If you have yet to get the 2-set bonus, I would recommend working on that first as my pally has it and it is a great dps boost.
if you really wanted to upgrade your belt, have you considered the mail piece available with your frost badges? If you have maintained a strict regiment of plate equipment pieces you can probably get away with going for the mail belt "Band of the Night Raven" instead of the Malevolent Girdle. The DPS difference between the two is quite substantial and you only lose about 600 armor points between the two.

I am a bit confused why the dps would be better for the mail one. I am a JC, so i will include my bold dragonseye in my stats; this is what I came up with.

Band of the Night Raven
Total AP: 309 (161 +20 str +20 str +34 str) (only room for one more dragonseye gem)
Agility adds roughly 2% crit more than Malevolent (52.08 agility + 1% crit melee)
+ the bonus intelligence (63)
-13 Hit
-3 Crit

Malevolent
Total AP: 390 (121 Str =242 AP + 20 str +20 str +34 str)
+3 Crit
+13 Hit
+Armor
The only negative that I am seeing is the approx. 2% to crit from the bonus in agility

So in conclusion, you are saying that this is a "quite substantial increase in dps", but how? You are losing 81 AP to gain about 2% crit. I see the Malevolent being the better option here, but maybe I'm wrong. If so, can you show me (without linking something from Rawr or any other website)? It seems to me that that is a huge increase in AP compared to 2% crit (actually a little less). Your thoughts?

I use RAWR and it looks like when I saw the difference in DPS it was pre-patch, so I updated the item stats for the Malevolent Girdle and found that the gap has now narrowed but there is still a marginal DPS gain in favor of the BofNR.

Whether or not that difference now outweighs the loss in armor I will leave up to you to decide for yourself as everyone has different playing styles and you should always tailor your gear to benefit your overall play and survivability. I raid with an aggro hog of a warrior ( I even have a HoS macro for built for him) so I am always on the lower end of the scale for taking damage. As a result, I don't mind equipping mail items that have favorable DPS stats over armor.

Not sure if I can meet your request to provide you proof without linking another website or source, as RAWR already does a great job with their DPS algorithm and collecting the fight data to produce DPS numbers for each item, however consider this argument.

81 AP translates into a ~5. 8 physical DPS gain, ie melee, CS, DS where as the 2% Crit gain (granting you a 100% damage bonus) will impact both physical as well your holy damage, ie judgments, exo, etc

The real question you should consider is would you prefer a steady 5.79 DPS increase on the physical attacks in your rotation vs that of the 2% Crit gain and bonus damage you will deal out on all your attacks in your rotation from BofNR.

(Assuming of course your hit capped and have decent raiding gear already, as I did mention that the 2-set bonus should be your focus first, trust me the 40% extra DS proc is well worth it, I have been on some ICC fights where I was able to instant cast DS three times in a row!)

The very nature of crit and how it procs produces very spiky DPS output, the actual DPS gain will vary based what items you have now, the boss level and your positioning, but a 2% chance to proc 100% extra dmg during a boss encounter is very attractive ( I am going to assume your raiding). In a short fight, there would be no visible benefit, however against DBSaurfang or Prof P where it would count, might be the added DPS that puts your raid over the top.

As it is a belt, yes, you can. I have the Eternal Belt Buckle and Frag Belt on mine. And three Bold Dragon's Eyes. Truly, my girdle be all kinds of malevolent.

I'm a Jeweler and Engineer, and I purchased the buckle from the Auction House.
