How We Retire Artifact Weapons (7.3.5 Spoilers)

Through datamining, we have learned more on how we will retire our artifact weapons leading up to Battle for Azeroth, and go back to using regular weapons.
We have known for a while that the artifact weapon progression system is limited to just this expansion, but previously it was unclear as to how we'd transition to using weapon drops again (although the datamined method lines up pretty well with a common theory).
Learn more about 7.3.5 in the
Patch 7.3.5 Content Hub
.
Spoilers
Datamined dialogue from Magni Bronzebeard (encrypted voice over):
The sword of Sargeras is poisonin' the very lifeblood of the world.
The only vessels capable o' containin' that kind o' power...
are the mighty weapons you wield.
Raise them up as one.... draw out the corruption from the Dark Titan's blade!
Together, champions! For Azeroth!
There is an in-game cutscene called
7.3.5 Artifact Weapon Retirement
.
This of course raises more questions. What happens to the corruption already absorbed by Azeroth and how will we heal her? Isn't it risky for us to be carrying around corrupted weapons?
Another question is when this will all happen. It's likely that this could happen at the
end
of Patch 7.3.5. Frequently we can test things on the PTR that are not present when the patch starts on live servers (a good example is raid testing, which is tested in the .0 patch but goes live in the .5 patch).
On the 7.3.5 PTR, the Wound in the World is updated to be glowing yellow instead of red. The sword is missing (currently a purple cube) so we assume it has changed as well. See more pictures

Curious about making progress on your artifact weapon and collecting appearances? Check out our general
unlocking appearances guide
and
hidden appearances guide
.
There are two artifact-related things you
must
do before Legion ends if you are interested in transmog:
You must acquire the main tint of the
Mage Tower Appearance
before Legion ends. You do not need to acquire the other tints during Legion in order to get and use them for transmog.
One of the tints of the "Balance of Power" style requires
Schlüsselsteinmeister
. You must get
Schlüsselsteinmeister
achievement
before
Legion ends to unlock and use that
specific
Balance of Power tint for transmog. You do NOT need to complete
Gleichgewicht der Kräfte
before Legion ends for the Mythic tint. If you just have the Mythic achievement during Legion, you can complete
Gleichgewicht der Kräfte
after Legion, and the dungeon tint will automatically unlock.
