We've already
reported that Blizzard has added new LGBT+ Pride-themed apparel
to their merch store. The t-shirts and hoodies have the word "Blizzard" written in rainbow font, a design that references the Pride rainbow flag.
With this announcement came a certain amount of criticism, specifically that Blizzard is practicing "rainbow capitalism" - where large companies financially benefit off Pride merchandise without taking any meaningful steps to help the Pride community. It's a valid concern, but one that Blizzard employee, Valentine Powell, who identifies as both queer and trans, wishes to clear up.
In a thread posted to Twitter, Valentine stated that the design was a "labor of love" created by LGBT Blizzard Employees for Pride, and that these employees are the ones who have wanted to them made publicly available. Valentine also referenced the
enamel pins
Blizzard released for the
Trevor Project
in 2019. Valentine ended the thread referencing how inaccessible video game spaces can often feel for members of the LGBT+ community, and how Valentine and other LGBT+ employees at Blizzard have been trying to change that.
