Today is the anniversary of
Mists of Pandaria Patch 5.4: Siege of Orgrimmar
. On September 10th, 2013, 8 years ago today, we first set foot on the Timeless Isle introducing a fantastic new sandbox approach to zone gameplay with rares, puzzles, treasure galore, and the wanton slaughter of every turtle in sight. We also finally took the battle back to the corrupted Garrosh Hellscream as Horde and Alliance joined forces to lay siege to Orgrimmar and we discovered the full extent of Garrosh's wicked depravity in the ultimate raid of the expansion.
The highlights of the patch are adapted from our Patch 5.4 Guide, written all those years ago.
New Raid:

Introduced with the above epic cinematic,
决战奥格瑞玛
was the final raid of Mists of Pandaria. In it, players worked to free Orgrimmar from the clutches of Garrosh and his Kor'kron regime.

New raid type: Flex mode
Flex mode was introduced as a solution to having a hard number of players in a raid. Its evolution remains today in our Normal and Heroic raids, while Mythic raids adhere to the old fixed number of players paradigm.
Players form a raid with 10-25 players and the bosses' health and damage will scale up or down
The difficulty is easier than Normal
It's intended to reward players for the social interaction of forming their own group instead of randomly queuing
The rewards are better than LFR
New Zone:

The bronze dragonflight has discovered a most unusual pandaren phenomenon. Emerging from the mists, far off the coast of the Jade Forest - an island that was lost in time!
It is a dangerous place, perhaps the most perilous in all of Pandaria. But we are determined to unravel its mysteries.

is a sandbox environment filled with rare spawns, World Bosses, and secret events. Daily Quest fatigue amongst players led to very few daily quests in this zone, allowing players to group up with friends to kill mobs and hunt rare spawns for vanity items without having to worry about grinding out epics for progression raiding.

was a new faction on the
永恒岛
. There were no daily quests or "mandatory" epics to grind out for this reputation, it was all about killing World Boss, Ordon, for vanity loot. Vanity loot cost

New Pet Battle Dungeon:
天神比武大会
The Celestial Tournament was the very first Pet Battle Dungeon! Players can still take on this weekly challenge to pit their best pets against Pandaria's toughest pet teams and legendary elite pets for fun and prizes. The
天神比武大会
is open to players that have 15+ max level pets. Players fight three teams (randomly selected from nine preset ones), and then move onto fighting the four elite Celestials. Players who heal their pets are disqualified in this precursor to today's Heroic Pet Dungeon mode. For winning the weekly tournament, players get a
天神铸币
which can be used to purchase special battle pets and supplies.
This also marks the introduction of Wowhead's battle pet tool, the
Battle Pet Team Calculator
for players to import their in-game pet teams, create their ideal teams, and compare their teams against other player and trainer teams.
New Scenario: the

Proving Grounds were solo challenges that both allowed new players to learn a new role in a comfortable setting, or seasoned players to try something difficult and competitive.
Proving Grounds allowed users to select Tank, Healer, or DPS challenges.
Proving Grounds came in Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Endless difficulties. In Endless mode, you simply battled on until you failed the challenge.
Rewards included achievements for completing various difficulties and spec challenges, as well as titles (

) for beating Wave 30 on Endless.
New Legendary: Cloak
A long and questline involving Wrathion culminated in the final reward, a Legendary Cloak. There were several versions of the cloak that were intended for specific specs:

: The Endurance of Niuzao fully absorbs the damage of one attack that would normally kill you. This effect has a 2 min cooldown. Does not function for non-Tank-specialized characters.

: Your damaging spell casts have a chance to empower you with the Essence of Yu'lon, causing you to hurl jade dragonflame at the target, dealing 1 (+ 200% of Spell power) damage over 4 sec. This damage also affects up to 4 other enemies near the burning target. (Approximately procs per minute)

: Your helpful spells have a chance to grant you Spirit of Chi-Ji, increasing all healing done by 5% and causing all overhealing on players to be redistributed to up to 5 nearby injured friends, for 10 sec. (Approximately 0.58 procs per minute)

: Your damaging attacks have a chance to trigger a Flurry of Xuen, causing you to deal 1 (+ 20% of Attack power) damage to up to 5 enemies in front of you (hunter: current target and up to 4 enemies around them), every 0.3 sec for 3 sec. (Approximately procs per minute).
Eight years later, the influence of systems introduced in Patch 5.4 is still palpable in current World of Warcraft.
