Block Value and Block Rating

Since I'm currently unable to get logged into the paladin forums on WoW maybe I can find an answer here. I'm not sure I understand the concept of block value and block rating. By simple guess block rating is the percentage that is blocked. What is block value, the amount of damage mitigated or? I'm still new to playing a serious tank, I've tried one before and loved it, but when I abandoned the server with that character I went Horde and did not have the option to go paladin until recently when I wanted something different from the usual pew pew of my hunter.

Block rating increases the chance to block and block value increases the damage absorbed by the block.

Read my tanking guide in the sticky for more tips on tanking, but the truth is that block value is useless for a paladin

Agreed, the only exception being trash tanking.

but its great for 5man tanking, since you have multiple mobs hitting for low damage, so block rating is the best mitigation for that
good, the only exception being hard hitting mobs/bosses

but in most cases, kierantk is correct
