Why does Skai the Ruthless always take longer than it should?

I've been running Utgarde Pinnacle pretty regularly since the release of Wrath, and something that always seems to occur is the Skadi the Ruthless encounter dragging on for a lot longer than it should. Skadi is just not getting shot off his mount.

Why is this? Is it a common practice for @#$%ish players to hoard the harpoons in order to drag out the fight? Do people loot the harpoons and then just forget they have them? There have been times when I've actually have left during the Skadi fight because it had been going on for almost 10 minutes.

Usually I'm healing or tanking. I can't always grab the harpoons myself. We should at least be able to see who does loot the harpoons.

With the gear of current tanks "I'm healing" isn't a valid excuse, one HoT will do the job on most tanks after the first rush is cleared, some doesn't need healing at all.

You have to keep in mind that it takes forever for all 6 Harpooners to spawn. I don't think it's the DPS hoarding them - it's just the fact that only half of the waves of adds have a Harpooner in them, which means that process of acquisition can easily take as much as 4-5 minutes, while the boss fight itself - less than 40 seconds.

Easily this. I always loot and shoot the harpoons myself, but how fast I can do it is limited by how quickly the harpooners spawn and whether or not they're even killed quickly enough to shoot Skadi before his next pass.

There's one harpooner in the hallway leading up to the harpoon launchers, and the first pair of bad guys to spawn includes another harpooner. After that it alternates between warriors/witchdoctors and warriors/harpooners.

Since it takes five shots to down Skadi, you should only have to fight off seven waves before enough harpooners have been killed.

As I've said, usually I'm simply unable to loot the harpoons before someone else does, but they always get looted by some one. They just never get fired.

@Cross88: There is 2 harpooners near the harpoon launcher.

As a tank, I would always take charge when we got to the hallway before pulling. I'd look at my DPS meter, knock off anybody who obviously was new, and tell the lowest DPS from who was left, "X, you're on harpoons. Everybody else ignore them.".

Nine times out of ten, we got it done very quickly. The one time things seemed to drag on, I noticed the guy who was supposed to be shooting harpoons was firing them off as soon as he got them instead of waiting for the dragon to be there. Since it was mid-fight and I didn't have time to explain, I just quickly said "Y (top DPS) take over harpoons" and then kept tanking. We got the drake down, kicked the scrub, and finished the instance.

The moral? Take initiative, make sure people know what their roles are going into the fight, and things go quickly.

easy achievement here. Run down all the way down and killl all the bad guys that come out. have someone, i dont care who, but omeone collect 6 spears but DONT shoot them yet. Run all the way back and reset the gauntlet. now....Run out and run back down to the launchers. fire all 6 harpoons as soon as you can and down Skadi. if done right, it will get you "Lodi Dodi we loves the skadi"
