Welcome to Wowhead's Class Overview Guide for Mage DPS in Season of Discovery! This guide will help you improve at your class and role, to give you suggestions and helpful tips, that way you will be better equipped to face new challenges in WoW Classic Season of Discovery.

What's New for Mage DPS
Mages in Season of Discovery get some amazing runes that completely change the way Mages will play in all PvE content. Typically in Classic Mages are delegated to a rather stale rotation early game with playing Frost and spamming

. Well those days are long gone. While Frost got a handful of new runes to add to their Frost toolkit like

and more, that's more of a PvP spec and now the meta has moved to playing Arcane or Fire.
Fire Mages were a powerhouse in Classic. Once you could leave the icy cold of the Frost build behind and finally start warming up with Fire, Mages became the premiere caster in any raid, with massive
s and hard hitting
s. Now with Season of Discovery you gain a few amazing runes to add to the already powerful Fire toolkit.
summons a huge trail of spellfire that will move towards the target, burning everything in it's path.
is one of the most iconic Mage spells from Wrath of the Lich King and further expansions. This is a massive DoT that after 12 seconds explodes for a ton of AoE damage. It will also explode if it gets dispelled, making it a powerful tool in PvP. The iconic
gives you an instant cast

everytime your non DoT's crit twice. Lastly
increases your crit chance with ALL spells by 15% and
increases the crit damage bonus by 50! All in all, Fire mage is looking very strong. The only thing that we need to worry about is our mana, since the level cap right now is only level 40 and Mages typically don't have too much Intellect that that level.
Arcane Mages existed in Classic, but more so you just take a lot of their talents in order to get it's powerful cooldowns

while casting Frost spells in the early game. The problem with Arcane at the time was that you didn't have a lot of options of Arcane spells to cast outside of

. Well, Season of Discovery brings some new spells for Arcane. The infamous
is now in Classic. A lot like the TBC/WOTLK version, except this version does not buff Arcane Blast, but buffs every other Arcane spell. This pairs extraordinarily well with the rune
, which gives a few of your spells, including
a chance to reduce the channel of your
by 50%, while also reducing the mana cost by 100%.
is another new unique Arcane spell that unleashes the rest of your mana in one big burst of Arcane energy and can do up to 300% more damage, based on how much mana you have when you cast it. After you cast it, you gain 300% mana regeneration. All in all, whichever spec of Mage you choose to play will be strong, and most importantly fun.
Scrolls for Mages
Outside of the new runes, Mages now have scrolls, which are used for runes, but also used to buff yourself and even give you the ability to resurrect with
. These scrolls are found all throughout Azeroth and an be identified using a
. Once identified they become buffs that you can use on yourself that last 30min and like
, which will resurrect a fallen friend, or
, which allows you to teleport to any party member, so long as you are both resting at an Inn or a City.

. There is three tiers of scrolls and you have to be LV 10 to use the first tier of scrolls, LV 20 to use the second tier and LV 40 to use the third tier. Once you identify a scroll, it will become one of the buffs from the tiers at random, with

Viability for Mage DPS
Mages are powerhouse when it comes to AoE, with some of the best single target damage in the game that only gets better when we get more gear and the fights get shorter.

You have a ton of runes that will help you do great damage as a Fire Mage and even some that can help heal like
if you really need it.
is a powerful DoT that blows up after it runs out and does a massive amount of AoE to everything around the target. Both

will give you more crit and make your crits do more damage.
is an amazing new runes that is cheap on mana and dips into both the fire and frost tree, making it able to benefit from both of the trees talents and
is a powerful cooldown that when used increases your spell casting speed by 20%.
Best Runes for Mage DPS
Which runes you use will depend on your spec.
,

are all around great runes whether your Arcane or Fire. Arcane obviously needs
as it will be your main spell to cast, while utilizing
procs to reset your stacks. Whereas Fire will be trying to keep
on the target at all times and utilizing the
procs.

is better and highly suggested to be used with both specs.
How to Play Mage DPS
The rotation for Fire is pretty simple. You goal is to keep five stacks of
up, keep
on the boss as often as you can, without clipping it, meaning make sure to let it expire and blow up before applying another one. Make sure you use your powerful cooldowns
and
and then fill with
until you need to reapply

in order to keep your
debuff up.

Stats and Gear for Mage DPS
Stat priority for Mages will change slightly throughout the phases. Spell Hit is always the most important stat, however you don't need to worry about it at all this phase because you have
as well as the Mage only scroll
, so you do not need to worry about acquiring any of the hit gear from the raid this phase. The spell Hit cap is 5%.
Early game at LV 50 Intellect is king. This will increase your mana and your critical strike chance. At the lower levels mana will be an issue due to not having too much Intellect in the game, so finding it any way you can will be vital.
1 Intellect is 15 mana
60 Intellect is 1% Increased Critical Strike
Spell damage is another very strong stat that follows closely behind the other two stats. Most of your gear will have Spell Power and Intellect on it.
Critical Strike Chance is the chance you have to crit. The more you crit, the more damage you do. This stat is one of your best stats as a Fire mage thanks to how
works.
Spirit will increase the rate at which your Health and Mana regenerate. This is much more helpful at the lower levels, then the later levels and you'll be looking to have some on your gear. A good portion of your gear will be Intellect and Spirit pieces as they go well together.
Stamina gives you more health. Mages don't need to stack Stamina, we just need to make sure we don't get one shot by mechanics.

Gear Recommendations for Mage DPS - Phase 3
Below is a list of some really strong gear that you can get. I won't list any raid gear, but rather gear that you can get outside the Raid.
is a great ring that you can easily obtain from the STV Bloodmoon event. This is one of your best in slot rings for this phase, so it's worth picking up.
is a still an
extremely
powerful helm that is only able to be crafted and used if you're a Tailor. While this is a Tailor item, you do need to go inside of Gnomer to do the questline for it. This has a ton of Spell Power and stats, but also a strong on use that gives you 50 Spell Power for 12 seconds on a ten minute cooldown.
is an amazing weapon that comes from

. It's a low drop rate, but luckily Mages can farm this solo with no help. This is best in slot and worth farming.

is once again Best in Slot for this phase, unless you're engineering, then you'd use
. Either way, both of these are acquirable and should be aimed to obtained as fast as possible.
Best Races for Mage DPS
Mages can choose between two different Races on the Alliance side: Gnomes and Humans.
Gnomes
Gnomes are the best race for Mages, the Gnome Racials are far too good.

is a racial ability that allows you to get out of ANY Immobilzation, roots, snares and slows. This can range from being

and just about everything that can hinder your movement. This is obviously insanely good in PvP and can be lifesaving as a tank or DPS. On a very short cast time of .5 sec and a very short cooldown of one minute, this is easily one of the best racials in the entire game.
Next up they have

. This is a flat out 5% increased Intellect. Intellect is great for casters since it increases your mana pool and your chance to crit with all your spells.
The last important racial Gnomes have is

which gives us an extra 15 to our Engineering skill. This normally wouldn’t be that big of deal, but in Season of Discovery, we can only get to 225 on our professions. This bonus brings you to 240. There isn't anything amazing you can make this phase, but this will be more helpful later.
Human
Humans are the only other option for Alliance Mages and they don’t bring anything to the table really. They have a PvP racial in
on a 3min cooldown, but that doesn’t help much, if at all in PvE. The increased Spirit from

is better than nothing and will slightly boost your mana regeneration, but it's not super helpful.

gives a 10% reputation gain bonus, however we don’t really have much rep to grind in Classic and lastly
gives us 5 increased skill with Swords and 2H swords, which does not matter at all for Mages.
Best Races for Mage DPS
Mages can choose between two different Races on the Horde side: Troll and Undead
Troll
The main reason for picking a Troll is
. This passive provides a substantial damage boost, especially when low on health. This doesn’t happen very often, however, as you are liable to die quickly if left on low health, especially in raids.

will give you some health regen, which can be nice since we want to stay as high on health as possible.

can be helpful when fighting Beasts, otherwise not that helpful.

Undead
Undead have

Undead also have another niche racial in

, which simply gives you some added Shadow resistance for those few encounters where it can be handy. Lastly they have

, which allows you to feast on any human or Undead corpses around you, healing you for 7% of your total Health. This is just a nice quick heal that can come in handly in between pulls, or trash packs, or while out leveling.
Best Professions for Mage DPS
You have a few options for viable professions in Phase 3, all of which bring some pretty helpful items.

is considered mandatory, however the other option is up to you.
Tailoring

is mandatory as it allows you to craft the extremely powerful Helm
that has a ton of Spell Power and stats, but also a strong on use that gives you 50 Spell Power for 12 seconds on a ten minute cooldown. Tailoring also allows you to craft
, which is another best in slot item. These are both bind on pickup and you MUST be Tailoring in order to craft this and it's highly suggested that you try and get this item as soon as possible.
Enchanting

allows you to use
, which gives you 20 Spell Power for 30 minutes.

. These are nice for both single target and AoE damage.
Best Consumables for Mage DPS
- This gives you 1% chance to crit with all your spells
- This gives you 1% chance to hit with all your spells.
- This gives you 8 mana every 5 sec.

- This is nice for Fire Mages, as it increases your Fire damage by 10.

- This increases your Spell Power by 35.

- This gives you 8 mana every 5 seconds.

- A buff from a quest in Blasted Lands. This gives you 25 Intellect.

- This is a weapon oil that increases your Spell Power by 16.

- The most common potion you end up using as a Mage. This gives you a nice chunk of mana, allowing you to cast more.

- This is helpful for emergencies when you need the instant Health.

- Health Regeneration is always good to help the healers out a little bit.

- Additional Health pool makes you much able to take more hits.

As I was also reading the healer mage page, I have learned from a comment that Deepdive Helmet
is quite out of question in first season because it requires a gnomish specialization! Hence it requires 30 lvl.

No consideration for frost dps'ing at this early level? I feel like the amount of talent points you can put in, the are better options in frost than in fire overall.
Looked at the talent tree last night just trying to think how I wanted to play..
Both specs would take the .5 second cast reduction on main spell and as you set up on the talents, the reduced resistance chance on enemies.
After that frost gets increased critical damage on ALL frost spells by 100%, and all frost damage by 6%.
Fire gets ignite for 40% extra damage on crits, pushback/threat reduction and a little extra range?

Am I wrong that Mages do not get Presence of Mind until level 30? My talent tree says I need 20 points in Arcane to choose it.

Critically missing info about the Arcane Surge rune/ability is the fact that it not only spends all your remaining mana, but also increases your mana regeneration by a huge amount. What this means:
It's perfectly viable in PvE because you get the spent mana back pretty fast
It's a great tool to use as essentially another Evocation

What about the mana per 5 stat? where does it rank in the stats priority?
For example should I equip emberstone staff or Lorekeeper's staff? (as a fire mage)

Since yesteraday, living flame no longer drops arcane blast stacks, because now it's considered as fire spell only. Use Icy Veins rune instead.

Correction to Arcane Rotation:
Living Flame on cooldown (does not benefit from Arcane Charges)
When you have clear casting, either use it on Arcane Missiles for Single Target or Arcane Explosion for Multiple Targets.
Found this to be a way better rotation with mana efficiency in mind.

60 Intellect is 1% Increased Critical Strike
This is true at level 60. But at 40, isn't this less? I thought I remember reading back in the day that there was some sort of weighted expected INT value by level. Blizzard never released the details by level. Regardless, stacking enough INT to make a difference in spell critical strike may not be optimal with level 25 & 40 itemization.
If it is a different value by level, I'd be curious if anyone has information at what the actual int per 1% crit is at for levels 25/40/50 for current and future reference.
