It's no secret that leveling in Classic WoW can take quite a while. Between having to go back to your class trainer to train your new abilities, not getting your mount until level 40, and the amount of time you spend traveling from quest to quest, it can be quite a journey.
How Long Does it Take to get to Level 60?
On average, most players will take around 12 days /played to hit level 60, so this guide is focused on things you can do to play more effectively and minimize some of your unnecessary down time. Leveling in Classic WoW is more of a journey and less of a sprint to max level, but trimming off some of the down time and going into it with a plan is definitely a good idea.
Quest Optimally
Questing in Classic WoW is very non-linear, so always be aware of what quests you have and plan out an optimal path to complete them in. Quest text can be a bit vague sometimes, so asking a friend for advice or checking WoWHead's Classic quest database are definitely good ideas. Typically, it is wise to complete every quest in your quest log before going back to town to turn them in because travel time is such a large time-sink while leveling.
Minimize Travel Time
A very large portion of your time spent leveling will just be spent running from place to place, minimizing travel time and
making the most
of travel time is
very
important. HP, mana, rage, and energy are all resources that you should always be trying to convert into XP, so as you're traveling you should make an effort to kill things on the move. Ignoring creatures as you travel while at full resources is not only a waste of XP, but also a waste of your spirit-based HP and mana regeneration and MP5.
Use Your Hearthstone
Typically, every time you arrive in a new zone to start leveling, you should set your Hearthstone at the local inn. Hearthstones have a 1 hour cooldown, so planning your questing excursions around your Hearthstone can save you
a lot
of time, considering how taxing travel time is. Hearthstones are a very valuable and often ignored resource, so remember to keep an eye on the cooldown! An unused Hearthstone is a wasted Hearthstone.
Make Some Gold
Because bank and inventory space is so limited while leveling, making a bank alt early on will save you a lot of headache. Dump all your BoE gear and useful profession items onto your bank alt while you keep leveling, then occasionally take a few moments to log over and list everything on the auction house all at once. Make sure you don't fall into the mistake of vendoring things that you could have sold to another player for increased profit, but remember, time is a resource!
Professions
Leveling professions while leveling up can be a lot of fun, but most professions do slow you down quite a bit. There's an argument to be made for Skinning, and possibly Herblore and Mining, but
definitely
avoid crafting professions because they cost
a lot
of gold as an initial investment to level up, and crafting takes
a lot
of time, during which you're essentially forced to AFK. A
MUST HAVE
for every class is First Aid, but as for the other 2 secondary professions, it's much more time efficient to wait until 60 to level Cooking and Fishing.
Plan for Your Level 40 Mount
At level 40 you can purchase your 60% movement speed mount for around 90g, and making sure you've gathered enough gold to purchase your mount the moment you hit 40 is
very important
. As you level, you should always be making prudent financial decisions - don't train abilities from your class trainer that aren't useful for leveling, don't waste money on overpriced auction house items, etc. and once you're in your 30's, making sure you have mount money should be one of your biggest concerns and priorities. Running is so slow, and most zones are so big, that not having your mount right at 40 might cost you several hours of gameplay if you come up a little short.
Dungeon Quests
Always be on the lookout for dungeon quests while leveling, and try not to run dungeons unless you have several quests stockpiled. As far as XP goes, dungeons have very low return on time investment when accounting for travel time and potential wipes and mishaps, but dungeon quests are typically worth
A LOT
of XP, so knocking several of them out in one run could potentially earn you more than an entire level worth of XP. Some dungeon quests have exceedingly long quest chains as prerequisites that involve a lot of travel, and these are generally not worth doing if you're concerned with leveling quickly, but some dungeons that
definitely
worth doing and full of easily acquirable and high-reward quests are:
Uldaman (41+)
Zul'Farrak (42+)
Mauradon (46+)
Blackrock Depths (52+)
Leveling Gear
Gearing and itemizing properly will definitely increase your leveling speed quite a bit, but I wouldn't recommend going too far out of your way to get a piece of gear, like farming Deadmines 7 times for an Emberstone Staff, for example. Will the reduction in leveling time from having the staff make up for the several hours you spent farming Deadmines? Very unlikely. That being said, for melee DPS, making sure you have a good weapon is crucial, so be on the lookout for quests weapons or BoE's that you can pick up. Another thing that may come as a surprise to some people is the value of Spirit for
every class
and
every spec
. Not only does Spirit increase out of combat mana regeneration, but it also increases out of combat health regeneration as well. Minimizing down time and using travel time to regenerate rather than taking time to drink/eat will increase your efficiency a ton, so don't shy away from items with Spirit on them.
Talents and Optimal Specs
There are very large leveling speed margins between specs, and picking the right one will save you
tons of time
. For example, if you're playing a hybrid class and plan on tanking or healing at 60, it is wise to level as a DPS spec instead. Even if you're a leveling as a Fury Warrior or as a Shadow Priest, you can still effectively tank or heal dungeons and groups quests without having to respec. In general, talents to keep an eye out for while working your way down your talent trees are:
Talents that increase movement speed
Talents that increase regeneration and decrease down time
Talents that provide hit or crit rating
Talents that increase resource pool capacity
Training Skills
Every 2 levels you will unlock new skills for each of your 3 talent specializations that you can train at your class trainer in a major city. However, it is unwise to go back to your trainer every 2 levels to train, because often times the new skills are unnecessary and not worth taking the time to go back to town to get. It is much better to go back less frequently and train more skills at once to cut down on travel time, so I recommend looking up your future skills on the WoWHead Classic database so you know in advance when you should go back and train. For example, rather than training at 22, 24, 26, 28, it might be more optimal to train at 22 and 28 only, depending on your class.

A good idea for a guide might be a list of all the dungeon quests for each dungeon and where to start the breadcrumbs for them

This really helps me prepare for Classic. The idea of a "Gold alt" is somethign I've never heard of before. Also the fact that I have to take so much time into saving gold for my mount.
Thanks a lot!

It will be a good idea to check WoWhead for 'breadcrumb' quests that lead you to a zone or are hidden within the zone. For example, There is a very long and valuable quest chain that starts in IF for Descolace on the Alliance side. In Elwyn Forest, there are two different quests that drop off mobs. Sometimes breadcrumb quests reward valuable items or high experience so they are definitely worth looking into.
