In the Current Wrath Build this is now a Taunt effect. Hopefully it does not change because as of right now it would be immensely helpful in trapping and helping tanks out. MD + This spell. (Provided that the tank gets the threat and not you)

Just wanted to correct your wording... Distracting Shot does not technically "taunt" the target, it just forces it to attack you for a period of time (like Mocking Blow). The difference is that a taunt will increase your threat so that it is higher than the highest player on the mob's threat list, whereas this spell just forces the target to attack you, regardless of anyone's threat levels.

EDIT: This spell also does apply a small amount of threat. On my 64 hunter, this amount was 118 (unlike the 110 that wowhead lists). Has anyone experimented to see if that little chunk of threat is transferred to your misdirection target? (even though the spell still forces the target to attack you)

Using this to peel a boss off the tank if he's dangerously low on health, or if the boss has some kind of temporary damage buff can easily mean the difference between a wipe and kill.

Doing it in the latter case will also ease the strain on the healer's mana pool.

I use this to force melee mobs to dance between myself and the tank. Something that is once again useful to do now that heroics are difficult again.

It is also useful to pull off squishier classes, used in conjunction with kiting and deterrence where necessary.

Also good for when you need to freeze something after a pull's been initiated. Lay down trap, back up a bit, and distracting shot. Just make sure it's not DOTted up and the other players know to leave it alone!

it is a very useful ability.

Like in Grim Batol in the General Umbriss fight. you can distract shot the purple trog, so that he runs over your trap hence CCing him.

If your healer is taking damage, and the tank is not near by, you can distracting shot the mob and bring him to the tank.
I remember doing this a lot especially in Vanilla wow.

If you are asked to kite a mob, it is useful to pulling aggro so you may do so. To say that it is a useless ability is an utter falsehood.

One very handy use for it is during the Augh fight in Lost City of the Tol'vir, when he does his Whirlwind ability. Using it then will still cause him to head toward you and away from the rest of the group, which is ideal when you have a melee-heavy group.

Immensely useful ability.

Many times have I used it (mostly in heroic dungeons) when the main tank dies. Along with another taunting DPS class (like a paladin using Hand of Reckoning) you can force the boss to simply run back and forth, never attacking anyone, allowing the rest of the group time to finish him off.

This ability seems to activate "Wild Quiver", which is really annoying when you gonna try and tame a low lvl mob that you wanna ensure stay focused on you.

I got a question that might sound noobish..but...if I Misdirect the tank and use Distracting Shot will this means that the threat boost is transfered to the tank?Can anyone confirm this?

Here's the macro I made for my own use.

The script part randomly chooses one of those lines whenever it's shot. It also tacks on the name of the target. (e.g. if you shot it at Hogger, it might say "Over here Hogger"). It does the same thing with the emote. My reasoning for adding those lines was to make it overly obvious that I want the mob to come at me (for any of the above reasons others have posted). I chose the /s command as I assume most people don't have that speach bubble disabled.

That said, more often than not, the tank will just grab it back anyway (often when the mob was a mere 2 steps away from hitting a trap). This is especially true with death grips lol. Oh well, I tried.

A little more on that macro, you can change the random statements if you'd like. All you do is change the lines inside the quotes (but keep the quotes). You can also make it not say the target's name if you want. Just remove the %t. You could even incorporate your focus' name (%f) as well.

this is currently the best taunt ingame: 6sec duration on an 8sec CD, that's twice the duration of any normal tank taunt! i feel betrayed...

They're awesome if you want to try grab aggro of a healer or caster in instances. You can also use this ability if you want to save your pet at the last second. Many a time have I saved a priest from death's claws, which is why I'm always being invited into raid groups.
Make yourself useful.

As long as the second monster is not receiving dmg from your pet, multi-shot/frost trap is much more effective at pulling and you continue to pour dmg into the original monster....just a thought

should be used for wem u want to trap a monster, u can shoot this at it.

another use is for high end gaming, if u r 70 and the tank is losing aggro to u or a mage, than slap Md on the tank and fire this, aimed, and arcane shot. but there r also other combinations u can use for this.

I find this usefull for kiting.

Have aspect of Cheetah on,
Turn of Pet's Growl OFF (you want the agro on YOU not on the pet)

Drop a Immolation Trap
Hit target with Concussive shot, Serpant Sting and Arcane shot
Turn around and run, making sure target runs over Immolation trap.

then just use RANK 1 Arcane Shot and Distracting shot to keep agro on you,

After you hit the target with the 2nd Distracting shot, send in the pet to attack.

Then just run around either in a straight line (down a road) or around a large circle so the target follows you. It helps if you use natural obsticals like trees, buildings to make the traget slow down. hit it every 5-10secs with Distracting Shot and Rank 1 Arcane Shot to keep agro on you. I normally hit it around 6-8secs about a bit after the Cooldown of Arcanshot wears off. I also keep hit it occasionaly with Serpent's sting, depending on how much mana l have left.

If the traget gets too close or is seeming to get to close the hit it with Concussion again.

Aim of this is to
1: keep the target's agro on you while the pet follows behind and does the dps.
2: Conserving your mana by only useing Distraction shot and Rank1 Arc short.

Doing this l manageed to kill the Elite's which were at least 5lvls above me. I once even killed a skull which was l think at the time 10-12lvls above me, but that took a real long time to down, since my pet was doing like 10-12per hit rather than its normal damage which was around 70-90mark.

Also it helps if your a BM spec and have BEASTIAL SWIFTNESS, cos with aspect of cheetah, you'll be running at 30% and your pet wont catch up to target untill you hit it with concussion.

Anyway it is usefull, l've used it many times to pull excess agro of either healer or tank and traped em or just took the hits while the others were killed.

This spell needs to be buffed alot, it generates way too little agro. Highest rank is like 800-1k Threat if im not mistaken.

I have not used it one time in 45 levels. If another monster gangs up on my pet, i can normally use any of my shots to get it agro me. And I am most definatly not in the habit of pulling agro - thats my pets job. If he dies, oh well, i feign death, res him, try again.

IMO, useless shot, and not enough room on my action bars for it.

Ok...what is the point in this shot?
a hunters main strength is Ranged DPS. People die of laughter at wannabe Melee hunters.
Pets are there to die on our behalfs, and hold the mobs at range. Why would i wanna take the aggro from them?

Pets with the Growl ability as literally set up to HOLD aggro.

Misdirection is designed to allow you to DPS and not take any aggro.

Feign Death is to lose aggro when your getting your ass kicked in Melee.

MM spec Scatter Shot makes the target run about cluelessly giving you enough time to get ranged.

Everything else about a hunter is about doing damage without taking the hits yourself.
that 'oh it saves my pet' is bull&*!@. If your pets about to die, you A) Didn't drop the mob fast enough and B) Can place a freezeing trap and use the 'heal pet' even against tough mobs (assuming non leets) it'll heal faster than it could be damaged.

Pointless ability.

Use Distracting Shot to kite Drakk!

Better yet:

Stand a little bit away from the group.
Lay a freezing trap.
Distracting Shot your designated target on the intial pull.
Switch to the MA target for DPS while a mob stays frozen in front of you.
PROFIT!

Lay a second trap nearby if things start going badly, your group will thank you for the wicked CC.

I use Distracting Shot whenever I figure my owl can't actually handle what she's fighting - she can handle anything safely up to 3 mobs at a time, but even then, I find I'm using Distracting Shot when my owl is about to die, I find that if I do that, of course, I then launch Mend Pet and then hope my owl will outheal the damage its getting. This skill has saved my pet many times.

I've also found that its very powerful in solo if you use it in conjuction with your traps! Set down a trap about half-range between the mob and the full-distance you can go before your out of ranged range. Launch Distracting Shot and watch the mob walk into the trap! You can then let your pet 'Growl the enemy and take the aggro back, therefore, whislt not very powerful in itself, when used with your traps - it can make the Hunter.

If Hunters are wondering how they can cobine traps with their everyday leveling and grinding - Distracting Shot is the answer!

Its amazing how little Hunters know about their own class.

As a hunter I find a way to use every spell I have and think up new ways to use them.

Distracting shot.... brings aggro to you or a misdirected target... You can hit a target in an Ice Trap with distracting shot to build additional aggro if needed or re-establish aggro if you had to FD (often used in Moroes in Kara) this does not break Ice... also concussion shot... adds a bit of aggro but doesnt break ice.

Most hunters dont know that when pulling you can unload on a target build up a huge aggro lead, wait for the warrior to taunt it then FD. This gives the warrior a huge lead on aggro over everyone else because the warrior jumps up to the hunters aggro plus 1. Actually better than misdirect since you get a limited number of shots with Misdirect.

You can also pull entire groups of mobs with a Misdirected + Volly.... and Multishot...

The point of this spell is, in an instance, to pull aggro on your assigned mob and to trap him/her so that it makes it easier on the tank. It is not useless at all. You have no idea how much easier it makes instance running. It not only gets a mob out of your way but it also allows the tank time to gain proper aggro on all of the remaining mobs.

All this talk about getting another monster off your pet... What if your BM huh? Your pet should be able to tank both with ease, it's only two! This is just another one of those abilities that is usefull in a group. What i do is i switch targets with my pet.
Monster1 is the first guy obviously and he is about 1/4 health gone when monster two comes. What i do then is i tell my pet to start attacking monster two while i multishot ect. on monster1. Once monster 1 is dead i finish off monster2 and i heal up my pet and keep going.
Since the heal is a H.O.T. not a channel you can use it WHILE your pet is tanking more than one monster to save time. Or you can just go off with 1/2 health if you don't think it's going to be tanking two anymore.

This abillity sucks! It makes no sense for a hunter to use it. The thing with a pet is that they taunt the enemies, so you just can't stand and shot. So why would a hunter use this when they are much more effective in ranged combat than close engagement!

can someone shed a lil light on a use for this? i bought the first rank but have skipped the rest cause i dont see a use. if i need aggro i turn cower on for pet and after he does it once aggro is lost. might just be my pet isnt good with aggro or im lucky (haha). but is ther a part in the higher game this might play? thx in advance

Distracting shot is an untimate taunt for a Hunter to use when the Mob decides to chomp on a caster. Between your pet growl and the distracting shot, you will keep the hate off them so they can do their job. Most people that just solo or PVP don't use hate midigating abilities. If you are going to group with casters, this spell is invaluable.

Clearly, this is used for pulling certain mobs to "trap" in raids. The Warrior catches the immediate aggro, while the Hunter Distracting Shots one to be frozen and kept frozen untill the time comes to move to that mob. The main objective is to lay more threat than anything was initially placed weither it was to save a healer/clothie, or mearly just to save time on having a 1 on 5/10 rather than a 2 on 5/10 and makes things run quite a bit easier.

Its used in groups when you want to split up a pull. Hunter hits the mob with DS shot and warrior taunts off him.
