This quest should be nick named the Trial of Patience. Recklessness and rushing will most likely push back any progress you've gained on your buff stack.

The goal is to run around collecting the floating frost orbs until you have a stack of 20. There are 3 very large frost spheres that shoot out a stream of frost (Frostburn) in a rotating manner. Each time Frostburn hits, you lose 1 from your stack, and it hits very quickly.

You need to run around the spheres dodging the streams, but keep in mind they turn slightly faster than you can run around them. The way around this is to keep distance, the area is sufficiently large enough to out-range the stream by running to the edges (Don't fall off).

The blue runes on the ground will be a bane to your progress, as stepping on them launches you in the air, causing you to most likely get stuck in Frostburn.

Lastly, underneath the 3 large spheres is a patch of ice, stepping on it will severely slow you down and can easily wipe away your whole stack once Frostburn starts hitting you.

The easiest thing to do is be patient and take open opportunities to collect a frost orb or two safely while keeping safe distance from the spheres, trying to blitz through it will inevitably cause you to get trapped and lose a major chunk of your stack. Each time you collect an orb it resets the stack duration to a minute, which is a very long duration to play it safe and collect the orbs worry free.

Using the rune to 'Jump' the frostburn can be usefull and I believe it is the right way to do it, and this quest should only take you about 1 minute to do. just allow about 1 second lag time, before stepping into the rune.

You can also out run the frostburn if you run in a tight circle, around the large blue orb but not too close as you will step on the frost patch slowing you down.

It is advised not to attempt this quest while there are more than one or two people doing the same. Patience is all well and good, but sadly there is a time limit on how long you can stand in a safe zone and wait to grab another orb (59 seconds). When someone else grabs an orb, you have to wait for it to respawn all over again, so if you are taking the "Stand in a safe zone and grab the nearest ones as they spawn" route, you will not manage it while there are other people grabbing the orbs.

I'm not sure about anyone else, but I for one do NOT find this quest enjoyable in the slightest. In my opinion, trying over and over and over and over and over and over and over again to complete a quest is not fun at all. But then, that's just my opinion. Many others may find this sort of thing amusing.

It's a frustrating achievement, sometimes I can be far away and still get hit by the frost, sometimes I can literally run through it and not get it...annoying and frustrating

Frostburn appears to be a frontal cone attack. Ignore the graphic of the frostburn as it comes out of the large spheres. I've never taken damage from the stream unless I'm directly in front of where it comes out.

I found that this quest was a lot easier to do once you have a mount. Easier yet if you have a swift one. The faster you can go to avoid the frost attacks, the more time you have to think of where to go next.

Easiest way to do this is to simply mount, and then run around the outer rim of the island.

Here's the deal with this, and the related achievement:

You must collect 20 stacks to complete the quest. You only need to collect orbs 20 times in a row without being hit by Frostfire to complete the achievement - You can lose your stacks, having to start the quest over, but your achievement will continue on to completion as long as you ARE NOT HIT!

This makes the achievement fairly simple to do, if you have patience to find a safe spot and dart in and out to gather orbs when they come back up. Once you have the achievement done, you can work on getting a stack of 20 to complete the quest.

As others have said, the frost coming out of the orbs is not represented by its graphic. It seems to be directly in a straight line from the source of the frost on the orb itself AND the tip of the graphic -- I've been hit by that tip several times, despite that the source of the frost has moved on.

This quest and achievement are essentially a test of patience.

Here's one of the many ways to do it. I personally found this to be the easiest:
(Copypasted from the Achievement comments.)

Extremely easy to do with the help of a Safe Spot. (There's plenty of them on the edges of the area!)

All you need to do is simply find yourself a cozy Safe Spot on the edge of the area, where the Ice Beams won't reach you, and run a few yards forward to grab a nearby orb, then straight back to your Safe Spot and wait for the orb to respawn. Rince and repeat until you've got the Achievement.
Also note that it doesn't matter whether you lose the stacks or not, the Achievement system isn't that picky.

It'll take time, but boy it sure is easy.

Here's an example of the Safe Spot I used to do it along with the nearby Orb Spawn Spots marked with red dots.

The actual hit box for the ice walls seem to be a full graphic ahead of the visual, make sure when doing the quest that you give ample room between you and an incoming ice wall. For those doing the 3 achievements, you will definitely find this one the most irritating simply because there's so little room to manuver and grab orbs, especially when you're competing with another player.

this quest and its fellow quests suck. i eventually abandoned it after having got 15 stacks and then waiting too long only to lose them all. forget it! IT WAS NOT WORTH THE FREAKING TROUBLE.

skip these and move on to something more worth while.

Just touching the essences sometimes doesn't work. You might have to sit and wait for about a second before you get another stack on the debuff.

you people seem to forget that you can't use a mount till 20 & flying mounts don't come till level 60... you should be level 19 at least when doing this quest... do it the proper way, use your feet & run after the little apprentice

Here is the way to do this achievement!
I tried a lot of different methods and read a lot of comments about how to do this.

Use your flying mount. Fly down and grab an orb and take off again asap. As said before you just need 20 orbs in a row, which means you can lose your stacks and still get the achievement. I did this easily and didn't even have to concern about the Frost beam.

I Know that this only helps people with flying mounts, but if you got it, this is one of the easiest achievements you ever get.

One point to make, the blue runes on the ground that shoot you in the air DO NOT count as frost burn. So you don't have to start over if you are hit by one.

You know, if you're gonna make a low-level quest hard to do, make sure the f*^&n dynamics work properly for low level toons trying to complete it. Sometimes the rune traps make you jump, sometimes they don't. Some times the burn gets you some times it doesn't. Hard to figure out a puzzle when nothing's consistent. This is the most annoying quest line I've ever tried and almost makes me want to quit playing the game for good. A big F-U to the programmer who thought these up and the supervisor who gave them the go ahead. I never thought I could get as pissed-off at a game as those people in the gameflix commercials, but this quest line has proven me wrong. I may need a new monitor and cast for my fist.

This is a great way to separate the ragequitters from the true gamers. And I'm... a ragequitter.
Running around on a mount finally did get it done for me. Screw patience. Plus somehow I got the achievement too.

All I can find on the internet is that all you have to do is click the orbs, but I'm not getting any sign of being able to interact with the orbs. so I'm guessing I need the quest to do that.

I did this at level 20. Mounted and just did loops around the edge of the pinnacle. I did not get the achievement but I was able to do the quest relatively painlessly.

You can always come back at higher level and do it with a flying mount.

I did this and the other ones before it as an 85 going for loremaster. I think if I had done this as a new toon I might have given up and quit the game. This was stupid hard.

Mazater's safe spot is brilliant! It took some time but I got the quest done and keep and mind that you have a count down on your stack so get another one before it hits' zero. Also if you have a mount use it!

I started the quest line (2/6/12) , got up to Trial of Frost very quickly attempted it for like 2 hours got soooooo freaking mad so I took a break. Came back today (2/7/12) and managed to get it done in like 20 minutes. The key as many have said is patience, and if possible try to be the only one doing quest at moment. If you are not go do a different one. My first attempt was so frustrating as two others plus the npc apprentice kept getting globes. Stick to outside of the rim(I mean like nearly falling off close) grab globes try not to get hit. If you see that the frostburn is going to hit you , stop let it hit you. If you keep running it will keep hitting you. I stopped running let it hit me sure it took one stack, but it was better than continuing to run. Good luck.

I used to be in a world-top-100 guild, so I have decent reflexes and can move my character quickly while staying aware of my surroundings, etc. When my 12-yr old asked me to help him do this quest, I thought "cake!" It was not cake, however.

I read the quest-giver's suggestion that we use the blue runes to jump over the frost streams... this was more trouble than it was worth. I ended up just brute-forcing it: running from orb to orb, trying to avoid the streams, and sticking to the outer edge (don't go to the inner circumference of the streams... even though the spin-rate of the streams is lower there, you are too likely to be slowed by the frost on the ground). I probably lost 5-6 stacks to stream-hits, but still managed to get to 20 within a minute or so. Although the poster above says you can out-range the stream arms, I found it difficult to do so: they seem to remove a stack (at random) even at the very tip of the arm.

This quest is much too difficult for the skill-level you would expect this early in the game. Not sure what Blizzard designers were thinking?

i found it easy if i stuck close as i could to the base that was spitting out the frost without hitting the frost on the ground. you get quicker revolutions and you can jump out to grab the orbs.

Update as of 5/9/2012 I got fustrated at lvl 20 and was about to give up when I decided to use my regular mount. I also paid attention to how the frost waves were moving following after them after 5 orbs I stood behind the portal waited for a few seconds got 5 and repeat will say it's going to take a few tries but it worked like a charm.

There are a few things confusing about this quest.

1) The portal to the quest location doesn't work as normal. And the quest text is misleading.
It's not enough to simply click on the Frost Portal Stone.
It also doesn't help running through the big round portal doorway nearby. (Something that often works for similar portals.)
No, you have to right click the stone, then right click the portal.

2) You don't hand in this quest where you pick it up, but instead where you do the quest.
It should be easy enough to notice the question mark over the Image of Xylem at the frost platform when the quest is complete.
But at least one commenter missed that.

TIPS:
* The top rated comment has some excellent tips which I'll not repeat.
* There's an associated achievement. Even if you complete the quest, you can carry on until you also complete the achievement. (Alliance can only do the achievement, they don't get the quest.)
* Others have advised mounting up. I personally found it easier to run on foot as the frost streams are easy to avoid by running behind them.
* All the frost streams rotate counter-clockwise. So by sticking to the outer edge and also running counter-clockwise, you can safely run behind a stream.
* The are a number of safe spots on the outer edge (e.g. next to the portal) where you can wait a moment for a frost stream to pass. It won't take long to identify these. And you have plenty of time to collect the next orb before losing all your stacks.
* Collecting orbs seems to take anything from a fraction of a second to at least 1 second. So it's a bit of a stop/start exercise.

Description

You know, some of my apprentices have called me cold hearted. I always say though, I shall not let the temperature of my body parts stand in the way of true learning.

To reach the Trial of Frost, touch the Frost crystal to open a portal. Once there, the goal is quite simple - gather the little floaty ice orb thingies.

To counter the simple, the rotating Frostburns may put back your progress, as it were. If you want to be fancy, you can use the rune traps to jump over them as they rotate by. Neat, eh?
