Blizzard should really get some things about moonkin gameplay straight. It's a nice idol sure, but how many moonkins use Moonfire regularly in PvE? Insect Swarm is WAY more mana efficient, not to mention you can avoid threat from nasty MF crits. But if Blizz wants us to spam moonfire...

Moonfire is our highest DPS spell. You should be using it as a standard part of your rotation unless you are without a shadow priest and having trouble with mana in a long fight.
There has to be a hidden cooldown, but it can't be that long. This idol has to proc at least 33% of the time for it to be as good as the non-epic Starfire idol, and that means the hidden cooldown has to be less than 40 seconds. My guess is the hidden cooldown is around 20 seconds.

Spell damage AND healing, and it's not on a trinket. I am not a moonkin druid, so perhaps my experience and views on them aren't accurate.
This does seem like it might help out resto spec druids who grind alot more, when combined with the +damage boost that healing gear is getting.
Not that it doesn't seem bad for moonkin either, if you are tabbing through multiple targets to moonfire (more likely in PVP.) It's an extra boost in addition to trinkets.
Does anyone know if you can trigger this using rank 1 moonfire?

I came accross a macro which allows you to change Idols during cast.
The macro goes:
#show Wrath
/cast Wrath
/equip Idol of the Avenger
This allows me to eqiup the Idol while casting Wrath, and thus to enjoy the Idol's benefits if I have to switch between Wrath and Starfire.
My question is, if I use the same macro on this Idol, will it still proc, or will the cast come before the equip, as it's an instant cast, and thus the Idol will never proc?

How does this compare to the Idol of the Raven Godess?

According to Hortus, the same chance to proc from lower ranked Moonfire is a bug.
Also getting a cooldown in 2.3.2
* Idol of the Unseen Moon: This item now has a 30 second cooldown on being triggered.

Well, I already thought this Idol was quite overpowered. 140 spell damage that is like 60-70% always on it's a lot. Now it will be more like 30-40dmg overall, so it's still better than the blue idols. The best it's that affects not only one spell, but everyone, even healing ones. Because the one you will always use it's the classic Moonfire.

/cast moonfire
/equip idol of the unseen moon
seriously.. it makes my gcd longer than normal... how do u make it without effecting gcd or is it even possible?

A "better" macro includes an already-equipped check in it:
#showtooltip Moonfire
/cast Moonfire
/equip Idol of the Unseen Moon
Use the same logic for Starfire also. Think of it this way: the game engine takes each macro as an atomic unit, meaning the granularity of command execution in a macro is global (all are evaluated at once). This would explain why you cannot macro two instant-cast spells such as IS and MF in the same macro. Thus the equip of the idol and the start of the spell cast "kinda" happen simultaneously. This means you DO get the benefit of that idol for that particular spell cast. Yes, even if it is an "instant" spell...
If you equip the idol and then cast the spell on the next line the cooldown of the idol equip is triggered. I think doing the cast then equip is taking advantage of a bug in the parsing engine but...meh...

Also, as a side note, be careful when you time your casts with e.g. Quartz. If your timing sucks, or there is a nasty lag spike, these macros can incur a 2xGCD, i.e. "Spell is not ready yet", but still the idol is switched, causing the double GCD.
Otherwise these macros are ideal to a moonkin, and should be used always.

The cooldown on this is being removed in 2.4

A note on idol switching macros:
It appears that this CAN cause a casting delay if you try to cast 2 different spells in succession if you try to cast the second spell before the global cooldown has finished on the first. For instance, if you cast Moonfire once and then try to cast Wrath before the global cooldown for moonfire has finished, you will get a the "spell is not ready" message. My guess is that this practice incurs an extra global cooldown because the idol gets equipped but the spell doesn't get cast. If you time your spells properly, then you don't get this problem, but if you are a button masher then idol switching macros may not be for you.

As of patch 2.4, the 30 second hidden cooldown will be removed.

With 2.4, this idol not only has its 30 second cooldown removed, but is also able to be triggered using Rank 1 Moonfire again. This means that for Restoration Druids this idol can be used to gain the buff by using the cheap Rank 1 Moonfire on enemies, which would provide a better healing bonus than that of the Emerald Queen idol, although it'd still require an additional global cooldown to activate.

Personally I love this idol,
however I don't usually switch it in normal/heroic instances as I am mostly using wrath there and a crit may result in me using 0.5sec gcd because of the equip, which is a bigger los off dps imo.
However I do use it in raidinstances and on longer bosses where I have to switch to starfire because of the mana-efficiency. I don't really like the /cast moonfire /equip idol of the unseen moon macro's because if you have a bit of lag you might end up prolonging your gcd, which is a loss of dps. Personally I use mf, 3xSF, mf... as rotation and I like to start out with the idol of the unseen moon equipped then equip the starfire idol on the first starfire and the moonfire idol on the last starfire.
(I use the following macro:
#showtooltip Starfire
/cast Starfire
/equip Idol of the Unseen Moon; Ivory Idol of the Moongoddess )
lets presume the moonfire idol has a 50% proc-chance then it would be +70dmg on the first 2 starfires and possibly (if you get 2 or more crits in the first 3 spells) 70 on the 3rd one as well, tho I'm not going to take this into account. You will however lose 55 damage on the last starfire. This will result in: 55*2+70*2= +250 damage, instead of 55*30= +165 damage. So I think it's worth swapping idols if you're using this rotation :)
PS: feel free to correct me if my maths are off somewhere :)

I suggest following macros for best use with this idol:
The macro below will first equip the Idol of the Raven Goddess (aswell as use the Icon of the Silver Crescent) and then cast Wrath, no global cooldowns!
#show Wrath
/use Icon of the Silver Crescent
/equip Idol of the Raven Goddess
/cast Wrath
The macro below will first equip the Idol of the Unseen Moon and then cast Moonfire, no global cooldowns!
#show Moonfire
/Equip Idol of the Unseen Moon
/Cast Moonfire
Looks perfect to me, didn't test it in raid yet though.

With 2.4.3 there is a GDC when you swap out equipment now. So using MF/Idol then swapping to wrath or starfire idol is going to kind of hurt DPS I would think. Unless anyone has tried it and found it doesn't.

Idol swapping will interrupt spell casts now, but you obviously can't interrupt an instant cast.
Bare bones here:
/cast Moonfire
/equip Idol of the Unseen Moon
/cast Insect Swarm
/equip Idol of the Raven Goddess (or your Wrath/SF specific idol)
begin your SF/Wrath spammage. Rinse and repeat.

With 3.0 and the Inscription profession, this Idol is not longer useful. Most raiding moonkins will be using

, and therefore will not be re-applying moonfire during encounters.

From 3.2 patch notes
Items with Triggered Effects: These items generally have cooldowns on how often they can be triggered. Those cooldowns are now triggered each time the item is equipped (example: A trinket has a 45-second cooldown on an effect triggered by player attacks; when a player equips that item, the effect will be unable to be triggered for the first 45 seconds it is worn).
Just fyi if you are planning macro'd idol swapping.

after all the discussion above, what of now? patch 3.2?
does it still have NO cooldown?
still have 50% proc chance?
I'm leveling my druid, so before getting any level 80 idols, I want to make sure if it is still worth it to take this idol.
thank you.

If they make it a one in 30 second proc it's ok because it almost always procs everytime you use moonfire. It adds 140 spell damage right now and it never goes off if you use moonfire. I'm sure that was not blizzards intent to give you 140 spell power with one item, wands don't give 140 spell power that would be insane. With the 30 second proc it'll last 10 sec every 30 seconds which is still 1/3 of the time. How it was intended. Awesome idol.

You can use every single different Idol for every single different spell you cast without causing any sort of GCD delay.
#showtooltip Moonfire
/cast moonfire
/equip Idol of the Unseen Moon
#showtooltip Starfire
/cast Starfire
/equip Ivory Idol of the Moongoddess
#showtooltip Wrath
/cast Wrath
/equip Idol of the Avenger
Copy and Paste these macros for pve moonkin pwnage.
Even with the inc nerf to the Idol of the Unseen Moon these macros still provide a nice dps boost.
When the Idol of the Unseen Moon does proc and then you cast a starfire/wrath afterwards you get the bonus from the proc and the bonus from the starfire/wrath idol.
Note: If you are out of range of your target and press the macro it will incur a GCD without casting the spell so I do not use these for pvp
I would also recommend an addon called "Quartz" for monitoring your spell casts / GCD's and latency

there has been a spate of people saying that with the upcoming nerf this will be worse than the blue starfire idol, all i have to say is WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG
this affects damage on every spell in your rotation. if you are just spamming starfire without ever tagging mobs with your dots then you are shooting your dps in the foot. anything that affects the damage of all your spells is a whole lot better than something that only affects one.

The best 20 badges I have ever spent ! It procs about one in 5 moonfires and lasts enough time to put in some serious damage. It doesn't share cooldown with trinkets so you can pop one as soon as it procs and smackdaddy
