Welcome to Wowhead's Classic Herb farming guide, focusing on end-game herbs like Black Lotus, Mountain Silversage, Dreamfoil, Plaguebloom, and Icecap! In this guide, we will cover everything about the best places, mobs, and levels to farm all the herbs that require 150+ skill to pick, like the herbs needed for flasks such as Black Lotus, Mountain Silversage, Dreamfoil, Plaguebloom, and Icecap.

Herbalism Farming 1-150 in WoW Classic
Why Farm Herbs in Classic WoW?
Herbs are found in nearly every zone in Azeroth, as well as inside some dungeons. To gather herbs, you must learn the
Herbalism
skill as one of your two primary professions. No special tools are required.
Each herb has a level range that includes when you can start picking the herb, when you will get skill points, and where you have mastered this level and no longer get skill points.
Each herb has a type of terrain it prefers, Learning to identify where to find herbs -- not just by zone, but also by terrain -- will make farming a much more logical and satisfying experience. Some herbs piggyback on other herbs, and you only get it by picking the base herb. For example, you will sometimes get
雨燕草
in addition to
魔皇草
or
石南草
, but you will never get
雨燕草
on its own.
The other reason is that herbs are needed primarily for consumables -- items such as potions and flasks that you will use with short-term effects. Herbs are needed consistently, so they can be a good source of income. While most
Alchemists
are also Herbalists, especially at the higher levels when raiding comes into play, they may not have time to farm all the herbs required to outfit their raid team. Rogues also use herbs for other consumables. (There are some other items that use herbs, such as

for several Tailoring and Leatherworking items, but the most common usage is consumables).
It is possible to fail in Herbalism, but when you do, it simply means you didn't successfully pick the herb. The herb does not go away. Just try it again. It may take a few tries if you're right on the edge of the start level, but you can try as often as you need.
You can also find some Herbs for sale on vendors. Any vendors with anything herb-related in their title - Alchemy Supplies, Florist, Reagents, Potions, Lorekeepers -- should be checked for stray herbs for sale. This isn't enough to farm, but every little bit counts.
Notable Herbs for End-Game Recipes
Herbs are used in many consumables, but below we'll highlight the most important ones for flasks, powerful elixirs, and useful potions.

How to Use This Guide
Each herb will list Best Zones and Other Zones. Best Zones have the highest number of possible nodes for this herb, so you'll have more chance of finding it. Other Zones still have a good number of nodes, but not as many as the Best Zones.
Suggested route maps have been added for the best-populated zones, but feel free to create your own routes. Individual farming goals don't always coincide with preplanned routes, so it's better to learn what zones have the best density, how to locate your target herbs in the given terrain and create your own best routes. Plus, if everyone is running the same routes, nobody will get the best herbing experience!
Ren Recommends are handy tips and personal favorite spots for herb farming.
Herb Levels
Each herb has four level ranges to consider.
Start Level:
Lowest herbalism level where you can pick the herb, and 100% chance of skilling on success. Failure is possible the closer you are to this start level.
Yellow:
Failures end, still a good chance at skilling, but not 100%.
Green:
Becoming trivial; lower chance of skilling. The closer you get to End Level, the less chance of getting skill points. Best to move on to a higher level herb if you wish to gain skill.
End Level:
Mastered. No more skill or experience from picking this herb.

Terrain:
This is the terrain type this herb prefers.
Best Zones:
The most herb-rich zones for farming. Listed in order of node density.
Other Zones:
The second-tier zones with medium numbers of zones. Still decent herbing, and may work better with other goals. Listed in order of node density. Herbs may show up occasionally in unlisted zones, but not worth targeted farming.
Each herb lists the recipes which have that herb as a component, and the source of those recipes.
All vendor-purchased recipes are limited quantity unless otherwise specified.
This means that the vendor only has one up for sale at any given time, so you may need to wait for respawn if it is not available when you check.
Understanding what recipes an herb is used to make will help you judge the value of that herb. Difficult-to-find herbs as components of high-demand items will fetch the best prices. An herb that's rare but doesn't produce something that's in demand isn't going to be a good money-maker. Rarity alone is no guarantee of value. You can also make money on herbs used for high-turnover items such as healing potions or popular raid potions and flasks, even if the herbs themselves aren't that uncommon. A good herb farmer understands the entire scope of the market.

tends to grow in long strings in local abundance. Find a river or stream with one Liferoot, and all you have to do is follow it around to find more. They are easy to spot as they are right along the shoreline, although there may be pesky crocodiles to clear out while you're hunting them.
Stranglethorn Vale has Liferoot growing all along the river leading north and south out of Lake Nazferiti, then extending along the southern coastline south from Gubarashi Arena to just north of Booty Bay. Wetlands may arguably be a better camp, particularly if you're a bit high-level for the area. Starting at the river mouth east of Dun Algaz, run north and follow the river across the road and into the swamp for large numbers of Liferoot.
Arathi Highlands has nearly as many spawn, but they are divided among three spread-out pounds in the west, central, and eastern parts of the zone, south of the road. One is in Witherbark Village, and the local trolls will need to be dealt with for you to get much Liferoot.

This up-and-back route is straightforward: start either at the northernmost part of the river near Nesingwary's camp in the north or on the coast just north of Booty Bay. Follow the river and coastline, turn around, and return the same way. Be careful in the stretch of river south of Lake Nazferiti, as there are a few elite

This is mostly an up-and-back route, with one loop in the swamplands before going back along the river. You can go further into the swamp for more Liferoot, but it gets more scattered at this point. Be sure to visit

lives up to its name. It hides in similar-looking shrubs and bushes, making it nearly impossible to spot in certain conditions. You may need to zoom in on your minimap to focus on the exact spot where an elusive Fadeleaf is hiding. I've had to click around until I get the gear icon before I've found it.
Fadeleaf grows all over Arathi Highlands. In Swamp of Sorrows, it's found in the same areas as Blindweed, west of Sunken Temple, with more of it concentrated in the eastern 1/3 of the zone.

There are actually three small loop routes here, which can be strung together if one isn't producing enough for you. Be sure to keep an eye out for Goldthorn and Khadgar's Whisker in these areas as well.
Swamp of Sorrows:

The east end of Swamp of Sorrows is very good Fadeleaf territory, although the less open geography and color palette of the Swamp of Sorrows can make it hard to see. It's a good farm to combine with Blindweed, if your herbalism skill is high enough for both.

can be found on rocks and near the sides of hills, in the same range as you would find Earthroot in lower-level zones. If it appears in the middle of a field, chances are you'll find it clinging to a small rock. The pale color of Goldthorn can make it surprisingly difficult to find on similarly-colored rocks.
It's easier to say where Goldthorn isn't found in Stranglethorn than where it is. It's doesn't spawn in Guburashi Arena, and it's not as abundant north of Grom'gol Base Camp. Otherwise, the entire zone is one giant Goldthorn farm. The best areas are south of Grom'gol and the ogre camps.
Arathi Highlands was always my personal favorite place for Goldthorn; just follow the northern wall back and forth, from Thoradin's Wall to east of Hammerfall and back. Like in Stranglethorn, grows along the same route. Swamp of Sorrows is also an easy wall route, but the walls are also heavily populated with Draenei to the north and spiders in the south, so it's a less convenient camp unless you're combining it with Blindweed farming.
Goldthorn is used in a very large number of popular potions, so it is a valuable herb to farm.

This lower-zone loop route will also take you into range for Kingsblood, Liferoot, Khadgar's Whisker, and Fadeleaf (In fact, the same map is used for Khadgar's Whisker farming).
Arathi Highlands:

While part of this route is the traditional along-the-mountains route, much of the lower part seems to go through open hills. However, Arathi is littered with large rocks and stones jutting out through the fields, which is why part of the farming route seems to take an overland turn. It's also a good opportunity to find other open-field herbs such as Kingsblood, Fadeleaf, and Khadgar's Whisker while you're at it.
There are two possible turn-offs where the route veers into territory where not a lot of Goldthorn grows. You can shorten the route by heading straight north, or head due east to pick up the mountains and increase your chances of Goldthorn.

, is a plant good at hiding, although its spiky leaves make it a bit easier to spot. It also likes to get in under shrubs, particularly near the base of trees and stumps.
In Stranglethorn Vale, Khadgar's Whisker grows heavily around Lake Nazferiti, in the troll areas, Kurzen areas, ogre areas and north of Gubarashi Arena, but it's also spread all across the zone. In Arathi Highlands, the greatest concentrations are near the farm northwest of Refuge Point and the Witherbark village in the southeast.
With a healing potion, mana potion and intellect potion as part of its recipe base, Khadgar's Whisker is in steady demand.

only grows in Alterac Mountains, so there are no choices for alternate farming. This is a niche herb for niche items, so it isn't in as high demand as an herb used to make everyday items. Still, with few people farming it, and
冰霜之油
used in many other recipes, prices could be good on your server.
Ren Recommends: Wintersbite may be your primary reason for being in Alterac Mountains, but don't neglect the green areas of this map. The compact green areas are good for Fadeleaf, Goldthorn and Khadgar's Whisker, and the coastal area is a good Liferoot farm. It's a good place to go kill time/collect herbs while you're waiting for the Wintersbite to respawn.

Mostly, this will be a meander around the snowy areas outside the Ruins of Alterac. Wintersbite can be found in the snowy areas only, so if it's not white on the map, don't bother looking for Wintersbite. There are a few spawn inside the ruins, but with elites inside the ruins, it's most efficient to farm outside.
If you can manage it, it's worth taking one quick trip inside to visit

Tanaris has the most nodes but is also the most spread out. The only place it doesn't grow is in the bug areas, but the spawn is evenly spread out. Burning Steppes has fewer nodes, but it's much more compact.
Ren Recommends: Tanaris may be spread out, but it's bursting with good side hustles. The ogre camps are great

farms, and sometimes you'll find a spare Purple Lotus or two. If you're a skinner, there are tons of skinnable mobs, including Scorpids that can be farmed for

Best Farming Routes for Firebloom
Tanaris:

Tanaris is a bit challenging to get into a loop route, but if you combine it with searching for Purple Lotus, a good pattern presents itself. Firebloom is spread out all over across the entire zone, but you can also use this to create a loop route for Purple Lotus, which is spread out at several different ogre ruins throughout the zone.

Many prefer Blasted Lands Firebloom farming for its relatively compact nature since nearly half the zone is cut off with the elite Tainted Scar (there are a few nodes in there, but it's not worth looking, partly due to lack of spawn and partly due to many nasty elites). Most of the spawn will be found in the middle band of the zone, from just south of Nethergarde.

is a high-demand herb, partly due to the fact that 10% of the time, you'll get
野葡萄藤
as well, and partly to do with some of the items made with it. It will also be very important during the Gates of Ahn'qiraj event when both Alliance and Horde will be hunting for it for their commendation quests.
By far, Azshara is the best zone for
紫莲花
farming, with the large Ruins of El'darath in the center of the zone. The entire road leading up to El'darath, as well as the ruins themselves, are the richest source for
紫莲花
. There are spawns leading down as far south from the ruins as just south of the Forlorn Ridge. It's also a higher level, which might pose an issue. The ruins also have elite Naga which wander around, so you will need to exercise some caution.
The troll ruins in The Hinterlands have a chance to spawn Purple Lotus, but most of these are in Jinth'Alor, which is crawling with elites. Tanaris is a safer zone and can be combined easily with Firebloom farming (see Firebloom above).

The Ruins of El'darath should be scoured more than looped -- it's worth spending some time circulating through these expansive ruins before moving on to the rest of the loop. Be sure to pick up the quest

before starting off into this area; this questline is an experience bomb, so you might as well get something good out of doing it. Just be aware of the wandering elites in this area.
Many good high-end herbs also grow in this area, so it's worth going here at higher herbalism levels to make the most of all this area has to offer.

If you're just interested in Purple Lotus and not in Firebloom farming, here's a map showing the exact locations of all the spawn points for Purple Lotus, with dots in the path where Purple Lotus is not known to spawn. Otherwise, if you're combo farming, use the Tanaris Firebloom map above.
Farming Wildvine in Classic WoW
野葡萄藤
is one of those herbs that's only found when you pick Purple Lotus (about 10% chance on each gather).
It has another distinction in that it's an herb which is far more valuable to other professions than to Alchemy. It's only used in one potion, but it's used in to create some of the most desirable mid-level Tailoring items in the game. It's also used in several Leatherworking pieces, as well as a couple of Blacksmithing, Engineering, and Enchanting pieces.

, is surprisingly powerful and popular. Dungeon and raid tanks will run with Gift of Arthas to increase damage to targets, stacking with other damage debuffs. It doesn't sound like much when described, but it increases the damage for every person in the group. This can add up fast.
Western Plaguelands is the best source for Arthas' Tears. They grow evenly around the zone, with slightly better concentrations near (but not in) the farms. They're also found on Sorrow Hill, southeast of the Ruins of Andorhol.

Azshara and The Hinterlands are the best zones for farming Sungrass. Sungrass grows evenly distributed across the zone, so there is no one good place to look other than open ground.

camp, by far, is Swamp of Sorrows. It's nearly everywhere throughout the wetlands, primarily along the shores of the many little hillocks of land among the waterways. For concentrated Blindweed farming, there just isn't a better alternative. Un'goro Crater has some growing among the swampy areas in the north near the Tar Lords, but unless you just need to pick up a few, consider no camp other than Swamp of Sorrows.

is found only in areas with specific demon magics allow them to grow. In this case, it only appears in three areas in any abundance: Felwood, Blasted Lands, and Desolace. There are a few random spawns elsewhere, but these are the only places with concentrated growth.
Blasted Lands has a small concentration of Gromsblood around the rocky rim of the Dark Portal, and some spawn scattered throughout the zone. Desolace has one small concentration of Gromsblood right inside Mannaroc Coven. These smaller camps are only mentioned if you just needed a few Gromsblood and wanted to avoid the crowds.

There really is only one great zone for Gromsblood, and that's Felwood. It's a simple up-and-back route along with the demon camps on the western edge. Start in the most southern part of the zone, follow the western wall through the demon camps until you reach the road north of Jaedenar, and then follow the road north to Felpaw Village. Turn around and retrace your steps. This is the largest source of Gromsblood in the game.

Like most open-field plants, the distribution of Golden Sansam is spread out evenly across a zone, instead of concentrated in one spot. The most fruitful zones are Un'goro Crater and Azshara, with spawn all over the zone.
Ren Recommends: The maps for Golden Sansam and Dreamfoil are identical, as they both like the same terrain (open fields) and spawn in the same zones. It's really worth getting your herbalism level to 270 to be able to farm both.

is to high-level dungeons and raids like fuel is to a car: nobody's going anywhere without it. Dreamfoil is behind so many important potions, elixirs, and flasks that the high-level grind would come to a screeching halt if the herb disappeared from Azeroth.
Dreamfoil scatters all over zones, so there isn't any one good spot to look for them. They don't tend to grow right near the rocky edges, so it's best to make your loops away from mountains and keep to open fields as much as possible. It's a good herb to farm with

Mountain Silversage is found (where else?) in mountainous areas, with the unfortunate habit of growing high, requiring climbing to get to them. They're found in some of the same zones as Dreamfoil, but you use opposite tactics to find them. Follow the mountain edges to find Mountain Silversage, rather than looking in the open areas.

Best Zones for End-Game Herb Farming (150-300)
If you don't have specific herbs in mind and want to know the richest sources of herbs, here are the recommendations for 150-300 herbs. Zones were judged based on a points system for being the best and second-best recommended zones and overall variety.
20-30 Zones: Wetlands and Hillsbrad Foothills
Both have decent coverage of general herbs, with overlap between the lower-level herbs and the higher-level ones.

is primary for both zones. Wetlands is also a recommended primary camp for

; Hillsbrad is a recommended zone for

. Here, Wetlands has a slight upper hand, but Hillsbrad Foothills is a good second choice. Wetlands is an Alliance zone, and Hillsbrad is more Horde-friendly, which will also play a factor in making farming decisions.
30-40 Zones: Stranglethorn Vale and Arathi Highlands
Stranglethorn Vale has better coverage and herb density. However, it's also going to be a more highly-trafficked zone. Arathi Highlands scored within a point of Stranglethorn Vale, although the overall herb density is not as high. Both are good primary camps for

, and both have good quantities of

(Stranglethorn is a primary camp for this). Stranglethorn has the added benefit of having some

spawn and is a better zone for

40-50: Azshara and Hinterlands
Azshara is a 45-55 zone but is being counted in the 40-50 range for the purposes of this scale. It was the highest-scoring herbalism zone of ALL the zones, due to it being a primary camp for

, and
山鼠草
. These are all among the most highly desirable herbs in-game. The Hinterlands scored well and starts at a lower level, but it has the advantage of being one of only two locations where

50-60: Eastern Plaguelands and Un'goro Crater
Surprisingly, Eastern Plaguelands edged out Un'goro Crater as the best 50-60 zone, partly due to the presence of

Great guide, especially the Black Lotus locations - which are mostly accurate from the ones I've found.
Winterspring is missing the spawn right outside the blue dragonflight cave.
The timer on Lotus is now 45-75 minutes after picking.

If you are levelling herbalism as a level 60 character I would suggest that between skill 210-260 Go to the ruins in southeast Hinterlands. Ride past all the elites to the Purple Lotus nodes as there are so many and you can get the majority of them without killing elites. I also noted 3-4 ghost mushroom spawns up top in the cave.
I think it may be worthwhile to add in an instance section worth levelling herbalism and farming herbs.
I solo farm DM: East as a priest and can get a solid number of Gromsblood/Dreamfoil as well as Ghost Mushrooms. This is a reliable way to farm as nodes appear on instance reset and there is no world pvp/competition.
Not to mention Lashers drop random herbs as well.

There are definitely way more Jinxed Hoodoo Piles than that - we had at least 8 herbalists in our raid and some of them had a 2nd turn at looting the hoodoo piles to try to get the scythe.
