Welcome to Wowheads Smite Priest Leveling Guide. While most people think Shadow is the go-to spec for leveling, Smite is an incredibly competitive alternative all the way up until around level 42, and even remains viable after that. When leveling as Smite, your damage output will be comparable to Shadow, and your healing abilities will even be slightly enhanced. Therefore Smite is a great allrounder build that can do both solo leveling and dungeon leveling.
This guide covers specifics for leveling as
Smite Priest
. If you'd like to learn more general Priest leveling information, or how to level focusing on other talent trees from Priests, check out with the following guides:

Smite Priest Leveling Talents in WoW Classic
The main benefit of leveling using a Smite build are your enhanced healing capabilities for groups, as well as your powerful single-target damage combined with great sustain from
and
. You'll be just as quick at solo leveling as Shadow builds up until 42 with the added benefit of being more proficient at healing dungeons.
Level 10-19 Talents as Smite Priest
For all Priests alike, there is little choice at the start. At the early levels most of your damage will stem from wands, which are fairly easy to obtain, therefore picking up
right away will speed up your leveling by a lot.
is by far the best leveling talent, so it's the next talent you'll pick up. Try to play around it by staying outside of the five-second rule after combat ends to take advantage of the doubled spirit-based mana regeneration.
Level 20-41 Talents as Smite Priest
After covering your essential base talents, from here on you'll want to grab
as it'll bring down the resist chance of your
暗言术:痛
and
心灵震爆
down to 2% against mobs of the same level as you. As there's always an unavoidable 1% resist chance for spells, spending another point in the talent only provides half the value and isn't particularly worth it.
The next three points in
will make your shield a lot stronger, meaning you can kill mobs quicker due to not suffering from pushback for a longer time and it will effectively also make your
more efficient, since charges can't be lost while you are shielded.
is technically an alternative, but it provides absolutely no value unless you'd die without it, so you should only take it if you are doing dungeons very often.
is mainly taken to access
and
, both of which massively increase your sustain capabilities, but is also a fairly useful talent that allows you to gain pushback resistance occasionally.
in particular can be used for spellcasts towards the end of combat to leave the five-second rule earlier and boost your mana regeneration, which is extremely convenient.
After getting the regeneration talents, you will then spec into
and
, which directly increase your damage and healing potential by a decent amount. None of the three other talents you could spec into instead provide anywhere as much value, so these 10 points are very straightforward.
Finally,
is another great damage talent, but is only taken this late into the build as mobs generally wouldn't live long enough to take advantage of it in the earlier levels.
Level 42-60 Solo Leveling Talents as Smite Priest
If you wish to keep leveling on your own with the Smite spec, instead of respeccing Shadow or optimizing for dungeon healing with your remaining 19 talent points, your best bet is to pick up
next, as it can be useful for mobtagging in contested areas, bigger pulls and finishing off low HP enemies.
At this point your next few talents won't be extremely impactful for a while. You will want to grab
as a filler talent to then choose
,
and
respectively. They'll all increase your sustain by a sizeable amount, and more importantly, allow you to spend your next five points on
, which is your last great power spike.
There's not much you can do with your last two points, so I'd simply put them into
to suffer from less pushback when healing, though any other talent option is also perfectly viable at this point as you're only two levels away from your goal.
Level 42 is usually when Shadow starts to overtake Smite, so unless you absolutely want to stick to the Smite priest playstyle, you should probably swap at this point. Learn more in our Shadow Priest Leveling Guide.
Level 42-60 Dungeon Leveling Talents as Smite Priest
Although it might be slower than the other two options, if you want to stick to the Smite build and feel like you want to optimize for clearing dungeons instead of upgrading your damage, you can alternatively use your remaining talent points on additional healing talents.
Spend your next two points on
, as pushback resistance can be pretty significant when healing dungeons, and it helps you access the rest of the holy tree.
If you'd like to have it for DPS purposes, you can shift any point of the following three talents into
instead, though it's in no way necessary, it can be worth it if you find yourself unable to make use of the majority of your mana while grinding in dungeons.
Though it's most likely a bit overkill for the earlier dungeons,
is a powerful mitigation buff for your tank, so spending three points on it is worth it in any healing build.
Next, you can get
灼热之光
and
to increase your DPS and healing efficiency. Though the order in which you get them is mostly up to preference, more damage is likely the better first choice as you shouldn't be running out of mana very often at this point.
Afterwards, you will want to put your last nine points into
and
, which boost your healing potential by quite a bit. Keep in mind that the latter talent only affects the base healing of your healing spells, but at this point you shouldn't have much healing power, so it doesn't make a big difference in how good it is for you at this point.
Level 60 Talents in WoW Classic
Congratulations on reaching max level! At this point, you will likely want to respec your talents, as you will be focusing a lot more on Dungeon and Raid healing than on doing quests. For that, you can check out our Healing Priest Guide for suggestions of max level talent builds.

The Five-Second Rule (5SR) and Spirit for Priests in WoW Classic
In WoW Classic, there are two main sources of mana regen: Mana regeneration from MP5 (Mana per 5 seconds) effects found on items like
咆哮之牙
and regeneration from the Spirit stat. Regeneration from MP5 happens all the time, regardless of what you're doing. Mana regeneration from Spirit, however, normally only happens after you stay 5 seconds without casting a spell. This is what is called the Five-Second Rule, or 5SR.
The time starts after you finish the cast of a spell (or when you cast an instant-cast spell) that costs mana. From that moment on you won't regenerate any mana from your Spirit until you wait 5 seconds without finishing the cast of a spell. This rule makes most mana-user classes in WoW prefer MP5 over spirit since it offers them regeneration benefits while in-combat.
However, Priests have talents to both cheat the Five-Second and to gain other benefits from Spirit, being one of the few classes that like Spirit on gear. These talents come in shape of
, which allows 15% of Spirit Regen to continue while the 5SR is up, and
, which doubles your spirit and allows an extra 50% of your Spirit-based mana regeneration to continue inside the 5SR for 15 seconds after you get a killing blow.

*: The number of
惩击
and
心灵震爆
that you want to cast here depends on your enemy. If you can, try to kill enemies without using any, to conserve mana. Typically, you should be fine by taking half of your enemy HP with raw spells and the final half with the remaining duration of
暗言术:痛
and
射击
. However, this may change depending on how much of a threat the enemy is. For enemies that hit too strong, you may want to cast more
惩击
to finish it faster, while for enemies that attack too fast you don't want to cast spells if your
真言术:盾
is not up due to high spell pushback.

Spells to Buy while leveling as a Smite Priest in WoW Classic
This is a critical section to take the time to read because a common misconception is that you'll need to buy every single ability as you can train them when, in reality, you only need to purchase certain spells at certain levels. This path will save you a lot of travel time, as well as a lot of gold that can go toward buying your first mount at level 40. Priests have a wide variety of spells, some of which are unique to their race, because of this we will list only the spells that you want, why you want them, and what levels you can upgrade them at.
Priest Trainer Locations

Best Wands and Gear for Leveling a Smite Priest in WoW Classic
There are two primary sources of wands on a fresh server, enchanting and questing. Wands are essential for Priests at low levels, and as explained in the Priest Leveling Talents section,
is an important early talent pick, which can increase your Wand Damage up to 25%. Plus, wanding takes no mana, reducing downtime to drink.
When leveling, wand upgrades will be very impactful for Priests due to the sheer number of times you find yourself wanding mobs to conserve mana, thus, always having the best-possible wand can make your leveling experience much easier and faster.
For DPSing and questing in general, you'll be usually fine always going for Wands that have a higher DPS stat, so you can use that, as a rule, to see if a weapon is an upgrade or not.

Spirit > Intellect > Spell Power > Stamina
Spirit:
Your best leveling talent is
, and as such, you should play to your strengths. By stacking a lot of Spirit, you will reduce the amount of time you would spend drinking while leveling.
Intellect:
Increases your total Mana pool, as well as providing you with some spell crit.
Spell Power:
You probably won't come across many items with Spell Power while leveling but, it's worth noting that you should consider wearing any piece of Spell Power gear you come across.
Stamina:
Increases total health points.

Leveling Dungeons for Priests in Season of Mastery
While leveling in Classic, often you'll find quests for dungeons appropriate for your level. Classic doesn't have quality of life improvements like Dungeon finder or Group Finder, so players must use default chat channels like General or LookingForGroup to find groups for dungeons.

Bag Space in Season of Mastery
One aspect of Classic leveling that many players, especially retail players, often forget is bag space. Unlike when you start a new expansion, starting in Classic means you only have your default backpack available, with meager 14 items lots.
To ease that off, there are some bags that you can easily obtain at the start of the game:
亚麻包
- Created by Tailors. Requires
裁缝
skill level 45 and takes 6x
亚麻布
, obtained from Humanoid enemies, and 3x
粗线
, purchasable at
Tailoring supplies vendors
.
If you have the necessary materials, try asking in General Chat or Trade Chat if any Tailor could help you making that bag. If you find someone, make sure to tip them for their help!
棕色小袋
- Dropped by many different humanoid mobs and sold by
select vendors in early game
for around .
科多兽皮包
- Created by Leatherworkers. Requires
制皮
skill level 40 and is learned from
图样:科多兽皮包
, which is only sold by a Horde vendor. Alliance players may get this pattern by using the Neutral AH in Gadgetzan. Requires 3x
薄科多兽皮
, 4x
轻皮
, and 1x
粗线
.

Apparently I deleted my older comment? I don't recall doing so. Here's the original.
The guide states from the outset that Disc is a spec for those leveling in dungeons, yet it proceeds to suggest the Spirit Tap and Wand Specialization talents. These don't apply for dungeon-levelling Priests: you're going to be too busy dealing with overeager / otherwise misbehaving / inexperienced DPS (or, y'know, healing the tank) to use your wand or do any damage.
The guide additionally suggests combining PW:S with Greater Heal, yet the latter is only available at level 60--not useful for *leveling* Priests. I have much more success with PW:S and Heal, available much earlier. There's also no mention of Silent Resolve, which is essential for not taking aggro while healing the aforementioned DPS (if you're taking aggro from healing the tank, you're probably going to wipe regardless).
The guide suggests one thing and then provides a talent build that accommodates something completely different.
Another point I've noticed in a lot of guides is the obsession with saving money for mounts. I was able to afford my mount for my priest at level 25 or so with minimal farming, mostly fishing. This is while sending money to alts, using flightpaths (gasp!), and, horrors, buying every skill! Oh, the humanity! I do not, at all, understand how people who are serious about making money are unable to afford mounts at level 40, especially when I managed at *25*. Every single class guide I've read on this site cautions readers against buying every skill, saying they won't have enough money for a mount at 40. Yet I had the money at 25, with enough income to be comfortable buying the rest of my skills. And this is with just running dungeons and fishing. What is everyone spending their money on that affording a mount is so hard? The common misconception, in reality, seems to be that buying every skill will leave you utterly destitute, that you'll die penniless like Edgar Allan Poe. What game are these people playing? Were the economies drastically different in earlier phases? I've checked the AHs on other servers and they're better than where I'm playing. I seriously don't get it.
