Go to the town square at Darrowshire (34.9, 83.9) and place your Relic Bundle.
NPC's will appear just around the outskirts of Darrowshire - help them fight the hostile mobs.
Make sure Davil Lightfire does not die (if you help him kill the mobs this shouldn't be a problem at all).
After some time Horgus will appear - kill him with the help from the NPC's.
Now protect Captain Redpath. Again, this should not be a problem with the help from the NPC's.
Redpath will eventually turn evil. Time to DESTROY him.. or just kill him even.
Hurray - you are victorious. Go to the town square and talk to Redpath. It may take some time before you can actually talk to him - be patient.
Turn the quest in at Pamela Redpath - she is in the western part of Darrowshire.

One note: Do NOT kill Horgus until Davil interacts with him.

I tried this again after a server restart, but because I killed Horgus when he showed up (being 80), he and Davil did not interact as intended. Eventually Davil just despawned, bugging the event.

Don't 1 shot Horgus until after you see the interaction emotes "Horgus, your nightmare ends," or it will bug.

"The event for "The Battle for Darrowshire" properly resets after a failed attempt and the Relic Bundle will correctly trigger the event again after a failed attempt." (Source)

After seeing this blue post I went there to test it out and worked 100% for me. Yay achievements.

Captain Redpath mysteriously disappeared in the middle of my attempt. He didn't die, and the mobs just kept spawning on both sides.

Also, the /rw that pops up when the event starts tells you to help "Joseph Carlin's" troops.

Note to those concerned and sad:

Joseph still interacts with Pamela after you turn the quest in. The difference is instead of being on a timer, you just have to run out and speak with him in order to start the event. It hasn't been removed.

It is interesting to note that if you happen to come into Darrowshire while someone else is doing the event, you can get credit for the event without grouping. I ran into the square and a high level player was almost all the way through the event. I got there just as Redpath appeared. The other player completed the event and then I was able talk to Redpath in the square to get credit for the quest. I got lucky.

Bugged on the blackhand server for me as of January 3rd was doing it and suddenly redpath despawned and it told me he died, all the npc's kept fighting and spawning.

After the captain gets corrupted and u kill him run to the town square. He will appear regardless if Horgus interacted with him. Just make sure you are in the town square quickly.

I eventually got done with this, but had to do this about 3-4 times - so, I started by targeting Lightfire - don't get caught up in killing all the mobs - just help Lightfire kill a few - then Horgus will appear letting the NPC's gather around him - then killed Horgus - it took a little big for Redpath to appear - then I highlighted him and stayed by him helping him kill a few - but, when he turned evil it was a little higher on the road and since my camera was zoomed out - I could see the evil Redpath - quickly killed him and was able to complete the quest.

Tried this quest today on Cenarion Circle. First time I killed Horgus too fast, Davil eventually despawned, Captain Redpath appeared and after a while eventually died spontaneously. I was at a loss until I came here and read other people's solutions. So I let the NPC's die, waited until they all despawned and tried again. This time I let Horgus and Davil talk, then killed him. Things seemed to be better (Davil had the proper "I can't go on!" dialogue and died), but then Captain Redpath died spontaneously again. I don't know what to do.

Edit: I tried again and succeeded. Give Davil enough time with Horgus while still making sure he doesn't die. It glitched a little, he shouted "The nightmare ends here!" after Horgus was dead, but Davil died right after, then Captain Redpath appeared on the field with the proper raid warning. He was corrupted and all worked well. So I'd say if Davil doesn't die right away after Horgus in the scripted event, your quest is probably bugged.

Confirmed to be buggy at times.

Attempt 1;
Davil never spawned. Eventually, Horgus spawned, but with no Davil and the NPC's busy fighting other NPC's I died a total of 2 times. The NPC's all despawned while I was waiting for the resstimer to let me ress.

Attempt 2;
Davil spawns but Horgus didn't. I logged off to go work.

Attempt 3;
Davil spawns. Horgus spawns. So far so good. Horgus dies. Scripted event happens as normal. Going well. Redpath joins the fray and... spontaneously dies with no warning and wasn't even in combat, preventing the quest from continuing.

As I write this, the NPC's continue to battle... oh wait, they JUST despawned...
Going in for attempt 4 :|

Does anyone else find the quest objective a bit oddly worded? It tells you to "accept Redpath's forgiveness", which is weird because he's apologizing to you and begging you for YOUR forgiveness.

Yes this is STILL bugged, but there is a simple solution as i have just discovered!

1. start the event by placing the Bundle.
2. Once Davil spawns make him your Focus and stick to him like glue ( he is healable, so is Redpath)
3. Let davil start fighting Horgus then join in and nuke him.
4. Captain Redpath will now spawn, focus on him and stick to him like glue! He runs off ALOT so keep a close eye on him.
5. protect redpath until he is corrupted.
6. YAY you win!

like i say, redpath runs off, and if your not looking you loose him and he probabley dies. i found is easy when i set them both as my focus :)

If you are a high level character and the quest bugs, wait for a level 40, you don't have to be in a group.

Interesting note:

As a lvl 40 Rogue, I died trying to kill the mobs. This did NOT end my quest. I just res'd and continued on to achieve completion of the quest. So if you die, do not despair!

I've done this quest on two different toons now.

The first (shaman) had no problems at all. The second (paladin) had Redpath randomly die for no reason on the first attempt, but no problems on the second.

My advice is to have as much AoE uptime over the two NPCs as possible and tank for them. Also, stick to Redpath like glue.

I believe one of my attempts failed because Redpath went to the other side of the town to fight and I stayed where I was. I wasn't "protecting" him, so he died.

For those of you who believe this is still bugged, see the 4.0.3 patch notes. It DOES automatically reset after you lay down a new bundle. I just confirmed this with a GM. However, if for some reason it is still bugged, like it bugged for me, abandon the quest, leave the zone, fly back and pick it up.

Be sure to read the other notes in this thread as well, such as not one-shotting Horgus until his interaction with Davil, sticking to the NPCs like glue, etc.

I just completed this quest a few minutes ago. On my first attempt, Redpath died randomly next to me, while at full health and with no mobs around, awhile after we killed Horus. I tried placing the bag again twice, no joy. Eventually, the NPCs despawned and I placed the bag again, restarting the event. :)

Also, Redpath does go speak to Pamela; he just takes bloody forever standing around in the town square for no reason at all. :/

This is exactly what happened to me with Redpath. There were no mobs around him. He suddenly had the stunned animation over his head and then he died. You have to make sure Davil interacts with Horgus or the event won't progress as intended. The first time where Redpath died unexpectedly, I killed Horgus immediately without Davil yelling at him. The second attempt which worked, I let Davil run around like an idiot until he yelled at Horgus, then I attacked Horgus. Redpath turned evil and the event worked.

It helps to put raid icons on Davil, Redpath and Horgus as they spawn so you can easily see them.

If you happen to die while fighting Redpath the Corrupted, no worries. Even if he does die while you are still in the spirit graveyard, you will still receive credit for killing Redpath.

If you are prone to glitches (like myself) this quest is NOT as easy as it sounds at first. I read all the comments here and tried everything, doing this quest way more times than I care to admit. Learn from my mistakes.

First, placement. As you enter the town, there's a hill to your left. STAND THERE and face the town. Especially if you are at-level and/or alone, place yourself in the middle of the hill and don't move.

Second, don't be a hero. Let the NPCs do the work and don't attack anything (after all, THEY are the heroes of this battle). All the important NPCs will spawn from the well in the center of town and run down the road a little towards you. Target them, right-click on the portrait and set them as your focus. Anything they attack (this is assuming you have the target-of-target display option on), you can go ahead and attack. You can move around on the hill slightly, but do NOT run off. That way, you won't aggro any of the elite mobs that spawn down the road to your right (as you face town).

Third, pay attention. Chromie sent you there to watch the battle, so do it. Keep the hero targeted, and let them start every fight before you 'help' from the shadows. Like many others have said, LET DAVIL AGGRO HORGUS. He's not going to die in one hit, so seriously let them duke it out a bit. The one drawback of the hill position is you can't see the text they say to each other, but after doing this a ton of times and having it glitched, I just wanted this to be over, and I'm sure others feel the same.

Anyway, once Davil aggros Horgus, go ahead and finish him off. Davil will die, then Redpath spawns. Again, DON'T TOUCH ANYTHING HE HASN'T TOUCHED FIRST. Seriously. It might take a few minutes, but the beauty of this plan is the corrupted Redpath spawns literally at your feet (at the base of the hill you're on). Using the "don't touch it until they've hit it first" way I've described here is the ONLY way I have been able to complete this quest so far (since Cata) without Redpath pulling one of several disappearing acts. As soon as the corrupted Redpath spawns, NUKE HIM then run over to the well at the center of town as all the NPCs despawn. Talk to the spirit, and thank the Light you've finally completed the quest without glitches.

TL;DR -
1. Stay on top of the hill to your left as you enter town (the last hill)
2. Only attack what the MAIN quest npcs have attacked first (as long as you can do so from the hill)
3. Seriously, stay on the hill and let the NPCs fight
4. Kill the corrupted Redpath when he appears.
5. ?Spirit by the well?
6. Profit! - and tea

After Joseph walks to his house to talk to his little girl, Pamela, this is what transpires:

Joseph: Pamela? Are you there, honey?

Pamela: Daddy!

Pamela: Daddy! You're back!

Pamela: Let's go play! No, tell me a story, Daddy! No... let's go pick flowers! And play tea time! I found my dollie, did I tell you?

Joseph: Hahah!

Pamela: I missed you so much, Daddy!

Joseph: I missed you too, honey. And I'm finally home...

This is a great ending to a very sad story.

Another issue that can happen to the glitch-prone - Davil suddenly dying for no reason one can discern after calling Horgus out. I haven't the faintest idea what happened; there's no clue in my combat log either. One moment I was defending him and he was at max HP, the next he face-planted. Horgus also failed to show up anywhere.

Edit to clarify: I know Davil is supposed to snuff it at some point after challenging Horgus; he only needs to stay on his feet for that long and to smack Horg around a little, according to plot. But I'm talking, "COME AT ME BRO *immediately die, leaving me blinking in confusion*."

Also 'Horgus' no longer looks like a collection of letters that makes any sense in this reality.

OK, this has changed somewhat at least as of 4.3. Redpath gets one-shotted by some guy on a black horse. After that, Redpath will reappear further up the path where all of the bad guys are coming from. He just sits there watching and (I assume) spawning the bad guys. You need to kill him.

He's technically an elite, but he really doesn't have a lot of hit points and he does NOT fight back (at least against ranged spells, which is the only character I've done this successfully on). However, the bad guys he spawns DO fight back for him and they will probably attack you. Once Redpath is dead, though, the event ends immediately, and whatever is attacking you despawns.

This is the only way that I've found that successfully completes the quest. Redpath's spirit then spawns near the well and you can talk to him to accept his forgiveness as usual.

Having spent nearly an hour tearing my hair out over this, I hope this helps some of you!

I got the strangest glitch with this one.

Over and over again, I'd do the same thing. Use the relic bundle, fight mobs and protect the NPC's I'm supposed to protect. Then, a big nasty one comes out of nowhere and one-shot's Redpath. I waited and waited and waited for corrupted Redpath to show up and he never did, so I'd just use the relic bundle again and again and do it more times than I'd like to count. I had finally given up on this one, mounted up and rode up the hill to (reluctantly) skip it when, there it is: Corrupted Redpath is just standing there at the top of the hill. No wonder he never spawned at the bottom: HE WASN'T MOVING AT ALL! This made it really easy to fight him since he still wouldn't move, but it was a pain in the butt to find him.

Yes, this quest is glitchy. Very glitchy.

Daveyray has it right. Marduk the Black shows up and one shots Redpath. Then the corrupted Redpath spawns on the path. Kill him and the event ends.

Although they kills of all the other mobs don't drop loot they give rep for the Argent Crusade as well as Grisly Trophies for the DMF!

I tried sveral times to do this quest and every time I was with Redpath until:

Marduk the Black says: Redpath! Your life ends, here and now!

...then Redpath despawns and I'm left standing there with a dead Redpath and seemingly no corrupt Redpath to kill. In disgust and out of tiredness from trying so many times I made the decision to head back to Crown Guard Tower, abandon "The Battle for Darrowshire" and continue questing. However on my way heading north along the path back to Crown Guard Tower, there was the corrupt Redpath half way up the hill standing all alone waiting to be slain! So I began to attack him without any retaliation, fulfilling that part of the quest and able to go back to Town Square to be forgiven.

I don't know if this will help anyone or even if this is the way the quest is meant to be and that I'm just a total noob but if this scenario happens to you, walk North up the path and you may find your corrupt Redpath too!

***Edit - Ok I see now the last few posters have confirmed my experience with this quest as of this time. These posts need to be moved up the list I think (which I have voted to do with Rizzatto's post)

Daveyray THANK YOU! I spent so long trying to do what others said but nothing worked. Finally I just watched for the dude on the horse and sure enough he killed him and then I went straight up the path out of town and there he was just standing there. I was able to kill him and he didn't fight back at all. From there it immediately said to meet his spirit, I headed for the well and finally he was there and completed the task.

It looks as if Redpath will get snuffed by Marduk the Black. The first time this happened I didn't see it happen. I waited and waited and finally gave up only to meet the "evil" Redpath high up on the path back to the main road. I attacked him, but apparently the last defenders of Darrowshire were killed when I attacked, as I got Redpath yelling something about them being defeated and everything blinked out.

During the second try, immediately after they had all disappeared, I raid-marked Redpath and saw Marduk ride up to him and instantly kill Redpath near the town center. When I checked up the road the "evil" Redpath was standing there like a pillar of salt and allowed himself to be defeated without fighting back.

His ghost then spawned at the village center again and I was able to get finish the quest. So it's not flowing smoothly all the time, but at least it seems doable.

Weird bug (at least in my realm) involving this quest. Redpath the Corrupted never appeared until I tried to leave the area (10 minutes after fighting trash for nothing), he was uphill and made no resistance when I attacked him. This is my 2nd toon encountering this bug. Just run up the hill (toward the tower where you picked up the quest) to kill him.

This Quest is bugged and cannot be finished atm (atleast on Ravencrest) The corrupted just despawns before you can even attack him.

Meyo's post very much confirmed. I did accidentally pull a bloodletter, but outran him as a druid in travel form. Otherwise, just stand on a hill somewhere out of the way, and you don't even have to help a bit if you don't want to. . . Let things happen, get Redpath the Corrupted when he comes up, and you're good to go. :)

Confirmed on July 12, 2012 patch 4.3 that this can be completed with Captain Redpath dead. He died midway through the fight, but the Corrupted Redpath spawned like normal. He stood - unmoving but not evading - at the entrance to Darrowshire. Just ran up, killed him, and Joseph Redpath was there at the well to end the quest.

Okay, this quest gave me some trouble (Redpath, where are you! ) But once I understood what was happening it was easy.

1: Protect Davil Lightfire until Horgus spawns (Davil dies instantly when Horgus spawns)
2: Kill Horgus
3: Protect Captain Redpath until Marduk the Black spawns (and kills Redpath on the spot, Marduk then despawns)
4: Run up the road a little but... Redpath the Corrupted doesn't seem to run into the battle. (try "/tar Redpath the Corrupted" if you have track target on)

One thing that most comments forget to tell you is that if you don't move up the path, past the fighting at the end, you will never find the corrupted Redpath to kill. No idea why they don't just let him spawn down where everyone is but.......after killing him, return back to the middle of town to end quest.

Is this quest bugged AGAIN? >.< I killed the corrupted Redpath and someone said Redpath is dead, then nothing. No other Redpath appears to talk to and everyone disappears. Colossal waste of time.
