Welcome to our overview of the biggest leveling changes in Classic WoW as compared to Battle for Azeroth! While leveling and exploration has been around since vanilla, much has changed over 15 years. If you've been playing BFA without any Vanilla experience but want to get into Classic, or are a Vanilla vet that wants a refresher course, these are the largest changes to the leveling experience you should know about.
Classic WoW Class Leveling Guides
In these WoW Classic Leveling guides, you'll learn about best questing zones, leveling talents and builds, spells to buy while leveling, ability rotations, best gear, and recommended stats.

Class/Race Combinations
There are fewer races and classes available in Classic WoW--no Allied Races, Goblins, Worgen, Draenei, Blood Elves, or Pandaren. In addition, some older races did not have access to some classes present in Classic WoW:
Dwarves cannot be Mages, Shamans, or Warlocks
Gnomes cannot be Hunters or Priests
Humans cannot be Hunters
Night Elves cannot be Mages
Orcs cannot be Mages
Tauren cannot be Paladin or Priests
Trolls cannot be Druids or Warlocks
Undead cannot be Hunters
Character Services
There are no character boosts in Classic WoW, as well as other character services at launch. Once you create your character and start to level, you are stuck with their server, appearance, and race.
Make sure you're happy with the character that you create because in order to change it, you need to restart.
There is also no barbershop in Classic WoW, so you can not change your appearance in-game. There are also fewer hairstyles, as some were added during Cataclysm. In addition, the character models are not as detailed in Classic WoW; you can compare your character's appearance using both versions of our
Dressing Room
.
Dungeon/Group Finder
In Battle for Azeroth, many players use group finder tools to automatically sync up with players interested in the same content. However, in Classic WoW, grouping up requires you to talk to other players, inspecting them in person to see their gear. General chat was frequently used to coordinate finding other players, and it was common to add people to your friends list if you enjoyed playing with them.
Use our
Classic WoW Glossary
if you have trouble deciphering the terminology in General Chat.
Dynamic Scaling
Since patch 7.3.5, questing zones now scale to your level. As long as you have enough level to start questing in that zone, you're able to stay there till you run out of quests for that zone, or you reach the maximum scaling level for that zone. Here is a breakdown of the scaling in BFA:
Starting areas: 1-20
Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms: 10-60
Outland and Northrend: 58-80
Cataclysm and Pandaria: 80-90
Warlords: 90-100
Legion: 98-110
Kul Tiras/Zandalar: 110-120
In Classic, questing zones do not scale to your level. You must choose between a handful of zones in your appropriate level range.
Economy / Auction House
In Classic, Capital City auction houses are faction specific, but the neutral AH in Tanaris can be used to mule items between factions. Learn more in the
Classic Auction House Guide
.
Heirlooms and Account-Bound Items
There are no heirlooms in Classic WoW. This means you have no easily-accessible account-wide gear or, most importantly, experience boosts.
Virtually nothing in Classic is account-bound or can be traded cross-server. Only BoEs can be traded across characters on the same server, and only in the same faction.
Leveling Survivability
Many modern abilities you've come to rely on are not present in Classic WoW, making leveling more dangerous. You will likely not be able to take on groups of mobs while questing solo, and may what to level with a healer for survivability, as well as stockpiling food and bandages. It is also encouraged to party up with people on the same quest.
Maps and Tracking
Quests and Objectives are not displayed on the map. To put it simply, you will have to do some exploring; if you are lost at some point during a quest you might have to read the quest or go to an external website, to find out where you are supposed to be going. Part of the game is feeling immersed in a world to create an adventure all your own.
Quest Hubs
Since
Cataclysm
, questing has been a lot more direct: many important quests appear upon login, take you through several elegantly designed hubs, each of which branch into a series of quest lines that ultimately conclude in tying together a coherent story told throughout the zone.
In Classic, there are still major quest hubs, but they are less clearly defined and finding many quests is left entirely up to you and your desire to explore. Besides, purely questing through a zone won't guarantee you a certain level, you will frequently need to grind mobs in between questing to create a genuinely efficient leveling experience.
Quest Rewards
Quest rewards are more distinctive in Classic, making specific quests worthwhile to do. In addition, dungeon quests are scattered around the world, not located inside the dungeon like they are in Battle for Azeroth.
As there are no bonuses for equipping armor of a preferred type for your class, you may find yourself mixing and matching different armor types for whatever provides the most stats.
Talents, Specs, Abilities
The talent system went through a major overhaul ever since Vanilla. In Battle for Azeroth, instead of having three trees of talents with mostly small tuning pieces, you must choose your specialization, which then unlocks the core abilities and traits of it. You can preview the vanilla talents in our
Classic Talent Calculator
.
In Battle for Azeroth, you can change your specialization at any time, without any cost, as long as you're out of combat. In order to change talents, you must be out of combat and you either need to be in a resting zone, like a major city or inn or to be under the effect of special items that allow you to change talents on the fly, like special Tomes.
In Classic WoW, players must visit a Class Trainer in order to change their talent tree selections. This process has a cost attached to it, which starts as a small fee but increases every time you perform it, up to a cap of . This cost is reduced by per month, to a minimum of . Therefore, players generally stick with one talent build as they level, instead of constantly swapping.
However, class specialization trees are less niche in Classic than they are in BFA; it's not uncommon to see someone with points in a DPS tree tank, or other hybrid builds of multiple specs. Just because someone decides to level as Arms without respeccing (due to the prohibitive cost) doesn't mean they can't still tank a dungeon while leveling.
As for class abilities, they are awarded automatically as you level up in BFA, but in Classic, you must go back to your trainer to learn them at various levels. Many abilities also have ranks, with higher ranks providing stronger versions of an ability, although some healers may want to
purposely downrank
for various reasons.
Transportation and Flying
Riding is another system that has changed dramatically since Vanilla. In Classic WoW, the speed of your mount is associated with the mount itself. In Battle for Azeroth, you need to purchase Riding Skill with Gold, and all your mounts will adapt to the riding skill you currently have learned.
Most mounts are account-wide in Battle for Azeroth, while none are in Classic, so every character must earn their riding skill and mounts separately. The Mount Collection system is also not present in Classic, meaning your bags will be taken up by mounts.
There is also no flying in Classic WoW--you are either traveling on foot or on a ground mount. There are also fewer flight masters, portals, and teleport items in Classic WoW, as well as no Portal Room, making Mage Portals extremely valuable and lucrative.

Zone Experience
Zones don't guarantee a certain amount of levels. Once again, coming from BFA or one of the later expansions, you might be used to finishing a zone (Vol'Dun for instance) and expecting to be two levels higher. In Classic, the difficulty of zones vary, and especially as a
潜行者
, you will want to do a lower difficulty quest. You'll find yourself bouncing between a few zones at any given level range.
Zone Changes
Zones have received many changes over the years. Azeroth was forever changed with Deathwing's passage on the event that set the beginning of the Cataclysm expansion.
Zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms were changed in both the
cosmetic way
and several of them also had their
leveling flow and range changed
. For example, Thousand Needles in Classic WoW had an ice sheet and desert. In Battle for Azeroth it is flooded.
