It should be noted that you don't have to kill just Raging Crawlers, Ferocious Foreststriders, or and specific type of Murloc. Any of the crab, strider, and murloc enemies around Darkshore and Ashenvale can drop their respective key parts, albeit probably at a much lower rate.

Middle of Gelkak's Key - drops from Murlocs which are WEST of the quest giver, they are in the water arround the sunken ship. Not north like mentioned before.

Bottom of Gelkak's Key - drops off Plainstriders to the east, in the forest.

Edit: It is confirmeg that the drop order of those Keys is random, but the coordinates remain the same, and the same mobs drop them.

It's true that all of the creatures all around Darkshore drop off these items but the way Sequnix first described is the best way to do it coz' you can easily kill them off in the close proximity of the quest giver thus solving the quest under the 5 minutes of gameplay!

The Giant Foreststriders are best found in the forest to the north of the Ruins of Mathystra (naga!), where the hill range meets up with the ocean. None of the other foreststriders have the key, only the giant ones do. Got it on my third kill. Careful of the Moonstalker matriarchs, at lvl 20 with their 18/19 cubs, the two can take you down quickly!

The quest that follows is a simple escort with his machine back to Gelkak, but just as you approach him, the machine will turn violent and attack. Druids, keep your finger on your Nature's Grasp button, then Wrath and Moonfire him down. Not hard at all as a solo 18 NE.

The top and middle keys can be found in the immediate area from the crabs and murlocs. The bottom key can be found just north from the Giant FORESTriders. If you're a hunter simply turn on the appropriate tracker. If you are unsure as to whether or not what you're killing will drop what you need, check your tooltip. If your kill drops a part of the key it will say 0/1 or 1/1 (if you already have it).

When doing this quest, there are no "ferocious foreststriders". You have to kill the nearby Giant Foreststriders to get the second part.

This is a very easy quest, I got most of the keys within 1 to 8 kills. I did not have to do the merlocs by the boat nearby, I was able to get that key off the merlocs down the beach by the turtle carcass. The encrusted reef crawler dropped the next key with only 1 kill. The hardest was the Giant Foreststrider, but only because I was not sure it was the right creature and it took 8 kills before I found it. This is the lead quest in a series... I believe the last quest is an elite one. I'll find out soon enough. Good luck

I haven't done "Deep Ocean..", I'm lvl 18, and I didn't swim around the ship, but I got the quest. If the robot is around him, you cannot get it. Wait until he goes back.

The Giant Forestriders will do fine. There are some near the ruins just north of where the captain is. Took me two kills before I got the key.

Nope, this isn't a prerequsite. It's a good idea to do both at the same time though - I got one of the keys for this quests while killing Murlocs on one of the ships associated with the above quest.

This quest isn't a pre-requesite for Deep Ocean, but you get under-water breathing potions as the reward for this quest, so it sure comes in handy.

The bottom part of the key you get off the level 19 Crabs basically just beside the questgiver.

The Middle of the key which u get from the murlocks comes from another underwater ship at 55,11.

The top part of the key came from the first Giant Forestrider I killed directly east to the land from the questgiver.

Id say the part alot of people are having trouble with is the middle which is at 55,11 so good luck. Got it on the second Merlock kill .

As a lvl 18 dwarf priest with alotta confidence in myself i decided to give it a try . . . i say to myself "how can a stupid lvl 20 Elite sucka scare the prowd dwarf that you are . . ." so i went there coleected the key parts in 5-6 kills and i activated the robot . . . so far so good . . . i walked him to the guy . . . and here the nightmare starts . . . IT WAS TERRIBLE I TELLS YA ! In just one hit he totally smashed my PW:Shield . . . i panicked feared him . . . new shield, mind blast then wand wand . . . and before i knew it i was at 150 health . . . i drank a health pot . . . and in one sec i was at 100 health . . . fear again mind blast wand wand . . . again 150 helth then it was time for my Desperate Prayer . . . PW:Shield mind blast fear wand wand mind blast . . . he was left at 18% and then . . . BOOM 300 dmg Critical . . . sigh thats how sad ends my story of a prowd (dead) dwarf . . . IT WAS EPIC BATTLE ! :D

I found my keys by killing a Murloc, Forestrider (nearby), and Reef Crawler (nearby). It so happens I killed my Murloc way down South on another quest. It was a funny place to find a part of this key.

Anyway, I unlocked the First Mate, ran for my life, tried to Entangle him and he smacked me silly 'til I was dead. Now I can't seem to find him anywhere after ressurection. Oh well. Maybe I'll run into him when I am a lvl or 2 up.

Well, I noticed the pirate guy when taking a hippogryph to Darnassus, so I remembered about him and returned when I got back to Darkshore... then I forgot about the quest, went to help some weak guy get his lockboxes, and found one key on one of the guys in the fully sunken ship north of Auberdine. Then, while helping some guys find their 5 moonstalker pelts for the lost master quest down south, while killing some forestriders for their meat to make stew... the crawler one I found while doing Gubber Blump's fine crab meat quest. So I doubt it really matters where the creatures you kill are.

you get the keys from: Giant Foreststriders, Raging Reef Crawlers, and Greymist Tidehunters or Gremist Oracles.. doesn't matter which Greymist it is, one of them will carry one of the keys.
note: both Greymists are behind Gyromast around the broken ship. the Raging Reef Crawlers are right beside Gyromast. the Giant Foreststriders are off the beach to the northeast from Gyromast. be patient and you will get all 3 keys.
P.S. just so you know, when you get Gyromast's robot and bring it to him, it will turn on you and start attacking you, don't forget it is level 20 and is an elite.

I got the middle part first, I got it from one of the murlocs when I was doing the "Wanted: Murkdeep" quest. I got the top piece from the 3rd giant Foreststrider I killed. They have a 4.9% drop rate. The first raging Reef Crawler that I killed dropped the bottom piece.10.5 drop rate.

For people who don't have coordinates he's just north of the "I" in "Ruins of Mathystra" on the shoreline. He's standing on a tiny hill right by the water.

Murlocs drop one key (guys who protect the big beached monster things), Foreststryders (any kind) drop the second key, and the level 21 crab things drop the thrid key that are located near the guy you get the quest from. This quest is easily done!

But watch out for the second part of it where you have to kill the Thrashwackanator 4100, level 20 elite, i needed me, and two other people to help me!

I did this solo as a level 20 druid. I found it easy to take down the First Mate by employing Entangling Roots after every two spells I cast--the robot never had a chance to hit me!

If you still have the key, then either you haven't completed the quest or if you have done the quest, you can throw away the key. When you turn in the 3 key pieces to him, he tells you to go get his robot. You talk to the robot and lead him back to Gyromast. Once there you have to fight the robot (20 Elite) and then talk to Gyromast once more to end the quest.

{level 18 elf druid - dudugumstick} giromast located on the coast south of the northest little iland on the map (in mists edge). middle of galkaks kay is right next to the quest giver near the rack ship drops off level 20 graymist oracle. 2nd key drops off the nearest level 21 raged reef crauler . 3d key drops off the level 18 foreststryder just east on dhe grass. first i killed one graymist and the key droped off from the second. then i killed the foreststryder (there is onley one). then i went to the crawler, died 3 times until igot it - be cearfull... prety easy quest, good experianse. good luck.

I remember doing this quest 2 1/2 years ago and having so much trouble with it that I never did it again, with any number of characters.

But my 20 Warlock is probably a little overpowered and I was looking for Darnassus rep for the cat mount, so I thought I'd give it another shot. That was the right choice.

Just lucky maybe but one pice of the key dropped from the first crab. Then I started on the Giant Forestriders and it took about 5. But remember that the Forestriders drop Strider Meat (for Strider Stew) and the immensely-valuable Light Feather, so they should be on your Farm List anyway. While I was farming them in the area North of the Ruins of Mathystra, I suddenly remembered that there were lots of Moonstalker Sires and Matriarchs up here...

You need to kill about 30 to 45 of these to complete A Lost Master (https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=986/a-lost-master) and usually that means wandering all over southern Darkshore, dodging bears and who knows what else. But there are bunches of them up here in this lovely parklike area and you can just farm until you complete the quest. Incidentally, I know the Matriarchs drop the quest item but only about 1/3 as much as the Sires.

Even better, if you are a miner, there are about 8 nodes right in the area and at least half of them respawned while I was killing the cats. Very nice.

But wait, there's more! Head over to the coast and you will see the Northernmost small island off the coast of Darkshore. On the North shore of the island, there is often a treasure chest. Last time it only had vendor trash but I have gotten gold and silver bars, as well as several greens from it in the past. Worth a visit.

You'll hate to hear this but the last piece of the key dropped from the first murloc I killed. It helps to have underwater breathing but the real trick is to remember that a number of them are tied, so be prepared to deal with two even if you're only pulling one.

I got the top part from a Raging Reef Crawler, the middle from a murloc south of Auberdine (in the little hut camp where Murkdeep spawns), and after killing tons of Giant Foreststriders, I got bored and went off to grind a little.

Imagine my surprise when the bottom part of the key dropped from an Encrusted Tide Crawler!

Don't know if it's supposed to work like this, or if the game somehow lost track of which mobs I'd already gotten parts off, but if you're struggling, I guess it couldn't hurt to go and grind on crawlers for a while :)

middle key got it from first murloc I killed, bottom key from first crawler, for the top Key I killed all the giant foreststriders near Gelkak but did not get it, got this key from a Giant Foreststrider near Grimclaw ( the white bear) to the south of Grove of the Ancients.

You can only retrieve the key parts from folowing three mobs: Giant forestriders (most seen near Ruins of Mathystra and far south near the boarders of Ashenvale), Encrosted Tide Crawlers (most seen near Cliff Spring River) and last but not least - i've found keys on murlocs all around Darkshore.

You can only get 1 key for each kind of mob, so you HAVE to kill at least one of each kind.

There is no order in how the keys drop besides this.

This is written strictely out of my own expirience, so if people have other solutions different than mine, theirs might be as true as mine, or even more correct..

I got mine from the lvl 20-21 tidecrawlers, killed around a dozen or so.

The murloc one i found by accident, underwater, near the wreckage of a ship close by the area, from a white caster one, like a previous poster. I was in sea lion mode and it pissed me off so I went into caster form and dropped it. I wasn't even looking for it b/c I'd was so tired hitting up the murlocs down south the lvl 18-20 ones, thinking the higher levels would drop easier. Nope.

The giant lvl 19 forest striders gave me the key (in the area where the naga show up), 4th one gave it up. Watch out for the naga while looking the forest striders. Their aggro range is much greater and always bring another one. Spent days on the lvl 18 striders, nope.

I found all 3 parts of the key. They were fairly easy drops. The key the murlocs drop was dropped by some murlocs who were guarding a washed up dead sea creature on the beach. In my case I was well-south of Auberdine -- I think it was the shell of the sea turtle.

The ragin crawler was also in the deep south area. I think I was on the shore west of Remtravel's Excavation site.

The most confusinig was the "Ferocious Forestrider". Normally the quest-givers are pretty accurate, and I check to make sure the mob is the right type. Turns out the game doesn't have a mob named "Ferocious Forestrider". The drop comes from "Giant Forestriders". I got mine to drop on the first kill.

As for the bug: Though the quest log shows that I am now 'complete' and I have all 3 parts of the key, I cannot turn it in to Gyromast -- nor does he have the common yellow "?" above his head. He wont say anything more to me that "Hi, how ya doin".

I encountered the same type of bug on a former quest, submitted it to tech support and got a reply back that they *know* about this bug. The last time I found that the NPC finally got the yellow "?" over his head about 2 days after I completed the quest. My guess is they have some database problems and it hasn't quite figured out that I've completed it.

The only foreststrider lvl 19 left in the forest north of auberdine DID NOT drop a key. There are no more striders in the area except around auberdine (those are around lvl 13 and i terminated a lot of them without getting a key)

A greymist oracle (murloc) swimming around the sunken ship near the pirate gave me a key after killing lot's of them. I'm lvl 19 druid, which is easy if you have loads of time or food for your mana or health.

Non of the crawlers around gave me any key (and i killed every mtf last 1 of them till the turtle with the house on it) lvl 21 crawlers are a match vs 19 lvl druid. Again loads of time or food needed. 1 crawler cost about all ur mana and health.

My inventory is full with pearls, murloc scales, crawler meat, clam meat, murloc eyes, feathers (yeah i got the big satchels) and i'm ready to nuke the complete continent... story continues?

As Maldrid said below, the key parts were all located (at least for me!) within the immediate proximity of the NPC. One part on first Foreststrider I came to in the woods above the beach; one part on Encrusted Tide Crawler just down the beach by the First Mate, and final part on an underwater Greymist Tidehunter guarding the shipwreck just behing the NPC. Easy hunting!

Ok this quest is extremely easy, and simple. Why you people have gone trekking all around darkshore is beyond me, heres what you do...

Step 1. accept the quest from the little gnome dude.

Step 2. Look around you! Kill the crabs around you until a section of key drops.

Step 3. Run slightly north and look west, you will see a ship wreckage...there are murlocks underwater in that area, kill them until Another section drops.

Step 4.Run east and you will see some Giant foreststriders, kill them until last segment drops and ta da! your quest is done.

Step 5. Return to little gnome dude...simple!

This mob will only issue or complete the quest when the first mate is not active on the map... if you can't get the ! or the ? above his head then chances are that the first mate is alive and just a little south of him along the beach. if you wait for about 3 to 5 minuets the first mate will despawn and the captain will once again be willing to talk with you

The murlocks are in he boat right behind the dude (where you get the quest).. The striders are right in front, the crawly things right on beach by him give the 3rd part. Don't need to go out of eyesite of the questgiver.

ok everybody can hate me if you like, but i'm just saying it's possible...

upon getting the quest, i immediately turned and shot a nearby crawler. part of the key dropped.

i went a little ways north along the coast and sent my voidwalker after the first pair of foreststriders i saw. one of them dropped part of the key.

then i walked south and west along the shoreline til i found some murlocs. wasn't very far. the last part of the key dropped on the first kill.

fastest quest i've done in darkshore. this time. it's taken longer on other occasions. maybe it's the luck of the gnomes.

I found all sections to the key right by NPC from Raging crawler beneath him...fom Giant foreststrider slightly to NE of him and last piece from murloc near shipwreck in sea next to him. Hope this helps ^^

The top of the key comes from the Giant Foreststriders in the south of Darkshore, around The Master's Glaive area. THese are level 18-20.

The middle part comes from the Mulocs around the beach huts south of Auberdine. The huts are found about even with the grove, so it's a ways down the coast. This is the same place Murkdeep spawns, so it's worth getting the Kill Murkdeep quest when doing this as well. These arelevel 16-18.

The bottom part drops off the tide crawlers north of the river mouth, north of Auberdine. I got mine off an encrusted tide crawler, but I suspect the raging tide crawlers will also drop them. THe encrusted were level 19-20, raging a bit higher.

I started completing this quest by accident. I had it in my quest log when I started doing gubber blumps quest.

Anyway, I got one key off of the murlocs that are in the two wrecked ships near of auberdine.

Then I got one key off the encrusted reef crawlers near the mouth of the cliffspring river.

And I saw some of the giant forestriders just across the bridge when heading towards ashenvale. It's quite a way past ameth aran.

i killed a giant forester between Remtravel's Excavation and the shore, then on the shore, i killed a murloc (from the ones round the turtle looking creature) i had a bit of trouble finding a "ragin" crawler, so i killed an encrusted crawler on the off chance and it dropped part of key....I only had to kill one of each and q was complete!

You do not have to go all the way south to get the Giant Foreststrider like I did. Yes they need to be lvl 18-19 or so but there are some right near the beach in the forest. It's really close to where the first mate is. My friend got the key from there and they are between the beach and the serpent people that have the relics. Closer to the beach though so no need to run south anymore.

You should try to pick this quest up early, or not at all. You might have to kill a lot of creatures before you get the keys and probably get the keys to drop while doing other quests. I just abandoned this after saying 'just one more murloc' about a thousand times.

Soloable as a rogue. (Atleast in my expereince) I was lvl 23 sub spec make smart use of LoS, gouge and evasion/ghostly strike no heal pots used or bandages gun or ranged weapon is usefull almost died if I didn't have one you can solo it though. As for the keys I was just very unlucky had to kill about ~50 murlocs the other keys I got in about 10 kills.

Dont be confused by some of the comments. THIS is a non elite quest, where you have to grind 3 types of mobs to re-assamble the key. Many posters are talking about the follow up quest, which IS an elite quest. The follow up is hard and you either have good class knowledge or group up with 1 or 2 others.

Especially with Hardcore live now, you have to know such things. :) E.g. in the elite follow up quest the mechanical mob turns hostile (spoiler -.-) out of nowhere and probably will kill most of the people who have no idea. After having collected all 3 key parts you can turn in THIS quest here and accept the follow up without worries. At this point you should be looking for other players to team up with. You have to visit the mechanical named mob and activate him. After you escorted him to the pirate quest giver he goes mad and attacks you.
