So...the yellow glow has subsided, your guildmates have finished yelling "GRATZ", and now you have
no clue what to do now.
Level 70 is a complex thing. Many people, myself included, agree that it is when the game truly begins. While you have had talent points, from 1 to 69 you haven't been very specialized. At 70 you specialize into PvP or PvE, and into Healing, DPS, Tanking, or Utility. This guild shows you the steps to Karazhan, the first level of raiding. Once there, you should be able to get by on your own.
STEP 1: Level 70 InstancesThe first step to further progression are the level 70 wings of the instances you've come to know and love. The following lists them in order of difficulty.
- Sethekk Halls of Auchindoun: Actually a level 68 instance, Sethekk Halls is still a worthy challenge and a good place to get your feet wet. You will need to complete this to enter the Shadow Labyrinth.
- The Steamvault of Coilfang Reservoir : An extremely easy instance with a fun final boss. You will need to complete this to enter Karazhan.
- The Black Morass of the Caverns of Time: This is a very easy instance that may be done with a few under-70 players. However, it's drops are still high quality. This instance requires you to have completed Old Hillsbrad first. You will need to complete this to enter Karazhan.
- Shadow Labyrinth of Auchindoun: An instance of moderate difficulty, you should be prepared for some difficulties here. This is the only instance the yields Lower City reputation, so you may wish to run this rather often. Once you get to this point, I recommend you only run instances with your guildmates. Sethekk Halls must be completed by at least one member of your group to enter this area. You will need to complete the Shadow Labyrinth to enter Karazhan.
- The Shattered Halls of Hellfire Citadel: This place is mean. Not difficult, but it is cruel on a party. You will have quite some trouble with the trash, especially if you didn't follow my advice and went with a pickup group. Be alert at all times and bring lots of crowd control.
- The Mechanar of Tempest Keep: All instances in Tempest Keep require a flying mount. That alone should tell you that they will be hard. The Mechanar has some good loot, but the bosses require more strategy then you might be used to. Pick up groups are unacceptable at this point. This and the Botanica must be completed to access the Arcatraz.
- The Botanica of Tempest Keep: See above. The Botanica is identical in difficulty to the Mechanar. This and the Mechanar must be completed to access the Arcatraz.
- The Arcatraz of Tempest Keep: This is the second hardest 5-man instance in the game, and should always be done with proper preparation. If this is your first time, you may wish to bring buffing consumables, most of which are made by alchemists.
- Magister's Terrace: This has it's own section devoted to it, as it does not follow many of the rules other instances do.
STEP 2: Heroic InstancesHeroic mode is a setting the leader of a party can engage by right clicking on their character portrait. When on, a skull appears on the instance portal, and the instance is set for an above level 70 instance setting. E.g. It is harder than the instances above. To enter a heroic instance, you must have the key, which is sold by the dungeon's faction quartermaster, and requires honored, meaning you must do quests and the non-heroic versions enough to get to that point. Where normal dungeons drop blue items, heroic bosses drop epic items and gems. All heroic bosses drop Badges of Justice, which may be turned in for Tier 4 items in Shattrath and Tier 6 items on Quel'Danas.
FINALE: KarazhanWhen have a reasonably small amount of green equipment, and a couple epic items, you should consider yourself "Kara ready". The Karazhan page on WoWhead has a comment that lists what stats you should have before entering Karazhan. When raiding, you should have three buffs on you, that may be bought on the Auction House: An elixir of flask, a weapon coating or oil, and a well fed buff.
APPENDIX A: Magister's TerraceMagister's Terrace is an interesting instance. It has no wings, much less trash then average heroics, epic drops on normal mode, no blue drops on heroic, and is quite a bit harder than most instances. Magister's Terrace awards Shattered Sun Offensive reputation, and the daily quests on the Isle of Quel'Danas offer many consumables only useable in Magister's Terrace. Normal Magister's Terrace is as hard as low-level heroics, and Heroic Magister's Terrace is one of the most difficult experiences for 5-man groups.
