try out ranged. Now with my DK in northrend instances i always finished them with being n1 DPS overall and boss fights. I got my lock to 74 with who i can hit upto a average of 2k dps on level 70 dummy, Now with my 72 survival hunter i can hit upto 1.3k dps(i know its 2 levels of difference but will it change 700dps?) which is kinda disappointing because nomatter how hard i try, or how fast i try to get my rotation done it wont get higher. So the big question is, does this mean that hunter is much more gear depending than any other class ? While i play as good as i can with other classes i can perform very well, without the gear.
I'm a person who likes to read and search out about a class in order to get out of it as much as it can be. So, yes i know it can ofcourse also be me and maybe i'm doing something totally wrong. I just really want to love my hunter and get him to 80 and be known as a good performing hunter, but right now i do not see a bright future.
Rotation is; ES-BA-ST-ES-AS-SS-SS
I have cd's and racial all bind into a macro (orc )
By this i just hope that someone can tell me that it gets better later on, furthur more i love the hunter concept and want to be good at it! Thank you for your time.
excuses for the grammer.

Well, it's tough to really measure DPS for any level other than 80 because the classes aren't balenced for it. That being said, Your spec could have a major part to do with it, along with your "rotation".
At level 72, a spec like this is probably what I would recommend. Tweak any points as you see fit.
As for your rotation. That's one thing that's hard to do as a Hunter right now. It's not much of a rotation, it's a priority system of shots. What I mean is that the most important shot will be first, then the next will be second, etc...
Kill Shot (Fire it whenever you can as it's your best shot)
Explosive Shot - (Whenever it's off cooldown)
Black Arrow - (Whenever it's off cooldown)
Serpent Sting - (Always keep it refreshed)
Aimed Shot
Steady Shot - (When you aren't doing anything else)
KS > ES > BA > SrS > AS > SS

Honestly, at 80, Skill > Gear for any class. I've out dps'd other people when they out gear me and yet i've been beaten by someone who really shouldn't have beat me.

Yeah as stated above by Pezwar its hard to measure DPS for any class before 80. The Gear, Talent Points, and Skills are constantly changing.
But as far as shot rotation goes, as long you have Black Arrow , Explosive Shot, Serpent Sting, Steady Shot and Aimed Shot; it should remain relatively the same.
Most Hunters do use shots based on a priority system but i have always used the same rotation for all my raids and my DPS is constant and only changes when my gear is upgraded.
My rotation is:
Black Arrow - increases DMG from all sources
Serpent Sting
Explosive Shot
Steady Shot x 2 - By the time you pull off the second Steady Shot, Explosive Shot should be ready
From there I just refresh Black Arrow and Serpent Sting as needed and continue my ES - SS - SS - ES rotation.
And when my Lock and Load Procs I use:
Explosive Shot
Aimed Shot -
I only use Aimed Shot when LnL Procs.
Explosive Shot
