The opening of the Gates of Ahn'qiraj is the event preceding the availability of the Ahn'Qiraj raid instance. To open the Gates, each side must gather and contribute large numbers of specific resources to quest givers located in Ironforge (Alliance) or Orgrimmar (Horde) to fund the expedition to open these raid instances. But this isn't without reward.
In total, the Alliance on your server will need to gather the following to be able to open the Gates:

Why do the Opening of the Gates?
First, once you have helped your side complete all the opening goals, the Gates will open and there will be the Ten Hour War. Participants in this event who have completed the questline to earn the

mount, the only bug mount you can ride outside Ahn'Qiraj.
After this, the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj and the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj will be available for 20- and 40-man raiding fun!
Second, doing the farming quests is a great way to
earn a lot of city faction reputation to buy that sought-after cross-racial mount.
In fact, it's the best way in Classic to do this!
Even if you are high level and plan to farm mostly the highest level quests to maximize your commendation output, it pays to do as many of the lower level quests once, as the first time you do any of these quests you are awarded 10 commendations.
About the Farming Quests
Each of the three gathering professions (Herbalism, Mining, and Skinning) and each of three Secondary Professions (Cooking, Fishing, and First Aid) have farming quests associated with them. By turning in needed supplies to the quest givers, you contribute toward your side's access to the mighty instances of Ahn'Qiraj in Silithus and earn rewards at the same time.
Information about every farming quest for the Alliance is detailed below. This includes a direct link to that resource in the Classic farming guides, which contain more detailed farming information for that resource, including route maps.

yields 5 city rep per turn-in, which means when you have turned in 10, you will only have earned 50 rep. You will get 50% more by turning them in 10 at a time using

For the repeatable quests, commendations are awarded in batches of 1, 3, 5, 7 or 10, depending on the difficulty level. Whenever possible, do the quest that is the highest level for your skill and survivability.

Number of Turn-Ins Required Per Reputation Tier
Since no Alliance races start out at Neutral with the other city factions, you will only need to get through a maximum of 39,000 reputation points (Friendly 3000-6000, Honored 6001-12000, Revered 12,001-21,000). This is assuming you have earned no reputation with that city faction through "Alliance" faction quests that give rep to all factions and done no quests with that city faction to start. Likely you'll start out much further ahead.
For some reason, top-level skinning quests require only 10 items for Commendation turn-ins instead of 20, like every other type of turn-in. But here is an area where the Alliance has a disadvantage regarding the Horde: no Alliance skinning quest yields 10 points, unlike

While numerically, this is still better than having to farm 20 of the other objects, there are other disadvantages to farming Thick Leather for rep that Alliance characters are better off with the 20-point farms. See the section about Skinning Quests for a more thorough discussion on this issue.

One question you may have is about whether it's more efficient to turn in cloth directly to city quartermasters for quests like

The answer is simple: bandages are better.
The initial cloth donation quests yield 150 city rep instead of 75 rep for 10

Unlike the other farming quests, you only need to turn in 10 leather for a Commendation turn-in, instead of 20. However, the Alliance is hampered here in two ways.
First, there is no 10x Commendation turn-in quest for leather, so

at x7 commendations is the best you'll be able to do.
Second,

is a challenging thing to target because it overlaps either with

or

, meaning that there is no range of mobs you can hunt and skin that doesn't have the possibility of getting those leathers instead of

. You can narrow the range as much as possible to avoid the possibilities, but with the high degree of overlap, it's not as easy a leather farm as other types.

However, if you want to target Light Leather specifically, stay in the 11-20 skinnable mob range.

As stated before,

is tough because of the high level of overlap between

. You can skin Thick Leather from mobs from levels 36 and above, but it overlaps on all levels with the other types. This means you can get the other kind of leather instead of (very occasionally, in addition to) Thick Leather. Heavy Leather overlaps with Thick Leather until level 45 and overlaps with Rugged Leather from level 46 onward.
The best way to concentrate Thick Leather, then, is to stay as close to the middle range, where Heavy Leather is winding down and Rugged Leather is just starting to be a possibility. This means targeting mobs that are between 41-50, with 43-48 being the ideal range.
There are two zones where you can find the most skinnable mobs in this sweet-spot range: Tanaris and Feralas. Hinterlands is also good for this, but the mob density isn't as high.
