WoW has gone through many changes since its Classic days. By far, the expansion that brought the most changes to zones was
Cataclysm
, which changed zones in Kalimdor and Eastern Kingdoms to their very core.
On the first steps of the Cataclysm expansion, Deathwing awoke from his slumber in the depths of Deepholm, and literally erupted into the world. His explosion into Azeroth was so powerful that it tore a rift between the Elemental Plane and Azeroth, and this caused all sorts of natural disasters like erupting volcanos, tsunamis, and earthquakes, reshaping Azeroth forever.
Many zones were permanently changed to accommodate flying mounts in those places, but also as a way to show that the game's storyline has advanced. This guide will display all zone changes that happened from Classic to Cataclysm, as well as pictures of older and newer maps, and screenshot comparisons of the most affected areas.
In this overview, we are
NOT
covering zones that changed, but have the option to be time-travelled back to its previous stage. This guide is meant to document zones that suffered permanent changes and their original state can no longer be accessed without Classic WoW.
To return to the past in those respective zones, and see what they looked like before the following events, head to the zone and find the bronze dragon
Zidormi
.
The zones we are not covering, as well as their changes, are:
Teldrassil
: Teldrassil was burned down by the Horde during the pre-patch event of Battle for Azeroth, War of Thorns.
Dustwallow Marsh
: The alliance city of Theramore was destroyed by the Horde using a mana-bomb during the pre-patch event of Mists of Pandaria, Theramore's Fall.
Silithus
: After adventurers defeat Argus the Unmaker in the
安托鲁斯,燃烧王座
raid, Sargeras plunged his sword into Azeroth, before being imprisoned by the Pantheon. This attack destroyed Silithus.
Tirisfal Glades
: After the Burning of Teldrassil, the Alliance retaliated by attacking Undercity, leaving a trail of destruction. Undercity is now flooded with blight and unliveable.
Arathi Highlands
: Arathi Highlands became a critical source of war between the Horde and the Alliance, after the events of the War of the Thorns. The Alliance rebuilt Stromgarde Keep, and the Horde is attempting to overtake it.
Blasted Lands
: Blasted Lands suffered additional changes in the Warlords of Draenor pre-patch event, Iron Horde incursion. The Iron Horde, coming from the hijacked Dark Portal, destroyed Nethergarde Keep.
Kalimdor
Kalimdor was by far the place that suffered the most from Deathwing's eruption - Many zones were forever reshaped, either by earthquakes, floods or volcanos. However, even with these adversities, some zones managed to flourish like they never did before.
Deathwing's passage through Darkshore devastated a good portion of Darkshore. The previous Alliance hub there, Auberdine, was completely destroyed, and the Night Elves living there had to move further north and settled in Lor'danel.
The zone was heavily ravaged by the elemental disturbing, in the form of a massive chasm leading into a whirlpool and a massive tornado right on the heart of Darkshore. The Shatterspear trolls, previously only visible when passing over the zone through flight paths, or with extreme walljumps, was open for exploration, serving as a Horde settlement.

Darkshore was ravaged by the elements, with a massive whirlpool cutting through the zone and a cyclone right at it's center part. The Shatterspear trolls and the Sentinels are also fighting for control of the northern end of Darkshore.
The destruction occurred in Darkshore was also felt in Ashenvale, at least by the Alliance. The Horde was able to take advantage of this by transforming the coastal Zoram'gar Outpost into a full-blown fortress, as well as launch a direct assault to Astranaar by building Hellscream's Watch, a settlement overlooking Astranaar.
If things were not hard enough for the Elves there, a volcano also erupted right in the middle of Ashenvale, provoked by Deathwing's passage.

Zoram'gar Outpost, before and after Cataclysm, expanded into a fortress.
Although Astranaar hasn't changed a lot from Classic to more recent expansions, Hellscream's Watch was erected overlooking the Alliance city, centering the conflict there. Also, a volcano erupted right in the middle of Ashenvale.
One of the defining features of Cataclysm was Goblins becoming a playable race, aligned with the Horde. As a way to show their newfound allegiance with the Horde, the Bilgewater Cartel completely reshaped the Azshara map in the shape of the Horde symbol. Azshara is now a Horde-controlled zone, and serves as a Goblin-themed questing area.
The Bay of Storms now hosts Bilgewater Harbor, the Goblin capital. Trade Prince Gallywix, the leader of the Bilgewater goblins, also created a pleasure palace all for himself and his guests.
The Azshara map before and after the Cataclysm.
Additions by the Bilgewater Cartel in Azshara include Bilgewater Harbor, Gallywix's Pleasure Palace, and a Rocketway spanning the entire zone.
The Barrens is perhaps the zone that went through the most changes after the Cataclysm. Deathwing's passage literally opened up a lava crater, shattering the zone and cutting it in half! After Cataclysm, the Barrens were separated into two zones: Northern Barrens and Southern Barrens.
Around the Northern Barrens, much of the prarie is now gone thanks to the efforts of the Druid Naralex, originally met by players at the Wailing Caverns instance. Many new oasis and vegetation appeared in the Northern Barrens after players awakening him in the instance.
In Southern Barrens, the changes were less environmental and more diplomatic: Thanks to the chasm created by Deathwing, the Horde lost some of its influence in the Southern Barrens. The Alliance, coming from Theramore, managed to settle two foothold in Southern Barrens with Fort Triumph and Honor's Stand, as well as the destruction of Camp Taurajo, the Tauren settlement near the border of Mulgore.
The Barrens Map before Cataclysm, and after Cataclysm, with its division between Northern and Southern Barrens.
Camp Taurajo, before and after its destruction at the hands of the Alliance.
Thanks to The Great Divide, the lava river that cut The Barrens in half, Horde lost a lot of its influence on Southern Barrens, which allowed the Alliance to create fortifications such as Honor's Stand. However, not all things went badly in Barrens - Thanks to Naralex's efforts, both Northern and Southern Barrens now counts with lots of vegetation.
Desolace is a zone that could definitely use a name change. Thanks to the Cataclysm, the zone flourished in many areas thanks to Deathwing's tremors shattering the earth and allowing the passage of water through the inner parts of the zone.
The Cenarion Circle, investigating these phenomena, settled on the heart of Desolace, on a settlement called the Cenarion Wildlands.
The Desolace map before and after the Cataclysm.
Deathwing's passage shattered Desolace to the point that water can now flow through the inner parts of the zone, allowing vegetation to flourish once more.
The Kodo Graveyard before and after the Cataclysm. The name is more or less ironic now, as the graveyard is rife with vegetation and wildlife.
Although Feralas did not change much landscape-wise, important changes happened: Deathwing managed to ravage both islands on the coast of the zone, destroying the original Feathermoon Stronghold and sinking the Isle of Dread, effectively killing off all Chimaera that provided Tenderloins for the epic recipe Dirge's Kickin'.
Since the Cataclysm, the Alliance raised a new Feathermoon Stronghold, at the coast of Feralas, and the ruins of the old stronghold are now overtaken by Naga.
The Feralas map before and after the Cataclysm.
The original Feathermoon Stronghold, located in an island off the coast of Feralas, was destroyed by Deathwing's passage and its ruins were overtaken by the Naga.
The Alliance raised a new Feathermoon Stronghold, at the coast of Feralas. The southern island, the Isle of Dread, was completely submerged by Deathwing's passage.
Thousand Needles was another zone that went through massive changes - The sea levels being raised by Deathwing's emergence at the Great Sea actually shattered the eastern divide of the zone, allowing the sea water to flood the zone! Iconic locations of the zone, such as the Mirage Raceway at the Shimmering Flats (now known as the Shimmering Deep) are now in ruins underwater.
However, this has not stopped Fizzle Brassbolts and Pozzik from attempting to make money from racing - they have built Fizzle and Pozzik's Speedbarge, a massive boat and artificial island that still hosts floating raceways.
The Thousand Needles map before and after the Cataclysm.
The Mirage Raceway, previously a fixture of the zone, now lies in ruins underwater.
Deathwing's passage broke the eastern divide of the zone, allowing the passage of the sea water to flood Thousand Needles. Many places are now underwater, but some businesses managed to survive - like the owners of the Mirage Raceway, who built an entire artificial island that now resides in the Shimmering Deep.
Tanaris is another zone that suffered with flooding. Although the changes aren't as drastic as other zones, Steamwheedle Port was completely destroyed, and the water levels were raised enough to allow Gadgetzan, previously in the middle of the desert, to have its own port.
The gates of Uldum, previously sealed off, were also destroyed, allowing players to enter the zone.

Steamwheedle Port was completely destroyed, thanks to the flood caused by Deathwing's passage.
TThe water went so deep within Tanaris, that Gadgetzan now has its own port. Another disturbance includes the Gates of Uldum, now destroyed, allowing players to pass into the Cataclysm zone, Uldum.
Eastern Kingdoms
In Eastern Kingdoms, several zones have also received changes, although not all of them were as drastic, or directly caused by Deathwing. Many of the changes here reflect other events that happened through the expansions, like the Fall of the Lich King.
After the Lich King's defeat, the Scourge forces around Lordaeron were weakened enough that the combined might of the Horde and the Alliance were able to drive them back. Andorhal is now at a stalemate between the Horde and the Alliance, and Hearthglen, previously a Scarlet Crusade hub, has been taken over by the Argent Crusade, working as a quest hub for leveling players.
Also thanks to the efforts of the Cenarion Circle, much of the plague has now dissipated, and vegetation is growing again at the Plaguelands. The farms scattered around the zone, previously abandoned, are now rife with life once more.
The Western Plaguelands map before and after the Cataclysm.
Although Andorhal is still in a state of disrepair, it shows signals of healing, as the conflict between the Horde and the Alliance rages on.
The Cenarion Circle's efforts in the zone healed many of the farms. Places like Felstone Field and Dalson's Tears, previously overrun by Scourge, are now again useable and liveable.
Eastern Plaguelands has also seen improvements after the Lich King's defeat, but as the influence of the Scourge there was much higher than Western Plaguelands, the land still has to heal. The Argent Crusade has taken many of previous Scourge bases in the zone and turned them into watchtowers, allowing the safe passage of caravans rummaging through the zone.
Light's Hope Chapel was grown into a more impressive settlement. Places like the Infectis Scar, to help bring life back to the zone, were turned into lakes or other focuses of vegetation.
The Eastern Plaguelands map before and after the Cataclysm.
Light's Hope Chapel has received structural upgrades and now resembles a real fort.
Thanks to the efforts of the Argent Crusade, many former Scourge points of interest were now turned into watchtowers, to guide adventurers and visitors through the zone;
The classic conflict between Southshore and Tarren Mill met its end, with a staggering Horde victory - Southshore was destroyed by the Forsaken and turned into ruins, now flowing with blight.
Another change was a gameplay change - Alterac Mountains, a former zone north of Hillsbrad Foothills, has been merged, now both zones being known as Hillsbrad Foothills.
The Hillsbrad Foothills and Alterac Mountains map before Cataclysm, and both zones merged into Hillsbrad Foothills after.
The war between Tarren Mill and Southshore finally ended with the Horde victorious. Southshore was promptly destroyed.
Deathwing's passage pretty much warped Loch Modan for the worst. He broke the legendary Stonewrought Dam, draining all of the water off the Loch.
The southern end of Loch Modan was also affected as there is now a huge chasm separating the zone from Badlands.
The Loch Modan map before and after the Cataclysm.
The Stonewrought Dam was destroyed by Deathwing.
The Loch ended up drained of all its water. Deathwing also created a huge chasm between Loch Modan and Badlands.
Badlands was one of the zones that suffered the most from Deathwing's passage, with literal volcanoes opening around the zone. Deathwing also laid waste to Kargath, the Horde settlement in Badlands.
The Horde ended up building a new and improved Kargath, while the Steamwheedle goblins built a new settlement with Fuselight and Fuselight-by-the-Sea.
The Badlands map before and after the Cataclysm.
Kargath was destroyed by Deathwing, but the Horde erected New Kargath to serve as their base of operations.
Deathwing erupted many acres of land and volcanoes around Badlands. The goblins, to study this phenomenom, settled in at Fuselight.
Westfall was affected by Deathwing in a different way: Energy beams have scattered across the zone, and the Gold Coast Quarry was completely destroyed in the process, only a crater remaining in its place.
After the defeat of Edwin VanCleef in the Deadmines, Moonbrook was taken over by the Alliance, and Sentinel Hill received fortifications and more strongly resembles a settlement.
The Westfall map before and after the Cataclysm.
The Gold Coast Quarry was completely destroyed by Deathwing.
Sentinel Hill was reformed and now counts with actual fortification walls, resembling an actual fort.
Stranglethorn Vale, the iconic gank zone of Classic, has also been cut in half, this time thanks to a whirlpool - Now divided into Northern Stranglethorn and The Cape of Stranglethorn.
Booty Bay suffered with a tsunami hitting the goblin capital and breaking open the statue at Janeiro's Point, while the Nesingwary Expedition received upgrades.
The Stranglethorn Vale map before Cataclysm, and after Cataclysm, with its division between Northern Stranglethorn and The Cape of Stranglethorn.
Booty Bay was directly hit by a tsunami, and the goblins are in the process of rebuilding the city. Janeiro's Point, the statue that greets visitors coming from the sea, was broken open!
Yojamba Isle, previously occupied by the Zandalar Tribe, was abandoned after the Hakkar menace was no longer there. Nesingwary's Expedition was turned into a more fleshed-out settlement.
Blasted Lands did not suffer changes from Deathwing, but the war between the Alliance and the Horde: Up in the northern part of the zone, the Horde conquered Dreadmaul Hold, and is engaging the Alliance directly on their footsteps at the Nethergarde mine.
The Alliance, thanks to the efforts of the worgens, managed to start healing the Tainted Scar, now named the Tainted Forest. The worgen druids healing the place are now in the settlement of Surwich.

The Horde conquered Dreadmaul Hold, previously held by ogres.
Alliance druids have started healing the Tainted Scar, with much of the chasm now holding vegetation! Even a massive tree is now growing there.

My fondest memory of early WoW, was farming turtle meat in the Shimmering Flats in Thousand Needles.
It will be so nice to see these zones as they were.
That being said, my worst memory is the endless farming of Runecloth in Tyr's Hand...so maybe not.

Stonetalon Mountains in Kalimdor received a lot of changes as well didn't it? I don't remember the tauren camp with the elevator being there before Cata or any of the big Orc War forces either. Also this I am more fuzzy on but I don't believe the scorched vale area was there either.
