Wowhead's Plans for Classic WoW - We're Making A Site!
With the playable Classic WoW demo at BlizzCon, we at Wowhead wanted to share our plans for Classic WoW on the site! We are committed to bringing you a great set of Classic tools and guides, matching the quality of our Battle for Azeroth resources. Classic is an exciting and game-changing addition to World of Warcraft and we plan to provide a comprehensive resource, using the skills and passion of our development and content teams to make the site shine.
Currently, the Wowhead team is already hard at work creating the framework to support the Classic data. Whenever we can access Blizzard's Classic data, Wowhead's classic database will be created shortly thereafter -
. This database will support all existing features such as filters, model viewer, comments, screenshots, and tooltips for use on 3rd party sites. When the Classic site goes live, we'll be porting over all old screenshots and comments! We are also investigating the possibility of displaying old comments from Thottbot.
News and Guides
Using Wowhead's existing framework for the Classic site allows us to easily port over other useful aspects of the site, such as news and guides. With news, we can highlight interesting community events, podcasts, and player accomplishments. For our guide section, we're aiming to explain all major aspects of the game for players eager to revisit Classic, and are in talks with the ClassiCast crew on growing our guide system.
Wowhead's popularity grew from our early talent calculator, and we hope the Classic Talent Calculator will be the first of many classic-themed tools on the site. We have ideas for additional tools, based on community interest, related to topics such as the Honor grind or the complicated array of class raid buffs.
While we are adding more-modern elements of Wowhead to our Classic site, like news and guides, we have decided to go with old-school styling that reflects an earlier version of the site, including the logo and menus.
We are really excited to be developing Classic Wowhead and announcing new features when the game is playable. If you are interested in working with us or contributing to the Classic site, please contact us at .
Edit: Thanks for the overwhelming support everyone! I've compiled some of the frequently asked questions and our answers from the comments below:
Can Classic Wowhead look like Thottbot?
We are looking into providing a light-colored reskin of Classic Wowhead.
Will the Thottbot domain redirect to Classic Wowhead?
Yes, we will change the redirect.
Can Thottbot comments be viewed on Wowhead?
We can't guarantee this will 100% work, but are actively looking into porting Archives of the Thottbot comments onto Classic Wowhead. This is above-board legally as ZAM, Wowhead's parent company, also owned Thottbot.
Will premium work on Wowhead?
Premium should work on Classic Wowhead automatically, as it's a subdomain of regular Wowhead. Similar to how you get benefits on the PTR domain.
What news can you cover without datamining?
There are lots of community events, podcasts, and player feats of strength we are interested in highlighting.
Will the Wowhead Client work for classic?
We have plans to make sure the Wowhead Client works on Classic WoW.
Why use a version of Wowhead instead of a brand-new site?
Wowhead has a suite of tools and features already set up tailored to World of Warcraft, which lets us save a lot of work when spinning up a new site. As for using Wowhead's framework but partitioning off the Classic branch with a new name, this was something we've tried previously with other games and it led to a lot of technical complications.
