There is no "big blue X" as the quest text says there should be. There IS a light blue circle that pulses up from the ground at the base of the ramp, IF you watch the spot long enough.
Turn Particle Density up to Ultra long enough to scout out where the drop off is. Having particle density to low resulted in such a long time between visible effects, that I spent 20minutes flying back and forth without seeing it once.

although the Quest says 'blue cross' it currently seems to be a blue ring.

Confirmed, it is not an "X" as the quest states but a circle that kind of phases in & out. Location: 39.2, 64.5

Some of the squadron guys apparently are riding armored Ebon Gryphons.

As others have said, it's a pulsing blue circle with an X in it...sort of. On the ground. Inside the keep area. When you fly down the SI:7 folks will jump off and vanish (rogues).

Or if you're like me, the gryphon riders will shout all, "For Kurdran!" and then get shot down about a quarter of a second later. Well, I still completed the quest. :P

One of the gryphon riders says "Let's get this straight: I'm not your taxi service!" or something similar which may be a reference to the Doctor Who episode "The Time of Angles" in which, after showing up to rescue River Song as she jumps out of a ship, the Doctor tells her he's not her taxi service.

I've never understood the point of this quest. You fly them in, and they all immediately get creamed by the ettins. What the heck?

The Wildhammer are being kind enough to give us a lift in. The agents have some things that they need to do down in the Twilight Gate area first, though.

Speak with Angus Stillmountain and get yourself a squad to drop off. You'll fly them in. A big blue X marks the spot.]
