Analysis of Tier 4 Burning Crusade DPS Rankings - Week 2
Good day fellow Burning Crusaders! Today we will look at the balance - or imbalance - between DPS classes in Magtheridon's Lair, Gruul's Lair, and Karazhan in the first two weeks of Burning Crusade. For this analysis we have used data from
Warcraft Logs Statistics
pages for Karazhan, Gruul's Lair, and Magtheridon's Lair accessed on 6/14/2021.

Disclaimers and Sources
The data in this article is taken from the
Warcraft Logs Karazhan Statistics Page
for the 95th percentile and
Warcraft Logs Gruul & Magtheridon Statistics Page
for the 95th percentile. There are a few things to take into consideration before we delve into the data:
Talent specializations that are believed to be weaker are generally played less, which causes them to appear slightly weaker than they actually are.
Performance-oriented players tend to choose the classes and talent specializations that are believed to be the best. This further increases the gap between the top and bottom talent specializations.
This is very early in Burning Crusade, so the players that appear in this data are a small subset of all the players in Burning Crusade. Only players who have managed to reach max level and complete raids already are accounted for in this data. Most players gear is fairly weak for the same reason.
Considering only the 95th percentile means we are only looking at the top 5% of the representatives of each class and specialization - 19 out of 20 players will not perform at this level. This is done to filter out the people who enjoy the game without fully maximizing their character's effectiveness in raids. That is a totally okay thing to do, but not what we are interested in here.
We are looking at only boss damage. Classes with strong multi-target damage abilities will move up in the rankings when considering overall boss and trash damage throughout a raid.
Most of the absolute top parses involve a raid group that rotates
s into a particular group to give multiple casts of
in the same fight. It is nearly impossible to compete with those parses if you are not in a similar situation. A weaker class with that treatment would very likely outperform a stronger class without that treatment.
Magtheridon's Lair and Gruul's Lair
As expected, we see
s dominating the individual damage dealt metrics in these raids. With the massive rebalancing of classes from Classic to Burning Crusade, these two are the clear winners.
s received highly impactful powerful new talents like
and amazing new spells
. With careful timing,
s are able to cast
without interrupting their Auto Shots, resulting in a
of extra damage.
s are more powerful for a few reasons - better scaling on their main damage source
and more debuff slots available enabling the use of
are two of the biggest changes for
who were top damage dealers in Classic have fallen down in the rankings for a few different reasons. In Classic these classes benefited more than any other from powerful world buffs. The removal of world buffs hurts everyone, but hurts
more than the others. In Burning Crusade Classic, enemies have a lot more armor compared to Classic. With standard raid armor debuffs bosses go from mitigating 0-5% of physical damage in Classic to mitigating 17-25% of physical damage in Burning Crusade Classic. This armor change hurts
s as well, but the incredibly powerful buffs they received far outweigh this change.
Magtheridon, High King Maulgar, and Gruul the Dragonkiller are all effectively single-target encounters and have very little trash. The individual mobs on High King Maulgar are often separated making it ineffective to use area damage effects. While
have powerful area of effect damage from spells like
s lack such tools and will fall behind a bit in total output during engagements where area of effect damage is possible - like Moroes in Karazhan.
In Karazhan we see
still dominant but not quite as much.
with strong area damaging abilities move up in the rankings even with just a few multi-target fights like Moroes and Terestian Illhoof. If we looked at overall boss and trash damage, I'm sure these classes would be even better still - but Warcraft Logs does not rank that data in Karazhan because they don't have specific requirements for what trash should be killed.
In Karazhan raids we see highly optimized groups less often compared to 25-person raids due to the 10-person raid size. It is far less likely that your damage dealers have
of the desirable group buffs they want like
, or even that all important debuffs are able to be applied.
It is important to remember than in Burning Crusade many classes provide valuable buffs and debuffs to the raid. For example an Arms
may not provide very high individual damage output but they provide
which accounts for a substantial amount of overall damage in the raid. This data does not attribute the damage increases from buffs or debuffs to the individual who provided them. While these buff and debuff classes are generally not desirable to have in large numbers, a raid benefits significantly from having at least one person to provide each relevant buff or debuff - the overall contribution to raid damage is massive.
Since this is so early in the expansion we are likely to see some movement in these rankings. A large number of players aren't max level yet so we have a relatively small sample size to work with right now. As players acquire more powerful equipment there should be some shake ups in these rankings as well as some classes rely on powerful equipment more than others. It will be exciting to see how things change and finally stabilize here in phase 1 of Burning Crusade!
