Stranglethorn Vale is a great place to find this. You'll never find anything lower, and the occasional Mithril Ore too. Always look near cliffs or ledges, it comes with Heavy Stones which are great for leveling Blacksmithing from around 180-225.

I was mining for 20 mins in arathi, always near the mountains and caves, these are my results :

ONE run around the edges of a post-Cataclysm (nearly empty) Feralas gave me:

Iron Ore x 213
Gold Ore x 17
Silver Ore x 5
Mithril Ore x 2

After I finished the loop I flew around a bit and almost all the nodes had re-spawned, making Feralas an ideal zone to farm Iron Ore.

Feralas is Iron Ore kingdom, if you are a higher lvl with a flying mount please dont make the same mistake as i did, all the veins are down below were the ground mounts can reach them, up on the rocky spikes are none.

I spent an hour cycling through and around the crystalvein mine in Stranglethorn and picked up 12 stacks of iron ore, but also hit 2 gold nodes and 1 silver. As a lvl 33 Pally it seemed to work out well for me at around 12 minutes per pass through giving them time to respawn.

It only took 1 and a half loops around the outter edges of Feralas to completely fill a 32 slot mining bag. Total time spent there was around 30 minutes or so with 310% mount. It was mostly iron and heavy stone with partial stacks of Mithril, gold, and silver.

Gatherer still says it requires 125 mining to grab iron ore, but it doesn't anymore. I was mining it with a skill of 110.

I did Western/Eastern Plaguelands for Iron. They should be combined in a loop for max ore, so the next time you loop around, more respawns are back. I'd show you the path, but the Gatherer addon makes it dead obvious, so if you aren't using it, you are wrong. Don't be wrong. Anyways, the stats:

Iron Ore: 128
Heavy Stone: 141
Gold Ore: 22
Mithril Ore: 62
Solid Stone: 77

Not super impressive, but it was done FAST! The loop is pretty much perfect, and you can go non-stop for as long as you please.

I find, for running, not flying, its Feralis. Fly into camp ataya and run upper portion. ( twin colossalas, jademir lake ).
It all respawns so you can just run, run, run till you get what you need.
By onerios, there is a pvp camp, so watch for it. Not hard to skirt, so just beware and no worries.

I definitely found the most Iron Deposits in Feralas, I also found some in Desolace but not much. I recommend Feralas over Desolace for farming Iron Ore. When you mine Iron Deposits you also get Heavy Stone, this can be used to make things in Jewelcrafting and Blacksmithing. To prospect Iron Ore requires at least 125 Jewelcrafting skill.

A tour of Feralas got me the following:

203 iron
239 heavy stone
11 gold
8 silver
4 jade
1 lesser moonstone
1 citrine

That's without any guild buff, no respawns, no going in caves, just flying over the area and getting what came up, nice and easy :) Also, most of it was away from mobs, so I didn't have to fight for it. Just my two cents...

Eastern Plaguelands

If you are a 'twinked' toon trying to level mining for the buff and you don't want to have to buy all your ore from the AH, head over to Eastern Plaguelands. Take the river out of Hillsbrad and farm around that lake that the river connects too. It's the lake outside Strath.

In 20 min I have six stacks of iron and they are spawning faster than I can run around. My level 25 hunter can farm for days (and my other twinks have) and not be bothered by the level 42s just on the other side of the hill.

No mobs.
Fast spawns.
Two gold spawns.

I only wish mithril was as easy to get without having to spend 20 seconds fighting skull mobs!

If you're leveling up your mining from 100 to 150, Western Plaguelands is the place

15 minutes, 50 skill point, 1 round and a half and i gathered :
151 Iron ore
165 Heavy stone
18 Gold ore
5 Jade
4 Lesser moonstone
2 Citrine
1 Aquamarine

Then, if you're Alliance, you just have to HS back to Sw, see your trainer and go to Burning Steppes for the next 50 skill points.

i guess the best place is arathi highland.
if you make one round on the borderhills in arathi and no other one is farming, you can get 20 - 30 ore in 20 min.
i recommend lvl 40 and mount to avoid mob attacks.

I've found that:

Dun Morogh = Copper (the mine to the East with trolls)
Wetlands (mtn regions, east)= Tin / Iron (5 iron to 30ish tin)
STV / Alterec / Alrathi = Iron

More as I find more, I just mined a crap load to get my blacksmith from 1 to 180 in 2 days and those are the places I found the quickest respawn rates on ore deposits.

No, guys seriously listen here, Arathi Highlands is the BEST place for Iron and Tin ore. The best thing is there are 2 caves you can go into and after you make a circle around the map there us Hammerfall there to meet you so you can just mail your full inventory to a mule character and circle the whole map agen and come back with a full inventory and mail agen. Really Arathi Highlands, is the place to go for Iron and Tin. There is ALOT more iron there than, 1kneedles and Decolace. Oh yea and the occasional Mithril spot. great place for lvling mining.

If you character is lower level (until 30), then one of the best places I have fuond for farming iron is Duskwood. From Darkshire flight path head dirctly north then northwest then north again. There are several frequently respawning depoists of Iron there with the occational Gold. From there head directly south (SW of Darkshire) to the little "spider valley." Here you will find several tin viens, the occational iron/silver deposit and several copper deposits. From here you can swing south and then west all the way to the SW corner of Duskwood...hitting no fewer then 20 copper veins, 10 iron veins, and about 15 tin veins. I leveled my toon from 21 to 30 here and brought mining to 218 all in a few short days. This place is not hevily farmed AT ALL. Great for the lower level toon.

All the farmers go to Arathi for their Iron. Stuff sells better than thorium sometimes.

Did two laps around the zone today for my blacksmith, netted 75 iron, 25 tin, 15 silver, 14 gold, and 26 mithril.

Not bad, not bad at all. But you gotta be in on an off-hour else there is usually competition.

I found lots of iron deposits in Arathi Highlands.
just go inside the Boulderfist Hall caves or you can find some along the hills in Witherbark village.

Selling iron bars is a good way to make money. 20 iron bars sell for about 5g in AH.

Im a 60 warrior on quel thalas (darkdavid)and i just started mining, ive found that the best place by FAR is arathi highlands the hotspots there are in boulderfist hall caves, in a cave Neast behind hammerfall where u can mine bloodstones too and at the baulderfist outpost

Arathi highlands is a very good place. 150 iron ore, 20 gold ore, 5 truesilver, 10 silver ore, and like 40 tin, from 3 hours of farming. there is a kobold cave east of hammerfall. also check behind the alliance place, because theres a few respawns there

I found lots of iron ore in badlands, in the middle and lots of at the mountains while leveling.
Got like 40 iron ores when leveled 2 lvls there.

this is what i do. i have the FP for arathi and fly there. im alliance but on my server all the horde at my lvl are in STV and western badlands. so anywhey i run around the edges of arathi, ganking the elementals i find along the way as their elements sell ok too. get to hammerfall and stay out of sight of the guards.kill all the mobs and make my way back to refugee point. i smelt half of it into bars that go to AH and half that go in my bank for my engeneering. when im fealing in the mood to kill some horde ill go to badlandsand farm the iron/mithral there. ill go to where the rock elementals are so that i achive 2 things. 1.) lvling and 2.) getting money.

in 3 days i had the money for my mount. too bad was 2 when i got my mount :(

I would suggest going to Arathi Highlands for iron. Not only do they have iron, but tin, silver, gold and mithryl. I am a 375 miner, just dumped skinning and lvling BS, Arathi seems a good place to get those said ores.

I got 25 Iron Ores in 15 minutes in STV, in the Mosh'ogg Cave and the Crystalvein one, pretty nice, going to Arathi now to try the mining there and see if it's better... :D

About the fact that not everywhere there is ore labeled appers in the game.
The locations are Probable locations for it. That means everytime an ore vein is mined out it will respawn on some of the locations but not all at the same time.

Arathi is definetly the best place to go for iron ore. Obtained about 98 Iron, 14 Gold, 6 Silver, and 25 Tin, in about 2 hours. Dont forget to look in Bolderfist Hall, Bolderfist Outpost and the Drywhisker Gorge for extras along the way. And the Lake at Whiterbark Village normally has a few. Happy huntings :D

I find the best place to farm iron ore is Arathi. However, if you also want Mithril and Truesilver, I suggest Alterac. Sometimes Alterac is overfarmed, but you can just go to Arathi and come back to Alterac later. As said before, do not forget to check the caves-they have a lot of iron as well.

After exactly one hour of mining in Arathi Highlands (epic mount, lvl 70) I have the following:

79 Iron Ore
28 Tin Ore
14 Mithril Ore
6 Silver Ore
3 Gold Ore
67 Heavy Stone
20 Coarse Stone
10 Solid Stone
2 Jade
1 Lesser Moonstone
1 Moss Agate

No breaks, light activity in the area. Ran across a handful of players doing quests and they were taking some nodes...but not many.

Don't miss caves! They are the best source of mining nodes in a concentrated place.

well, something must have changed recently, like maybe blizz lowered how much ore deposits are in each spot, because for the last 3 days, a couple times a day i will come on and circle the edge of arathi, and only find 3 iron deposits, then ill go through the whole middle, and only find like 2, at this rate it will take months to get past iron in BS =/

Nobody has ever been to hillsbrad? Kill some 37 ogres and you have a S%^&load; of iron. 2 hours borught me 143 iron ore, 6 lesser moonstones, 4 citrine, 12 mithril, and a blue BoE. Hillsbrad is awesome (in the mountains, near tarren mill).

For a 70 paladin, I got abour 70 Iron ores in about 45 minutes. Everyone else here is saying that they got 50-70 in an hour, so Alterac Mountains seems like a better place to go to me IMO... Just go between the two caves in the snowy part, and around the mountains while you wait for the caves to respawn. usually, there were 2 mines per cave too. I also got around 25 Mithril, 5 Gold, 3 Silver, and 10 tin.

If you are on a pvp server and don't want to deal with the Arathi Highlands, then Desolace is where you want to go for iron. Just like it's name suggests there is hardly anyone there so you have the run of the place, and there is lots of iron.

Neither George Candarte or Laer Stepperunner sell Iron Ore. Someone probably mined the ore close to these vendors and sold it to them.

If you ride around the borders of Arathi Highlands, there is a lot of iron veins. I myself go there when I need the iron ore, and I mine ALOT

You can mine and smelt Iron with skill level 125. I believe you have to be level 25 at least. I was 27 when I hit mining 125 and got it.

This entry is broken. Where is the link to the actual mining node list to show which maps have the best iron nodes? I see drop rates for mobs.

i think you need level 125 mining to mine iron. im not 100% sure as its been a while since i started to mine iron.

and i think stonetalon moutains is good - it has an abundant amount of copper, tin and silver and a moderate amount of iron.

I find the best way to farm this to be the following:

- Go to Arathi Highlands and visit the caves.
- Start at the kobold cave by Hammerfall.
- Move to the Witherbark Cave.
- Then the ogre cave at 54,76.
- Then the other ogre cave by Refuge Pointe.

Then start again. Each cycle is enough time for Iron Deposit respawns.

You will also find Mithril, Gold and Silver very often and Truesilver from time to time.

As of 2/5/2026, Retail, The War Within, the best zone for Iron is Eastern Plaguelands. I have tried all other zones and none yield as much as a single loop. Even Arathi didn't have as much as Eastern Plaguelands. Happy Mining!
