What I did (once I recovered from the shock of realizing that the event starts as soon as you accept the quest) was start at the center mortar (the one pointing out into the bay). As soon as the mortars became usable (which takes a couple of moments after Tethyr is in position), I hit the one I was standing at and immediately started running between all three, stopping only long enough to fire each one. The major says to keep moving for a reason -- as soon as each shot lands, Tethyr hits you with a water bolt that knocks you back a good 10-15 yards (I wasn't paying enough attention to see if it also did damage, though). Particularly as you're heading out to either of the side cannons, you'll want to be aware of where you're getting knocked to so you don't lose too much time getting back on course.

I cleared this on my first try with 4/12 marksmen remaining. Good luck!

Just a couple extra points:

The knockback actually is a bit farther than 10-15 yrds; It's more like 30. If you're lucky, you'll hit something in the way, and not go too far.

The marksmen can also be healed, which made it extremely easy as a Priest. I just ran to a canon, fired it, and tossed a renew at every marksman as I passed them. Only lost 1 by the end of it (mainly because I never stopped to heal them, only used renews).

This is a level 36 quest that can be done solo.

If you get blown off the dock, you fail.

I was doing this quest in a group with one other, and I fell in to the water was blown off the dock, and it failed. When we tried again, I died and it failed. Then I couldnt pick it up again, the other person in my group couldnt share it, she dropped it, and neither of us could pick it up. Everyone remained in position, it kept raining, we waited several minutes and gave up . .. .bugged maybe?

The easiest way to do this is just to go to one of the cannons on the side, wait for him to be targetable and then just right-click the cannon, run to the middle, use it, run to the far side, use it, and then reverse. You need to hit about 10-11 mortar hits on him, but all mortars hit and have no casting time so can be used on the run. As long as you keep running you'll be fine.

Level 70 can solo him melee :P I just used healing gear as enhancement, wrath of air, searing and mana totem. He hits 120 melee and 400 waterbolts so it's not a problem to solo him, only 150k health too. ;D

But I would like to point out that when you don't use the cannons it seems to bug. :P

It is easy to avoid getting knocked off the pier!

The knockback move happens when a large, blue beam comes from tethyr's mouth, that beam knock you back.

When you're doing this quest, always watch Tethyr, when the beam appears, make sure you get knocked back into Theramore, then you won't fail the quest.

I found the best way to keep from getting knocked back is stay in front of the cannons not on the warf when you shot the middle cannon and you wont get damaged or knocked back at all. When after you shot the sides hurry and drop down to the front of the warf towards the center cannon. Hope this helps you, I did it on the first try. with many help from the other posts.

Tethyr never even hit me with his spray/knockback move. Shamans in Ghost Wolf form or Hunters with Aspect of the Cheeetah just need to run from one to the next. I started at the cannon on the left facing the bay and started running as soon as the cog appeared. Never stopped moving and thus as each mortar hit tethyr and he turned to attack a marksman in that direction i was almost to the next one. The key is to not stop at all, you can hit the mortar as you pass by.

Druids can speed between the cannons in travel form - 'using' a cannon does not shift you back to caster form.

Tethyr is the same model as The Lurker Below in SSC. His water bolt is similar to Lurker's spout...except the water bolt does no damage.

All you have to do is just click the cannon and than run to the one beside it and click it until he is dead, very ez quest didn't even lose a hp and had 11/12 marksmen at the end just don't jump when his blue shit hits you

I did it as a 33 mage with ease, what I did was once he hit me with the water bolt I quickly used blink and it would pretty much put me right back on course, i was never knocked off the dock!

Easily done as a shaman. Clicking the mortars does not cancel ghost wolf, basically all you have to do is run back and forth clicking mortars as you go by.

Word to the wise - If you don't use any skills on him, he won't have you on his "target" list. He'll still water blast you and all that good stuff, but he won't use a water ball on you unless you've tried to, or have hit him once or twice. At least that's what I've seen.

I can't remember doing a quest that was this much fun! Easy, but still loads of fun, even if someone else is doing the quest and you just happen to be watching. First found out about this when I tried to turn in https://www.wowhead.com/cata/quest=11193) near the docks, next thing I know a blast of water knocks me clear into the middle of Theramore's marketplace! I turn around to see Thetyr swimming in the harbour, blasting people off the peer. Definately worth your time to do this quest, the fun factor alone is reason enough, and the quest rewards are okay.

Thanks for the tips! As soon as I'd accepted the quest i put my aspect of the cheetah on, went to the left cannon and then clicked it as soon as it was available and just ran round the whole pier again and again clicking the cannons as I passed! Finished with 10 / 12 men alive! Brilliant quest! Very cool!

Easy as a druid, just use travel form, i got knocked back in the beggingin, and that was the only time. 9 marksmen left when i completed it. Very easy, good xp!

On a prot Pali what I did was ran back and forth between the one in the middle and the one on the left. I did fall in the water one but didn't fail. I watched his pattern and when I got hit he tossed me into a box or a towards the tower. Mostly if I was getting too anxious going to the next cannon would get hit.

There is one spot (I forget where, sorry) where the beam dips down and you can run over it.

At the end I had some ally helping..or watching in ready stance if they were melee.

I KNOW! Lowbie Ally helping?! Or maybe they figured phat lootz if they got the killing blow.

Also, one thing that is quite stinky is that,
1. If you fail you have to wait a while for the quest giver to respawn.
2. If you fail tethyr hes still there, and if you dont have anyone over 50 there it gets painfully hard depending on how much health he has left. Since hes a ?? Boss Elite big fish thingy :P.

If you fail this quest and pick it up again, the game will bug. I failed the quest, picked it up again and the rain started. Every marksmen got in position, but Tethyr did not show up. I waited for 15 min for Tethyr to appear, but there was no sign of the beast.

Extremely anoying!!
For me; it resulted in abondoning the quest.

Same here. This quest needs a serious fix.
The problem already starts at the beginning of the quest. Since you don't do direct damage to the mob, it doesn't count as a tag. So even if a low lvl player comes in at the very last point, hitting the mob with a direct spell/attack, he will be tagged by that player. Resulting in you failing the quest, because it wasn't your kill.
Second... being at the docks, where ships come in and out the posibility to get this quest failed by someone tagging it is extremely high.
Third. You can't just fail the quest, and retake it. Like the previous poster already explained. The beast just won't show up.
Meaning you have to abandon it manualy and retake it when the NPC is respawned.
Ofcourse this direclty brings ya back to the first point, the posibility of someone else 'stealing' the kill...

Sure it's a nice quest, the idea with the mortars and making Theramore a bit more exciting is excellent. Too bad it's quite a waste of time on most populated realms, as you never get to finish it, unless ya set ur real life clock to ring you out of bed at 4 Am.

Another interesting thing with this Monster is that when you attack it direcly, it doesn't count as being in Combat. Like with all other mobs. So you can still mount up and run away if you wish to.

If you fail, Major Mills is not around to pick up the quest again. If you leave the dock area and come back, he'll be back there right away.

Remember: the mob fires waterblast always against the clock rotation along the dock. Start left, then middle, and wait for passing blast, go back to left, middle, wait again...
Right cannon is more risky because i have blasted off there once time.
Running around with Ghost wolf is no problem.

But use only middle cannon is okay because there is wall behind you, so the quest cannot fail.

Indeed incredibly easy quest.

Head to the first canon (middle) first, then launch it. Head then to either of the other canons and
repeat this. Notice: Each canon has a cooldown on it. And thats pretty much it. Fun quest overall.

really easy xp. The helm is nice, but it's not something to drool over. You don't get any XP for Tethyr himself, but it's still a nice chunk at quest turn-in.

I couldn't stop laughing..there was a horde player in the water when I start this..he got kill 4x times..every time he would try and swim away..dead,dead,dead...dead..HAHAHA
I finish the quest..and some of the other players on the dock..said what quest was that!!

Probably one of the most fun quests I've done in the game so far. Not too hard, either. Actually, I didn't find it to be hard at all.

Basically, once you start the quest, Tethyr will appear after a few seconds and do a circle around the bit of land that's in between the docks you're going to be using. A little after the start of the second circle, you'll be able to fire the mortars at Tethyr. So basically, I just started at the center mortar, fired it, and then took off to the one on the left, then back to the center, then to the right, and so on and so forth.

The mortars don't have a "cast" time to use, so you don't even have to stop -- and you probably won't want to. The knockback is annoying, but if you don't stop at all there's a chance you might be able to avoid it completely. I wasn't able to test that theory, though, because I didn't realize that you didn't have to stop to use the mortars until Tethyr was almost dead.

i have done this quest a few times, and as of 2.4 it seems, his knockbacks are no more than 5 yards when previously the have been confirmed to be at least 20 yards, probably more. anybody else notice this?

I never got to do this on my first 70, skipping most of the Theramore quests. I was sure to go back and do it while leveling my Mage. What fun!!! And having blink made it easier to get to each mortar. Good exp and a very entertaining event.

Note: If you fail and are forced to abandon the quest, Major Mills will respawn in about 10 minutes. Just wait for him at the center mortar.

one of the most epic boss fights id say for low levels.. reminds me a lot of the popular Banjo Kazooie bosses, running around using other things to kill the boss, while also being vulnerable to being knocked off an area to keep you from killing him.

Done as a 35 druid, stayed in travel form the whole time and just right-clicked the cannons as I ran by. You don't get shifted out and you don't have to stop to shoot the cannons. Just keep running. Easy.

well if u want to avoid getting knocked back, just stand on the sand in front of the middle cannon and simply fire it as soon as it gets possible.. I didnt take any damage AT ALL doing this since the damage comes from being thrown into things, and it works just using the middle cannon coz I had 1 marksman left when i killed him (didnt use any ranged weapon either)

Very easy, especially as a hunter. His water knockback does no damage and doesnt interrupt Cheetah. I just ran back and forth between the center mortar and the one to the left if facing Thetyr. Dont even have to stop at the mortars, just right click on run by.

Three person group - 1 on each mortar. You have to wait between each use for just a couple of seconds. We nailed the monster in no time at all and got a big celebration to reward us. One of the best parts of the quest is seeing whoever else is in town come down to the docks to watch your fight.

Practically, this quest is one piece of cake.

When I first started it I was like "OMG! I have to take down a level ? Boss?"
When then I realized that this quest became really easy, due to the help of the cannons.

When the quest is accepted, 12 marksmen will run out of the Tower near Major Mills. They will line up in different posts.
Once Major Mills yells the signal to attack, the marksmen will fire their arrows, and the battle begins.
Marksmens' arrows won't do so much damage, but you will, with the help of the cannons in the area. This is all you need to take down Tethyr. All you have to do is run from cannon to cannon, just right click them and a cannonball will be fired at Tethyr.

Here's so tips, and some dos and donts.

1.If you're a priest, you can heal the marksmen, to prevent their death.If all 12 marksmen die, Tethyr will go straight for you, and hurl a Water Bolt at you, which can possibly kill you.
2.If you're a Rouge, you could Sprint from 1 cannon to the other, speeding the process up.
3. If you're a Druid, use Travel form, activating the cannons will not break your form.
4.If you're none of the above, use your mount, it's the closest thing to sprint.
5.If all 12 marksmen die, RUN. However, your quest will be a failure, and you will have to restart it.
6. Now I've seen some stupid people run away just when they see Tethyr, and everyone ends up suffering, so please, don't run away, cannons will save you.
7. Tethyr can blow a water spout at you, hurling you to about 15 yards. If you get blown away off the dock, the quest fails.

After Tethyr is defeated, Major Mills will yell the victory, and fireworks will be blown over Theramore Isle.

I love this quest. I just did it as a level 36 and it is by far my favorite quest of the game. The rewards rock too. Do not pass this quest up. Don't forget it starts with just collecting thrasher oil to fix the lighthouse.

Very very easy. Don't bother attacking just use the mortars. Just run back and forth. Solo on 36 Warrior. Don't attack him using weapons just use the mortars that's why they are there.

ok this quest is so simple if done right if u have a pally or priest. i did the almost the whole quest line solo at lvl 30. (i has some help on the part where u have to kill the shark). anyway, all u do is run around activating the cannons, healing the marksmen. i thought it would be way hard and went around asking for help, then said what the heck why not just try it and cleared the quest with 10/12 marksman remaining...very easy and u get a sweet helm (or other items) after u do it, and 4400 xp haha

okay... okay... i am a 31 nelf hunter... and i just beat Tethyr WITHOUT GETTING HIT OR LOSING ANYONE! the best thing to do is to turn on aspect of the cheetah, then once he is in position, hit him with the middle mortar. then move over to the right mortar, then back to the middle, then left, middle, right, middle, and so on until he is dead... hope this helps!

This quest begins Immediately after you hit the accept button. I won't bog down the comments repeating what has already been said. I will point out a few things for the n00b's like me. This one was rather simple although there are a few things you should note:

The 'mortars' are the blue things with yellow rims along the dock (they look almost like frogs from the side). Took me a second to figure that out. If you have any speed enhancing spells or abilities, enable them either before (If its not a spell that wares off like Aspect of the Cheetah) or once he shows up. You can only use a mortar once every 15 seconds or so, so run back and forth from each one. As a hunter your pet will not attack Tethyr, so don't worry about him/her dying. Tethyr's primary targets are going to be the marksman. You should be able to pull this off without a problem even if you don't have speed enhancing capabilities, just don't attack Tethyr with anything but the mortars and keep moving.

On a side note this quest was SO worth it. So far this is the coolest quest I have been on in WoW (This is my first character).

Edit: I loved this quest so much I went back and did it on my Death Knight. Again very simple quest, however this time I decided (since I am a 69 DK now) to fight him melee. If you have good gear you can get the job done. He has > 100k health, so it won't be a short fight. He also packs a hard punch. Blow for blow he did about as much damage to me as I did to him. The Water Bolt hit me anywhere from 381-432 Frost damage each hit, which was about as much as my Icy Touch did to him. His Melee swings hit me for about 200 each. A level 60 should be able to melee him easily. The hardest part of this fight was keeping Tethyr's from attacking the marksmen. I constantly had to use Dark Command and Death Grip to keep his focus on me, and at the end I only had 4 marksmen left. In all the quest line took about 15 minutes to complete. The final fight lasted about 5 minutes, and once again, it was worth it.

This is a very fun and cool quest. Easy yes... but a wonderful reward after having to fight that shark. I watched another player finish it as I was coming off the boat from Menethil to Theramore. I had no idea what quest it was, but it looked so cool that I had to do it. The entire quest line didn't take that long (maybe an hour) and you get a nice little reward at the end, both in item form, and in cool visual form!

As said before, just run from cannon to cannon and never stop moving. As a hunter i used Aspect of the cheetah and his attacks did not daze me. I was also never hit for any damage or knocked back in any way, even though I ran right through the water bolts.

This was easy i did it with a lvl 34 and had 12/12 marksmen left. He may look hard but he is weak and his attacks are easy to avoid. Watch out thoughthe quest starts as soon as you accept it.

After reading the comments below, I was terrified of this quest. However, it proved to be a breeze with lvl 35 druid. I simply stayed in my travel form to run between the mortars. I was never blown off of the dock and didn't lose a single marksman. The whole thing was done in 2 minutes. Woot!

The quest is is really easy yes there is a ? boss, however, dont panic. all i did was go to the cannon right next to the guy u get the quest from and any time the little wheel popped up i used it. and oh stay behind the cannon unless u wanna be blown 10-15 yards.

Absolutely one of the best classic quests. Definitely a prelude to many more interactive quests introduced in Wrath of the Lich King. I wonder if they considered adding an achievement to complete this quest without losing any Marksmen. The achievement would be disqualified If anyone else damaged Tethyr or anyone else healed a Marksman.

Zooming full out gives you the best perspective of all the action going on. This quest got me completely by surprise in leveling my alt Priest and made me happy!

I just completed this quest two minutes ago on my druid. Best. Quest. Ever. Blizz needs to make more quests like this that aren't just "Kill some of such and such" or "Go talk to this guy!". It was great fun, and I'll be sure to do it again on my other characters.

I've got to agree... this was a short, enjoyable quest, very different from most of the quests you receive. It's a nice break and end to the 7-quest series. Hoewever, it does seem that they have gimped poor Tethyr when I compare the earliest comments compared to my experience.

I finished with 11 marksmen left out of 12, and never even got hit by the water 'ray'. Guess I was just lucky in starting from the left side and moving to middle, then right, and then back. But even once before when I was watching this happen (and took the opportunity to level my newly acquired crossbow skill), I only got hit by the ray once and knocked back maybe 5 feet. It's not necessary to mount between each cannon. I just ran from each once with my lvl 35 warrior.

There's plenty of time! I didn't realize the quest had started and actually came here, read all the posts went back and did it. Ok, so only 2 marksmen survived, but if I could read all this and still do it then there is more than enough time! Pally's you can heal the marksmen, too! Fire a cannon, heal the marksmen as you go by them, fire the next cannon. Plenty of time.

watch out. just tried this quest. was not able to *target* tethyr nor was I able to use *any* of the morters even though they sparkled. Also, during the "fish bait test" the fish does not always come. Literally came to wowhead to figure out what 'trick' I needed to do, since I was not able to do anything but watch as tethyr failed me and the quest giver despawned.

I don't know if it was nerfed or what but just did this quest and not only did I not have to use any cannons but it's Water Blast attack seemed to go right through me and did absolutely nothing; in fact it didn't seem to do anything except look menacing and spit water, but didn't bother attacking at all and went down very quickly. Awesome fight just because of the "Godzilla" type feel to it.

Seems like they have taken out his knock-back effect. Just completed this on my young warrior, and though she got caught in the water spray many times, she was never thrown like my previous alts had been.

I just did this quest today - Blizzard may have told you it is obsolete but it is still obtainable - you get a quest to go out to the Lighthouse, she gives you a book, you go see Nat Pagle and do some stuff for him then you go in to the docks and get the quest from Major Mills. And it is very doable with some nice rewards still. Healing the marksmen helps complete the quest & I didn't get knocked off the pier by the water spout.

Ok for Druids here is a easy way to do it and not lose anyone.
Stay in travel form,
Then hit the first cannon, then go to the right one then run back to the middle then the left.
the 2 marksmen by the middle cannon will lose health the fastest, just throw rejuv on them as ya run by and get back into travel.

for all others do the same but remember DONT STOP.
as ya run by the cannon, just click on it and turn around and run back.
no need to stop or watch the show, just keep moving or tethyr will shoot ya with a water blast that sends ya 30 yard back, maybe even to your death.

Another thing to remember is, not only how many archers you have, but also where you are. If you are blasted off of the docks and into the water, it is a failed mission. If you go too far away from the fighting area, it is a failed mission. I failed a couple times due to the water blast. I also failed once because I walked to the very edge of the western dock and was too far away from the mortars.

The comment about getting thrown against the wall above is very helpful. In order to accomplish this you will have to click the cannons in a very specific order.

Tethir will hit you about every 2nd cannon you click beginning after the first. To drop him without incident, number the cannons as follows:
1 - To the left of the Quest Giver (facing the bay).
2 - In front of the Quest Giver (facing the bay).
3 - To the right of the Quest Giver (facing the bay).

Hit the cannons in this order:
3-2-1-2-3-2

That's it. He'll knock you back against the wall as you try to hit cannon #2, and maybe just after it. If you keep moving, he'll go down after shot #6.

Just did it.

It appears that there is no particular order that the cannons must be fired in--any cannon is available for you to use at any time. However, there is a cooldown on each cannon that prevents you from spam-clicking it, forcing you to either stay near one cannon and defend it until the cooldown is up, or to move between two or all three cannons.

When Tethyr first appears, the cannons will begin to sparkle, however, all of them will effectively be on cooldown (you can't click on them) until Tethyr swims around in the docks for half a minute or so while the marksmen get ready.

Standing on the left-most dock facing the bay for an extended period of time is a surefire way of getting knocked into the water behind you, which consumes time and generally eats more marksmen.

Tethyr has ~ 125000 health, and each cannon shot takes out roughly 10% of his health. It is exactly like a raid boss in that its level is hidden to all players, and, for the purposes of hit/miss/resist/etc., should be treated as your own level +3.

You can go into the water and damage it with regular attacks because of this, or snipe from range, but going by this method you'll pretty much fail the quest as all the marksmen will eventually be wiped out, leaving you, a spanking level 30ish, to tank and dps a 125000 health boss.

Use the cannons. Unless you're raiding it with 70s for fun.

Oh, and also, he is limited to two abilities: Water Bolt and a form of AoE knockback that interrupts spellcasts. His knockback spell can be predicted and avoided (you can tell where the spray is going to go from the graphics.)

His Water Bolt seems to only target marksmen, and is a single target spell that takes out ~30% of a marksman's health each time it hits. He usually hits a marksman for two water bolts. His knockback ability does no damage to you--unknown whether it does damage to the marksmen.

He does not engage in melee combat unless you tank him down.

First of all this is the best quest I've ever done in my whole WoW time. Though the rewards didn't work quite well for me, got about 5g for disenchanting the helm and selling the stuff on AH.

Here's what I did as a 34 shammy.

Accept quest and cast Ghost Wolf. Then go to the barrel on the west side of the dock. As soon as the commander yells FIRE AT WILL! click on the barrel and start running to the one north. Right-click it without stopping and go to the one east. Click it and get back to the north one, it should be ready by then, then go back to the west. Repeat all that about 5 times and you should have Tethyr down in about 1 minute and without Marksmen loss.

I did this quest on my first try with 9 out of 12 marksman still living.This quest is fun and so are all of the quests leading up to this one. When i di this quest i sort of just randomly clicked the cannons til he was dead a truly fun quest.

My buddy complete this quest with my help (healing) and he had 11 out of the 12 marksman left.

OK, here's something that is probably news. Did you know that it IS possible to help someone on this quest. No, you cannot shoot Tethyr. He has so many Health points and so much armor, it is a waste of time. He will kill all the archers before you can take him down. No, you cannot fire the cannons; only ther person on the quest can do that.

But here is something that I found out while doing the escort quest for the Defias Traitor in Westfall; you can heal the NPCs! Yep, even though the only person who can fire the cannons is the person on the quest, there is no restriction on bandaging the marksmen. I ran from one archer to the next, checking their health. When one of them was getting low, I threw a Silk Bandage on them. Guess what? They got better! I managed to save four archers and the player on the quest succeeded the very first time.

I did this quest as a lvl 44 warlock. The strategy I used was similar to the 3-2-1-2-3-2-1 pattern.

But when your walking around the dock to each of the cannons, go onto the ground, in front of the dock, so when he does his knock-back spell you'll just be immobilized for a second against the dock, then you can start running to the cannons again.

My advice, do not go onto the docks over the water when he is doing the knock-back spell, I failed this quest on a dif character many times in a row because of that, lol!

No need to waste time running round the different cannons - you can easily complete the quest by using only the middle one! The advantage of this one is if you get blown back it is only as far as the wall and easy to get back to. I have solo'd this one several times now with different characters so it definitely works!

I did this as Lvl 37 resto druid, and, as heard in earlier comments, this is one of the funnest WoW quests ive ever done, the others include a couple of mystery chain quest things, and i think the water blast bit was great, it was moving sideways slowly enough for me to get into travel form and run at the same speed it was sideway-comign at, so i could just run by cannons, firing them, avoiding the blast, and also, you might want to try this if you kkeep getting hit, try be near a pillar or something to break your stop you falling off the edge, when he shoots his water blast, and, if you have healing spells, use them on the marksmen every chance you get, make sure as few as possible die, i completed the quest on my first try.

I failed this part... at the docks w/ Tethyr and deleted Q..("Is it Real") Can't find anyone in the past history to give the Q back to me.. Went back to Lighthouse..Back to Fish Bait guy etc.. Any ideas..? Thanks

When I defeated him the quest log says "(complete)" and when I went to go accept my reward the guy tells me "Take Down Tethyr!, Failed" what do I do?

LVL 36 PRIEST-Holy, my vote went to AD-Baldurin. Follow what he/she says in the order he/she says..ie Quest Giver/ QG's; Left of QG =1, Front of QG = 2, Right of QG = 3. Do the order 3-2-1-2-3-2, hit the geared cursor as it appears as you move by, BUT! keep moving and moving, don't stop and look as the monster dies ( I died, when I stopped)! Interesting quest, that helped me make lvl 37, just do the quest- SHOW NO FEAR!

Haha, I did it on my feral druid at 34, I'm low on RAM so I kept blacking out whenever I ran past 2 cannons, and I still did it, lost 4 archers though. :(

But yeah, for druids the first comment is all you need, stay in travel, middle, left, middle, right, middle and repeat. xD

This quest is impressive. Enough for me to not want to hand it in. I'm going to fail it before the hand in then I can call it up anytime I like. Hey look at me, I can make the sky dark, the lighthouse illuminate and sea monsters appear. How cool is that?

I did it my first time, never got hit, didn't lose a marksmen.

The trick is getting to the canons just in time!

I agree. The quest isn't difficult at all. I did it as a level 38 Hunter and thought I was doing it wrong because nothing seemed to be happening. I never got hit, never got knocked back, and every time I fired the canons it got interrupted. I only lost one marksman and once Tethyr died it said that the quest was completed. I just ran between the middle canon and one of the side ones, no order to the canons needed and there didn't seem to be any hurry. Kind of anti-climactic for me, seeing as it was a boss fight. Easy, but anti-climactic.

This quest gave me a rush! I was so nervous to do it, I ignored it everytime I went to Theramore because there were other players around the area. I didn't want to fail in front of them, lolz! So today I went for it as a lvl 42 night elf druid in travel form. Just accept the quest, run to the left cannon, then middle, then right, etc. Then at the end one player appeared and just stared the scene, boy was that pressure. Lost 2 marksmen but never got hit by any water bolt or anything. Completed the quest at my first try. The xp helped to give me half a bar to get to lvl43. That was better than the actual reward but at least its worth $. Have fun!

I lost two marskmen, but then again I was drunk off my ass at the time from the previous quest's reward. :D I was level 43 at the time and didn't actually find Tethyr to be all that tough - for some reason I never had his water blast attack knock me over. In druid's travel form, I simply ran from one cannon to the next until it was all over.

Ha, I had actually first seen Tethyr enter the harbor not too long beforehand, and while I'd been right there collecting thresher oil of all things - freaked me right out, I thought it must have been the arrival of some once-in-a-lifetime Horde boss just as I was trying to finish some easy quests. Now that person I saw finished without losing a single marksman; then again I aimed a couple shots at the mob out of curiosity. :P A fun quest chain and not so hard as it might seem.

This has been nerfed. I did it many months ago, got knocked over a few times, lost health, lost quite a few marksman. Had to try twice. It was a blast. Did it today with my runty priest. Plodded from one cannon to another, repeat. Lost 1 marksman, never got knocked over, never took any damage. Didn't bother with shield after a short time. I can't imagine how I could have not finished the quest. Why can't Blizzard leave ANY <60 quest with the slightest challenge? No challenge = no fun.

This quest was fun, but really simple.
*keep moving
*fire a cannon, then immediately run to a different one and fire it
*i did not find it necessary to heal the NPC's but u can if u want to

The key is to keep moving. did this as a lvl 36 and didnt take ANY damage at all.

Just run back and forth between all 3 cannons, it takes a while but is really pretty simple.

If you're a hunter like me, turn your cat/pet off as his input won't help at all....i didn't and he dutifully attacked and died.
Just run from one cannon to the next, fire the cannon and run to next cannon, fire it, etc.,
Fired the cannons maybe a dozen times or so, my health never went below 90%, so when Tethyr was down to about 5% I helped the soldiers and pumped a few rounds into him till he went down.
My rule of thumb.....just keep moving; the quest said my job was to fire the cannons, so I did just that and it worked out.

Just an FYI, if you're doing this as a higher level than intended you can just jump in the water and fight him normally, and still get credit for completing the quest.

With a level 36 Hunter, this was easy and entertaining.

I put my pet on passive and parked him out of the way. I then put on Cheetah, ran to Mortar on the right of the quest giver, shot it and then to the one next to him. Once that one was shot, I then ran to the one on the left. I rinsed and repeated between the one next to him and the one to the left approximately six times and Boom...down Tethyr went.

All soldiers were alive and I was never hit once. Lucky! :)

i tried this up to 5 times

the first 2? was when it was summoned by someone else, the other 3? i did myself. on the last turn, i fired the cannons without getting blasted too badly.

get quest, fire cannons, run quickly, piece of cake :)

This was a pretty easy and fun quest, take the advise of concentrating on firing the cannons and do not attack directly. Don't waste any effort on healing the archers or buffing them you don't need too just keep running from cannon to cannon and keep firing. Do not wait at one cannon as it take to long to recharge. I just kept running from one to the other and only got knocked back a couple of times, finished with about 7 archers still standing. Paladin lvl 37 protection spec

Ok for Druids here is a easy way to do it and not lose anyone.
Stay in travel form,
Then hit the first cannon, then go to the right one then run back to the middle then the left.
the 2 marksmen by the middle cannon will lose health the fastest, just throw rejuv on them as ya run by and get back into travel.

for all others do the same but remember DONT STOP.
as ya run by the cannon, just click on it and turn around and run back.
no need to stop or watch the show, just keep moving or tethyr will shoot ya with a water blast that sends ya 30 yard back, maybe even to your death.

the major disappears when u abandon the quest but he comes back in a few moments...i abandoned and realised he disappear and i managed to go to the island to get again from the fisherman and there was nothing...then i came really disapointed and there was the major again ;) ihihi

Just finished the quest tonight. First attempt same as others started on left side and got blown off the dock on the right and failed. Read the posts here and decided to try new tactic.

Aspect of the Cheetah on and started on the right, then middle, left, middle, etc. I used the arrow keys to run and the left mouse to watch him swim around. Only stopped at mortars long enough to hear the pop before running to the next.

Do NOT try to shoot Tethyr with guns and bows or jump in and try to attack. Error message CANNOT ATTACK THIS TARGET. JUst use the action cog on the mortars when he swims in to the dock and completes one lap.

For those of you you actually DO the quest... as opposed to the ones who come upon it and think they did it (see below)... This can be really fun. I've found a few tactics that help... first, if you have the ability, buff the archers as they come out (when I did this as a Druid - first time out, I didn't give out buffs, all archers died and quest failed - second time, I gave them each "Mark of the Wild" and we took him down with nine archers still standing!). Also, when you shoot the cannon, if he's near or facing you, stay directly behind it after you fire... he won't wash you back more than a couple of feet, and you won't get stunned. Otherwise, Fire and RUN to next cannon, and stay behind it until his wash passes over, then fire and run to next gun. (If you're a hunter and get caught in his wash, shoot back a couple of times before going to the next cannon.) For some reason, this reminds me of the "Gamera" movies!

All the advice listed here made this quest a breeze. I can add this to the information since I had a buff counting down I could time the run distance. It's about 11 seconds between mortars not counting knock-back if that happens to you.

Soloed as a 35 Dwarven Rogue.

You should be able to do this quest as a solo with the help of the marksmen. You will need to just keep moving and watch for his water cannon breath. It has a good knock back. If you are working as a group, take a couple of seconds to figure out the rotation you are going to use for the cannons so that you don't end up with more than one on a cannon at a time.

Once we figured this out, the quest was really simple.

Had no idea this was a quest. Got off boat and there was this thing killing a Theramoore guard. So of couse I charged in and flipped to Def Stan. and started hammering away. BOY was I mislead... I was expecting a fight... I've had more trouble fishing in Elwynn Forest than slaying this beastie. I saw it coming, but I was disappointed there wasn't a drop for this creature. It had great shock value and it was fun to face, though.

Great quest here. Very entertaining and fun to do, especially when you see others arriving and don't know about the new quests in the area. :) I started with the right cannon, then to the middle, then left. I then went back and forth between the middle and left cannons. You shouldn't be knocked back into the water this way.

Silly me didn't notice at first. :-|
Stood like a lump next to the one nearest to Major Mills waiting for it to cycle. A couple of seconds into the "fight" I got sent flying and FINALLY noticed the other two. Started running around like a headless chicken, and I almost succeeded anyway. Tethyr killed of the last marksman a fraction of a second before I got off the final shot that would have done for the 1% health he had left... ;-)
Major Mills popped back immediately after I abandoned the failed quest, but I'd decided I'd drowned Theramore in enough murk and lashing rain for the moment.
...and you gotta LOVE the confused people shooting arrows, spells, guns, what have you a Tethyr. Mostly because it reminds me of me 15 or so levels ago.

Aspect of the Pack / of the Cheetah is great for manning the cannons. The quicker you go from cannon to cannon, the quicker you can shoot cannon, the quicker Thethyr dies.

I tried it with my 43 mage and my 40 hunter and it went MUCH quicker with the hunter.

This was the coolest quest I've ever done! I accept quests automatically without reading them, so I wasn't prepared when this quest started automatically; and it failed almost immediately. I abandoned the failed quest, logged off, logged back on, and picked up the quest again. I started at the far left mortar. Then I ran to the middle one and shot it, then to the one on the right, then back to the middle- so forth and so on. I got blown off track a few times (being a mage and being able to blink to make up for lost time helped a lot). I think I finished with 5 marksmen left. It was really neat- I suggest doing this quest if you get the chance. Not for the loot or the XP but just for the fun of it.

I started on right (west) and then middle and left (east) then back and forth between middle-left like a previous poster did. Worked like a charm. My first attempt i tried all 3 cannons and failed miserably. Mainly because I spent more time in the water than actually firing cannons.

I feel L337 now that I have defeated such a large and repugnant creature. YAY me!

Just run from cannon to cannon firing. They will reset by the time you can get back to them. Don't stop to watch or you will fail, just keep running. You will still get credit if other people help as long as it's one of the mortar shots that kills him. You might want to announce, "!Please don't attack the sea monster and screw my quest!". I know I did it and thought I was helping. That person failed the quest but I don't know if my buddy and I had anything to do with it since Tethyr killed all the archers.

The quest line to get to this quest was long and tedious (a lot of swimming), but well worth it.

I failed the actual battle many times - there seems to be a ring around the edge which, if you leave fails it. No need to log out etc if you fail - the guy is on a 3 min respawn timer - just wait for it. Watch out for his water blast move because, although it does no damage, that annoyingly sends you flying outside of the area and thus fails you the quest.
The marksmen seem to be invincible and other than getting knocked back the quest is VERY easy.

Rewards are rubbish as is the xp - but it is honestly the coolest quest ive ever done.

In between running from mortar to mortar, HEAL a couple of the marksmen. It makes them last longer. Then you can pretty much take your own sweet time. If you're a druid or cleric, just cast a RENEW on each as you're running by....

Just did this on my druid, and while there is one druid posting the way he did it , I think this way is even easier. Stay in travel form, as the mob doesn't hit you with knockbacks in this form. Before you can fire on the mob, there is a period of time when the marksmen run out onto the dock. Buff as many as you can with mark of the wild, working from the cannon on the docks you come off the boat from (cannon #3) towards the cannon to far left of the quest giver (cannon #1). Cannon #1 is the first cannon you want to let off. It is also the only time you need to fire this cannon. From there on out, go from the next cannon, the one nearest the quest giver (cannon #2), to the one on the side of the darks where you disembarked (cannon #3). Run back and forth firing cannon 2 and 3 over and over until the mob is dead. Viola, quest complete, and you get a reward you might as well sell, as you can find much better.

Just completed this. If you just go to one cannon and expect to shoot it you will fail. the key is to steadily run from one cannon to the next and fire the cannon. Do not stand still at one cannon because tethyr will kill the guards and you will fail within 10 seconds.

Second most epic quest I have ever done. I sorta did it solo, but other people in Theramore came and attacked Tethyr, but the big guy still shot his knock-back shots at me. First most epic quest I have ever done is 'The Embalmer's Wife' in Duskwood, where it's a race against time to get the Embalmer's Heart before his... 'Pet' Abomination destroys Darkshire. There actually is no timer, but it's pretty cool to imagine the town's fate rests in your hands.

Anyways, on topic, I just ran back and forth between all the mortars, got knocked back a few times, but otherwise, easy.

Don't even bother with the right hand cannon. The first time I started on left, ran center, then ran right and got blown into the water and failed the quest. The second attempt I focused on the left and mid cannons. Had aspect of cheetah on and ran in front of the cannons/dock/boxes/etc, basically stayed in front of anything that would block me if I went flying. It worked rather well :) Finished with 10 markspeople remaining.

ok, i havent actually done this quest but seen many people fail, watching it reminded me of the luker below ficht and his spout, it is possible to run just infront of the the spout and find cover before it gets to you. this could realy help not getting knocked bak

Apparently the quest can bug out if assistance is given. I found this out when someone started yelling foul, albeit censored, language at me.

It would be nice if Tethyr were only attackable for the quester.

Each mortar shot does 10% damage to Tethyr, so it should be very easy to kill him without ever getting hit if you run from one mortar to another. If you hit him when he's below 10%, then the final mortar shot will kill him.

I took my lowest character, a 51 Paladin, and decided to do the new quests, just to check them out. I got to this one and it seems simple enough. On my run to the 3rd mortar, I got knocked back quite a distance. As I started heading back, I was informed that I had failed the quest. I'm assuming it's because I got "too far" from the action. Stupid, especially when Tethyr's attack has a knock-back effect. Just be aware.

I got the quest, ran to the left hand mortar (left as you face out to sea). For a while I couldn't fire the mortar, but eventually the archers all got set and the battle started.

I used aspect of Cheetah. Fired the left mortar. Ran to center one. Ran to right hand mortar. Ran to center one. Etc. just going back and forth from mortar to mortar. Tried to send in pet but that doesn't work nor could I fire arrows. The archers did.

I ran like hell from mortar to mortar and there were 9 archers left alive when the critter died. Goot reward for a hunter.

This seemed easy although I do not know why. I never got hit at all, probably because the instant a mortar fired I was off running to the next one.

Sea monster or no, we're not going to risk the safety of our shipping. I've ordered our best marksmen to prepare for a confrontation with this Tethyr. The artillerymen have augmented the dock's defenses with three mortars.

I'm going to order the lighthouse's lamp illuminated. If Tethyr does attack, it will be your job to operate the mortars and take down the beast before it can kill all of the marksmen. I wouldn't stand in one place too long, though. Using the mortars is likely to draw its attention.
