If you're having trouble finding enough Gryphons to farm the feathers, you can go to Feralas and fight the Frayfeather Hippogryphs in the south there. The drop rate isn't as good, but theres many more mobs closer together, so it goes quicker usually.

Witherbark Hideskinner also drop these its like a 9% drop rate but its less hastle than running all over the map they are located at 31, 57

Did this in about thirty minutes, killing the trained razorbeaks quite near Aerie Peak. They have a good drop %, are low level so easy as hell to kill, & while waiting for them to respawn which doesn't take long at all you can easily pop down the path to Hillsbrad & kill Granistad, Kudros and the couple of wild gryphons flying about near them for extra feathery goodness.

I hated this quest. Not only were the stupid gryphons spread far apart, but the respawn is slow, and for me at least, the drop rate was horrible. I killed almost 70 just to get the 10 feathers. And my last feather took 20 gryphons. I sincerely hope everyone else has a way better drop rate.

I also attempted to gather the feathers from the Hinterland Gryphons, but it was too difficult to find any and the drop rate was very disappointing.

After reading a few comments here and on other sites, I tried my luck in Azshara for the Thunderhead Hippogryph's that are located right after entering the area from Ashenvale (you should fly to Splintertree Post and travel the road east). The drop rate was quite good for the Long Elegant Feathers, but above all, you have many Hippogryphs to choose from in a relatively small area. Took me no more than 20 minutes.

These comments are correct. Wasted hours on rare Skylords with crappy drop-rates in Hinterlands. Went to Azshara and got a nice 50% drop-rate from the many Thunderhead Hippogryphs (dark-blue ones) in the southwestern region (southwest of the Horde camp). Well worth the trip!

Two things to note about doing this quest in Feralas: don't expect the drop rate to be any better, it's just that there are many more hippogryphs there. Also, I spent a lot of time killing other varieties of hippogryphs and none of them dropped the feather, so I would stick with Fayfeather Hippogryphs only, as they seem to be the ones that drop it.

I waited at "Featherbeards Hovel" 13,53. near Aerie Peak. Its a great place to wait for spawns because the hovel is empty and you can run in there if you see Alli and you're Horde. Also its a high point overlooking a small valley.

Definitely the best place to find the feathers is right by Aerie Peak and Featherbeard's Hovel. They are right by the entrance to the Hinterlands from the South West and Plaguemist Ravine North of that. The drop rate was pretty high and the quest only took me about 25 minutes.

go to feralas and get the feathers from those hippgryphs they drop sooo muchfaster i got 4 in like 2 minutes. you can stay in hinterlands but feralas drops are better and faster

This can also be grinded in Azshara from the Thunderhead Hippo's the droprate is 36% the hippo's are 46-48 and plenty of em' around the horde camp.

At least on Blackrock, the value of long elegant feathers makes this quest a waste unless you want the reward from the end of the chain. ~10g on AH or 2g plus some gear that sells for for 50s? Yeah, I'll take the 10g.

If you grind for these in Feralas, keep in mind that they only drop from the Frayfeather Hippogryphs. Don't bother killing the other types.

Just finished this one and the advice to go to Aerie Peak is the best. Was able to knock out all 10 in no time.

This is the most frustrating quest I've come across in a long, long time. The drop rate is appalling. If Blizzard just wanted you level while attempting this farce then they succeeded. To date I've gone up a level, skinned a over 100 gryphons and still have only 6 feathers. If this wasn't the middle of a chain quest I'd have given it up ages ago. I still mightn't finish it.

Took me over an hour to grind this crap. Low spawn rate. You're better off killing these guys as you do other quests. Don't try to do it all in one sitting.

Although this quest gives good xp and the next quest is easy, it still isn't worth doing it. Better to just skip this quest, while you can get twice the xp for the time you spend on this quest by doing some other quests is what I would suggest.

No matter what way you to it this quest will probably be tedious. What I did is I made a path to follow. If you check the locations of the razorbeak skylord's and gryphons in the hinterlands, as well as the trained gryphon you can see a path you can follow from skull rock over near Hiri'watha and then in front of Aerie Peak. Follow this path killing any gryphons you see and then kill the 4-5 near Aerie. Head down into Hillsbrad and kill the 3 there. Come back and repeat.

It took me a long time to do this; a good 20 minutes or so. After I hit 8 feathers none dropped for a while. Then I made 2 kills outside of Aerie and got the last ones. 7850 XP as a level 51 shaman. Not a bad return for the work involved, tedious as it was.

The Trained Razorbeaks have a high chance of dropping the elegant feathers, so focus on them. The only problem is they're close to Aerie Peak check around 19,53 I saw like 4-5, I needed 2 feather and killed 2 and got 'em.

I don't care what anyone says, if u want to do this quest just buy the long elegant feathers in the auction house! the drop rate is pathetic!!! im on my 7th feather, killing any gryphon i see, and i have been done with the other Hinterland quests for nearly a week now! buy them, don't waste your time.

^ this quest can be pretty rough. I'm doing it currently at level 80 for some achievements and have spent over an hour.

These feathers are no longer common in the AH due to the expansions. I've hunted gryphons to extinction four times over combing the entire zone. I've cleared the Witherbark camp at (30,58) 3 times (for a grand total of 1 feather). I have 6 so far.

I might add this quest doesn't add to the Loremaster of Eastern Kalimdor achievement and obviously neither does the next step.

Azhara beginning at 18, 58 and north and east. Horde flight at Valormark 21.9, 49.7 is closest - land there and work west and south. I can't say that statistically the drop rate on the Thunderheads is better than other gryphons - however, there are lots and lots of them and I got 5 in less time than it took me to get 1 in The Hinterlands.

I guess the best way to do this quest is to complete Message to the Wildhammer first in this zone then do this one because you will encounter many Razorbeaks during doing other quests so you can just slowly gather the feathers instead of trying getting them in a short time.

I was just swinging between Aerie Peak and the two gryphons on the path to The Hinterlands from Hillsbrad Foothills, Kurdros and Granistad. It was faster than travelling through the whole area.

If you are like me and get frustrated by the plenty of quests in WoW that have lousy droprates, then do NOT attempt to complete this quest. Others here have said "the droprate is good in the west part of Hinterlands" but that's definitely not true. I've made this quest on 3 occasions and every time I tell myself why the heck did I ever bother.

Last time I went there I cleared ALL spawns TWICE and managed to collect ONE feather. Other times I get two feathers in two kills, but before you have managed to get 10, you will be bald. This quest is a complete waste of time unless you can buy the feathers off the AH, not to mention the long trip you need to make to reach this part of the zone.

I don't know how Blizzard's quest designers define "fun", but this quest does not qualify.

Hmm, reading comments here it seems like you used to need 10 (?) feathers. I have never done this quest until now, but as of 3.2.2 you only need 1 feather to complete the quest.

There's a bit of gryphons to the far west in that narrow passage by Aerie Peak. The drop rate is ridiculously retarded. I must have killed nearly 30 and only received 5 so far.

Make this quest easier on yourself.

Go to Feralas and kill the Frayfeather Hypogryphs. They DO count towards the quest and definitely drop the long elegant feathers more often than the Hinterlands Gryphons.

There are plenty of them just below the yeti cave around 55,60.

I strongly recommend that you go to Azshara. There are Thunderhead Hippogryphs there and in 20min I killed 33 and got the needed 10. Theres alot of them there so happy hunting!

I'd like to add my agreement that these feathers are a horribly rare drop, about one in 8 or so is what I've experienced so far, and I'm only to 7 feathers. If the other areas have better drop rates, I definitely recommend that you go there, because these are bad.

However, I definitely disagree with the previous post about getting the feathers off the trolls of Hiri'watha. I've slaughtered the entire village twice, and while I appreciate all the mageweave and silk, I've not gotten one feather.

Just go Feralas and kill the Frayfeather Hippogryph's there. They are loads more of and the drop rate isnt that bad either. They roam @ 54, 64 south-west of the ogres in High wilderness

Killed about 10 gryphons and nothing dropped (Hinterlands). Teleported to Thunder Bluff, looked in AH and bought 6 for a cheap price. Then went to Feralas and killed 6 frayfeathers- got 3 right away. The last one took about 5 minutes before it dropped but you also get vibrant plumes from these guys so it was worth it.

After reading previous posts I went to try in Feralas. Feather dropped from first one I killed, but then spent 45 minutes not getting any more. Went to Hinterlands where the droprate from the gryphon's at Aerie's Peak was around 1 in 3. Took 30 minutes to finish there.

yes i agree that there should be more gryphs to kill, i ive gained a lvl and almost 1/4 doing this damn quest, and still got 2 feathers to go, i tried feralas, and killed almost 100 hypogrypths, while the xp was good, it gets borinf running around killing same mobs for hrs, then i go back to hinterlands, and ive spent another 5 hrs killing these. theres about 7 ive seen sonewide, and ive killed those named ones too. This quest is the worst drop quest ive seen out of the whole game, ive done 2 lvl 60 alliance toon's, and this one is my horde toon, and never have i seen a more frustratingly BS of a quest, my advice is, if u wanna have fun, skip this quest and grind elsewhere till u can do other quetss here.

You can also get the feathers from any hippogryph in Azshara. They seem to have a great drop rate. I killed maybe 9 or 10 and got 4 feathers. I would definately suggest going there.

Wish I'd read this last night it would have saved a lot of frustration. Rode round the Hinterlands looking for and killing gryphons for 3 hours and got 3 feathers. Today I did the same and got 2.
Went to Feralas and killed Frayfeather Hippogryphs and got the other 5 feathers I needed in 10 minutes.
Frayfeathers are just south of the yeti cave.

My conclusion: Every place has very low drop rate...

If ur lower then 46, u should stay at hinterlands or mass farm feralas. (pref. hinterlands cos higher drop rate.)

But if ur 47+, absolutely best drop rate at ur lvl is
Thunderhead hippogryphs in Azshara.

Loc: 18,55. For those who hasn't locs (shame on ya) go to south west at valormok.

Im telling you right now , if you dont go below aerie peak in The Hinterlands to do this quest, and your running around all over the Hinterlands trying to find these things, you'll be there for DAYS. Theres bout 20 of these hypogriphes in The Hinterlands, not joking. 10-12 of them are spread out all over The Hinterlands, and about 8 of them are right below Aerie Peak. So you have two choices. Run around all over trying to find those 10 spread out ones. Or go below Aerie Peak, kill the 8 that are close to eachother there , and wait for respawns. I tried the hard way , not knowing this batch was down there at Aerie Peak. It took me 2 hours to get 7 feathers... Then i find this place and get my last 3 in a matter of 3-5 minutes.

Geeez, the drop rate is beyond horrible at both places I tried (Hinterlands and Feralas). But, I quested them in Feralas since it helped with oohhhh, three quests at once. I killed about 60 Hippos for the 10 feathers, but I got 20 of another quest item, 10 of another, and 40 of another. It makes things easier when you are working three at once. I was doing Hippogryph Muisek (Feralas quest) and Natural Minerals (Feralas quest also). Each kill dropped at least one quest item most of the time. I got about 10 that didnt drop anything at all. Its the best spot to hunt if you have the other quests to do as well.

Just in case nobody already saw.. yes they do drop from the Hippogryphs 16,54 and as well they are all over the Hinterlands. But, the Witherbark Trolls at 31, 58 also drop them.

I've gotten two already from killing 5 of the Witherbark's. Uhm, that and the Hippogryph's are good.

The drop rate isn't that good, but they do drop, so don't get frustrated!

While I agree the drop rate in Hinterlands isn't that good I managed to find a drop ratio of 1:3. IE: For approximately every 3 Gryphons I killed, one of them dropped the Long Elegant Feather. The two places I grinded them were near Quel'Danil Lodge and Aerie Peak.

If you are like me and sometimes jumps between quests..you may..eh...end up selling/vendor them...

First off, at least for the Horde, the Hinterlands and Feralas are *very* connected quest-wise. Certain items you wouldn't want to hunt up in the Hinterlands can be easily pulled up in Feralas, and vice versa. So don't be afraid to fill up your quest log with both.

Second, virtually every type of gryphon and hippogryph will drop Long Elegant Feathers; it's not merely a case of a single group. This is because they're actually a trade item too, and can be used to make the Admiral's Hat, among others. So whichever drop rate is highest is what you can use.

Finally, if none of these pan out, you can buy and sell the feathers on the Auction House; they're not bound.

If you are tired of not finding any feathers in hinterlands from the hippogryphs i found plenty on the hippogryphs in ferelas cords are around 55,61 if you dont have cords thats in the high wilderness....gl :o)

ive been on this quest for ages now been to feralas tried hinterlands and azshara and ive only got 5 from all those places i got a feather in 1 and evey 20 kills shocking drop rate been here for over 6 hours got the most drop rate at hinterlands 1 in every 5 but there arent very many around only about 5 roming hinterlands

Ok, here is how I did it in about 30 minutes, I went to the far west in hinterlands, right between "Featherbeards Hovel and the "Wildhammer Stronghold". I kept killing the "Trained Gryphons, while the drop rate wasn't great, it wasn't bad, I got all 10 in about 30 minutes because the trained gryphons all respawn in the same area and don't roam and there are a lot of them. In between I just kept knocking out the wolves that spawn there too. Like I said, it only took me 30 minutes. Best of luck to ya :)

Wauw, how many times can ppl keep writing to hunt for hippogriphs in Feralas or Azshara? One or two times should be enough for even the tensest of persons.

I say stay in the Hinterlands and heres why: If you go to the area just southeast of Aerie Peak and grind out the Mangy Silvermanes (wolf mobs), it would appear that the spawn of the Trained Razorbeaks are linked to the death of these wolves.

So if you kill the Mangy Silvermanes, chances are that the Trained Razorbeaks will respawn next. Now Im not saying that this will improve your drop rate, but it gives you plenty of mobs to obtain the required # of drops in a short period of time. Perhaps this will save you a trip to the opposite continent and back. Couple this with the fact that a few other threads on this forum have said that the drops in Feralas are just as bad as Hinterlands, all of a sudden sounds like a great idea to just stay in Hinterlands.

I have noticed a couple of quests in Hinterlands that have this exact same effect. A great example is the quest where you need to kill Vicious Owlbeasts. If you slay the the invisible wolves the Vicious Owlbeasts usually spawn next.

Anyhow I stuck it out and followed this plan and completed the quest in roughly 30-35 mins in Hinterlands.

I don't know what the hell is going wrong for me, but I killed a few in the Hinterlands and got 1 feather. Then I read the comments here and moved on to Feralas, first kill got me a feather.

Almost an hour later grinding on the same Frayfeathers, even managed to get my pet from 0% to the next level, and still I only have 2/10 feathers.

I give up. Well, maybe I'll go back to the Hinterlands later and try again there but a word of advice.... only do this if you have patience, and are in the mood for some raw grinding.

Get mine Long Elegant Feather x10 from Frayfeather Hippogryphs in Feralas 55.62
It was nearly 26% drop chance, not hard as it seems. Happy farming

I think I know the problem, some of you folks are attacking as soon as they respawn. Wait a few mins. I've notice they change from a Trained to normal bird. Wait till they change and the drop rate will be better

I don't see how so many people are having difficulties with drops.

I grinded ~30k xp off hippogryphs in feralas with a friend using the muisek quest item to take away every other kill, and I had them within an hour. ~20% drop rate (100+ kills). Plus hippogryphs have decent drops.

Okay, I'm up to my mmm maybe… 46th kill, and I have one feather. The thing is, the first one i killed dropped the only feather I have. After about 30 kills i thought, well be patient, maybe theres a bug. so i tried logging out and back in but nothing, just about 5 minutes ago another dropped so I'm hoping they start dropping faster.

Dont even bother with this quest. I must have killed 25 gryphons in the Hinterlands and recieved 4 feathers. I then moved to Feralas and killed at least 25 more at 56,62 and only recieved 3 feathers. Yes I am killing the right ones.......i must have wasted 3 hours on this quest. I am a 50 rogue so the killing is easy.....at both locations the drops are terrible. Just abandon it and move on.

all around 19'53, i got 80% of my feathers from those (just outside aerie peak) while waiting for them to respawn have a ride around the map as theres a few stray ones about, don't know if they drop them bud i killed them anyway - Kudros & Grannistad just at the entrance to hinterlands from hillsbrad. took about 30 min, 30 odd kills.

I have no idea why everyone is having trouble with this quest. So far i have killed 7 gryphons and got 6 feathers. only reason i havent finished yet is coz im falling asleep. I just killed 4 razorbeak skylords and the rest razorbeak gryphons.

i found many of them close to aerie peak, there are always 6 or 8 wandering in that area... i killed those, then waited for a respawn, killed again and i was done...

btw those in that area were lvl 40 or 42, so this quest can be done easily even low level...

I followed the advice here and went to Feralas.
A few thousand in XP just for traveling to the spot.

Within 8 kills I had the last 3 feathers I needed.

for this quest i strongly recoman azshara..even though the thunderhead hyppogryph (around19.56) are lvl 46-48 the drop ratio is excelent...in my case about 75%...so good luck

This quest took me ages as gryphons are hard to find. Initially I thought that only the mobs with "gryphon" in the name would drop the feathers. But as I was getting hacked off with the quest I killed a razorbeak gryphon "look alike" and it dropped a quest feather. The other mistake I made was to try and not wander too far from Raventusk (because I was lazy) and gryphons are far and few between in most of that area. Eventually I cracked it. Head all the way back to where you first came into the Hinterlands from Hillsbrad, where you drop down of the path to avoid the alliance town, there is a good collection of them right there and they spawn reasonably fast. Don't bother going anywhere else. The drop rate is still rubbish though!

I get stacks of these when farming hippogryphs in Azshera, just west of the horde flight path area.

If you don't want to hunt for the feathers, buy them on the Auction house.

Cost me 3 gold, but at to save time it was worth it.

As the post by 'ihavenoname' suggests..look on the AH if you cant be bothered to spend an hour finding these things. Loads on the AH for 30sp a pop. Quest took me all of 30secs, the hardest bit, being when i went the wrong way going up the slope to the post box in UC. Hairy moment, but after i circeled the main area once, i found the box, calimed by feathers, and rejoyced in the ease!

Razorbeak Skylord in hinterlands was not instant for me. Took a few minutes for respawn, and wandered between 51.46 to 61.56. After killing it four times without a drop, it was also no better than the rest. Running around zone in circles to find the other gryphons was not convenient either.

Might wanna check the drop rates on the feathers first, because when you do you won't be wasting your time in the hinterlands.

ps: don't farm the gryphons outside of the alliance town, if you know what's good for you. (The drop rate is definitely not 22%.)

They drop off the gryphons in the Hinterlands - just a low drop rate. The drop rate in Feralas off the Frayfeather Hippogryphs is around 20%... well worth the time to go there. Much larger population to kill in Feralas without having to run all over Hinterlands looking for an occasional gryphon that likely won't drop the feather.

The quest is silly to require 10 feathers and then tell you to hunt gryphons... bad design, for sure.

However, I HAVE gotten them from the gryphons... so if you're so inclined... good luck.

Don't waste your time killing gryphons. Go to Feralas and kill Frayfeather Hippogryph's drop rate is great. You can find them at 54,61 in Feralas.

The drop rate in Feralas has decreased significantly but overall it's still doable there. I would say to get all 10 it took me about 1 hour there.

Drop rate in Feralas is terrible. Hubby and I did Natural Materials and a hypogriff kill quest there, and we now have a total of 10 feathers between us both. This was several hours of killing, over the course of 3-4 days. I would estimate 1 in every 50 kills, you get a drop. Haven't tried Hinterlands yet, but I am hoping it is better than Feralas. We also checked AH but there were none there at the time.

Feralas is the place to be. Seems I only got them off the Hippographs, so concetrate on them. Fast respawn. None of the other dropped them for me.

Go kill the Hippogryphs in Azshara as shown here:

The drop rate didn't seem better at all for me - but there are just a ton of them floating around. Whereas finding them in The Hinterlands could be a bit of a pain.

It just seems faster because there's a bunch around in one spot, instead of running around all over the place looking for them.

Just watch out for the 53ish Elite Giant wandering around there.

You can also get them from Witherbark Hideskinners in Hiri'watha. Pretty good drop rate there...about 50% for me.

Way easier to get them off of frayfeathers in southwest Feralas. The drop rate is pretty good and there are a TON of them in one small area. By the time you kill them all, they are repopping behind you. Hunting them up in Hinterlands is a PAIN!

As stated before, Ferelas is the place for this quest. Killing in the high wilderness there are tons of hippogryphs. The purple (as opposed to the blue) drop the feathers at a one to two or three drop rate.

Also useful for the natural materials quest as these guys (blue ones too) drop the metallic fragments you need 40 of... very handy!

completed as a lvl48 lock destruction spec in an hour and a half (both natural materials and this quest) once i got to ferelas (had owlbeats in hinterlands done already)

i dont know about u people but this quest was like torture. If u do this quest anyway please for god sakes kill the trained razorbeaks around aerie peak, drop rate about 50%. not like in the rest off the entire hinterlands where i found 1! out off 25-30

I had to go to Feralas and kill Frayfeather Hippogryph's to get the feathers. They don't seem to drop off any of the Gryphons you find flying around in the Hinterlands. Drop rate was decent in Feralas.

I made a similar post in the Natural Materials quest thread in feralis.. but just so you know the easiest way to get these 10 feathers is not to kill griffons.. go to feralis and kill hyppogryphs down the western side of 'The high wilderness'.

They drop the feathers too and there are HEAPS there all clustered up.

The Long Elegant Feathers are also a Tailoring ingredient, which is why they'll drop regardless of whether you're on this quest or not.

I know the quest probably isn't worth going to org to buy them but i'm a quest freak and MUST finish it!

I play on the PvP Eredar server, and I can testify that the Hinterlands are a waste of time for gathering feathers. In about a half-hour of running around over every inch of the Hinterlands, I found one, ONE skylord and he didn't even drop. You're far better off going to Feralas to take out hippogryphs or even better, go to an AH and search for a batch of these feathers up for sale. I got 6 this way, another 2 from Feralas (proof that Hinterlands' a waste) and the remainder from a skylord. This is definitely a quest you need to show some savvy in completing, not just grinding mindlessly.

I found that the area with the most concentrated amount of gryphons was near Aerie Peak (the Alliance town). Just be careful and you shouldn't have any problems. Also, the wolves and gryphons share a re-spawn, so if gryphons are scarce, kill some wolves until the gryphons come back. Have fun!

I remember doing this on my main about 6 months ago. Back then, these feathers dropped ALL THE TIME. Now, as a new lvl 49 BE Mage, I have literally killed about 11 of these so far, and only have 2 feathers. What gives. Did any of the recent patches nerf the droprrate. This is like how Zanzil's Secret used to be.

EDIT: I have killed 17 now, and still have only two feathers...

EDIT: Well, as of my 19th kill, I got a third feather. Seven more to go...

EDIT: And I got two more over my next three kills after that. Strnage how the drop system works.

I tried to get the feathers in the Hinterlands but the drop rate was really bad (I had six feathers after killing 30 gryphons). So I went to Feralas and the drop rate there was as bad as in the hinterlands or even worse (killed 30 and got 4 feathers). But in Feralas you don't have to run around the whole region to find one hippogryph and the spawn rate is really good. After 15 min I had my last feathers and could turn in the quest...and I also got a green plate that I could sell :)

So my advise is don't waste your time running around in the hinterlands looking for gryphons when you can find the feathers more easely in Feralas

Razorbeak Skylord also drop Long Elegant Feather and since it's a quest mob the respawn time is almost instant... got 6 feather on 8 kill so far.

The area around Aerie's Peak and Featherbeard's shack is definatly the place to go if staying in Hinterlands. Reasonable amount to kill with good spawn rate. Almost 50 percent drop rate plus a green and a blue drop for the auction house.

I started this quest when I first got it, around level 45. I took a break for a while and finally finished it, after killing tons of Gryphons.

From Revantusk Village, go West up the hill into The Hinterlands. Aerie Peak seemed to have a lot, so I ended up there.

Very low drop rate over all, but not all that hard. The worst is when the gryphons are by the wolves and you have to kill multiple enemies at once. But not too bad overall.

Turn it in back at Revantusk Village.

Whether you farm in Hinterlands or Ferales, the drop rate is horrible. I don't mind drop quests, but this one is the worst one EVER and I won't be doing it again. Happy hunting.

Farmed the Frayfeather Hypogryphs in Feralas (coords: 55/61) for roughly 30 minutes in order to get the 10 Long Elegant Feather. The drop rate is not great. To my experience it dropped every 4rth mob or so.
Keep in mind that you can also buy the Long Elegant Feather in the AH, so have a look before starting grinding.

Yeah, the older comments talking about the high droprate in Azshara are not remotely true anymore. When I picked this quest up, I was already 5/10 from my previous questing in Feralas (including some grinding on the hippogryphs there). Not feeling like going back there again or hunting the spread out gryphons in Hinterlands, I went to Azshara. I was on my 10th kill before a feather dropped and it did not improve much from there. All told, I had to kill about 45 to get my five feathers.

The good news is that there is a nice concentration of them near the horde flight point (and alliance as well I believe) so they are easy to get to and kill. Just don't expect a great droprate.

I personally had a slightly better drop rate with Skylords over Trained gryphs. This was a frustrating quest with a crappy drop rate and targets few and far between. It wasn't uncommon to loot nothing from kills. You can also hit up the Hideskinner trolls who also drop them (about as frequent as gryphs). At least the trolls have the added benefit of dropping potions, wildvine, and a few coins- better than the gryphons.

There are too few Gryphons in Hinterlands, and the Feralas area is often crowded with people doing other quests which require the same Hippogryphs, so I found that the best place to get these is the western part of Azshara. Even if the drop rate is not great, you can pretty much just keep going until you're done, since there are many spawns and they are not very contested.

Just watch out for the elite Cliff Walker, especially if you are on hardcore.

Did this in classic in Azhara as others pointed out. Head to the open area near the horde FP 17,53. Decent drop rate not great but respawns fast. Watch for elite giant, the ground will start shaking if he is near.

Also anecdotal but I had some really good drop luck coming here 3 sought after high level greens that pulled in just over 100G on AH for all of them.
