Funny. I go into Northrend expecting to level up my archaeology through both Nerubian and Vrykrul, and the first artifact I can find is this axe.

The axe is completely useless. It is outshined by anything else in Cataclysm and raid epics in WotLK. Until it gets a buff, I recommend dropping the Vrykruls the second you see it. If you want to (I'd definitely do it), skip Northrend completely. The dig sites are huge, the two newer races are rare as Trolls and NEs are mixed into the sites, and the only good rares are from the nerubians.

Ok, using this bad boy with my 71 rogue now that the level requirement dropped to 71 from 80. Absolutely outstanding weapon to level with. Seriously. Almost twice the raw DPS that any other weapon of that level has... and it has ilevel 226! That's higher than the Naxramas weapons and armor! I chop vrykul in half with their own ancestral weaponry. THE GLORIOUS BLOODSHED!

Now that they lowered the required level to 71, this item has become a lot better. It's actually worth getting the Archaeology BoA rare projects now, because they have shifted from "lame, you get better stuff from quests in BC/Wrath/Cata" to "damn, this is a very, very nice piece of gear for at least 7 levels!".

I farmed 2 of these for my Shaman and Warrior (Both were 70 and full brutal gladiator gear)

A great trinket for twinking a Shaman at this level is.

Few things to know.

Yes you can have 2 of these, by finding it on 2 different characters.
The axe seem to be bugged in the way that it will automatically stack if you loot them both. I sent them to one character and they would add up in one stack with a 2 like any other stackable item.
The annoying part with them stacking is that when you take them apart the one that "made the stack" will have lost all its durability.
Its possible that enchants might disappear aswell, but i cant confirm that.
Be careful, i suggest sending and equipping them one at a time

I found it with my lvl85 pally when it still needed lvl80. I thought it wouldn't be very useful for any class at that lvl, but I kept it just for fun.

When my worgen hunter turned lvl71, I saw he could use it. And the stats are great for him so I'm very happy I did keep it. According to Wowhead there is just one weapon that is better at this point. That would be Umbral Shiv (with two red gems), a low-droprate BOP zone-drop in Zul'Aman. And even though the total effect of all the stats might be slightly better, it is of much lower itemlevel.

I love to read that you CAN dual-whield these. This moves me to go and look for an other one.

CORRECTION:
Next to Umbral Shiv there are two other weapons better than this one at this time (for a lvl71 hunter). Hand of the Deceiver and Talon of the Tempest. These are bossdrops in Sunwell Plateau and Shadowmoon Valley. I missed them the first time because they are in catagory 'mainhand' weapons and not 'onehand'. They are also lowlvl, you need gems and then they are still just slightly better.

Can a character only obtain this once? Or can it be obtained multiple times with the same character? I'd like to dual wield these with several characters of mine, but I only have one Archaeologist character. Will I have to level a second archaeologist character to get a second one or can I keep milling vrykul artifacts on my main to get a second one?

for a slightly different comment (everyone knows this is basicly a legendary weapon with the right enchants from 71 until cata gear), This shares the same model of the old Wrath PvP weapons that airn't avalable, so after u r done using it on your agility/str users, feel free to use it as a transmog model.

EDIT: In Mists of Pandaria, slow off-hand weapons are viable for combat rogues, so the information below is no longer correct.

A heads-up for those leveling rogues: This is not a particularly good weapon for rogues to dual-wield. Most combat special attacks don't take the off-hand DPS into account, so it's really only good for the stats and the off-hand white damage, which isn't much. And with a slow weapon in the off-hand, deadly poison has a tendency to fall off if you don't monitor it closely and pool your energy so that you can shiv as necessary to refresh it.

At 71 I'm finding this to be at best no better in my off-hand than a level-138 questing green, and considerably worse if I accidentally let deadly poison fall off. This is a great main-hand weapon for a combat rogue, but don't bother digging up a second one unless you're planning on using it with some other character.

This has the same stats as Calamity's Grasp, a fist weapon from Kel'Thuzad in Naxx 25

Frankly, at level 71 these kinds of stats are ridiculous. I'm not complaining until it's used against me though

Tip for pvp fans: Dk, warrior and shaman.
Farm these axes, make a dk warrior or shaman level 70 twink. (maybe even rogue)
On level 70 team up with a good healer or a healer and a dps. (priest/mage)
Invite them to your team and tell them to not leave.
Then level 71 and equip the axes. (make sure you have some decent pvp gear too)
Win all them arena's by ease, get some nasty achievements. (hotter streak, 2200 with 2s or 3s.
This winning does require some skill from you and your teammates.
When satisfied just level your char to 85.

Finally got two of these for my 71 DK twink.

A bit of advise if you are doing the same. Its faster to get this at level 70 than it is at 85. At 85 all of Northrend is opened up instead of just Borean Tundra, Grizz Hills and The other one that im to lazy to look up atm. At 70 you will usually be digging up stuff that works towards this axe instead of 4 things spread all over Northrend.

Since nobody has mentioned and there'll likely be an influx of this question due to monks, you can't actually discover two of these on one character through discovery. You will need to have two separate characters with the required level to discover one each, then send it to your monk.

Good idea to pickup 2 of these if you intend on triyng to get server first 90 monk.
Heirlooms of the same level (71) sit at 97 dps and cap out at 120. Making huge gains up in this #$%^!

As for obtaining them, I found that you can only pick it up once reaching level 71 and are able to find dig sites in northrend. On my 70 twink I was farming it forever since he had archaeology, never showed up until I finally decided to level him. May have just been unlucky, but it's still something to take into account. As others have mentioned you also can only pick this item up once from a character.
So I'd assume you get one on your main, then the next from an alt (level 71 dwarf dk preferably) since all your digsites will be split between fjord and tundra and it's the quickest class to get to that level.
