The plans for these weapons can be found at a blacksmith trainer in Outland. These weapons in particular are unique in that it requires you to acually be a certain weaponsmith type in order to use them, and in the fact that you upgrade these weapons over time. I'm assuming Blizzard had taken into account that many of the craftable weapons you could make as a Blacksmith weren't exacly on par with the gear you could obtain in pvp, or in a raid instance. This will change with these items in particular.

Personally, I think it adds a unique twist to the game, and am looking forward to obtaining this weapon =)

Unfortunately as going enhancement shammy I'm quite disappointed its all unique and mainhand, doesn't worth the effort and being blacksmith for dualwielders.

I would go dualwield https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=23542 for beginning and see what drops could offer instead gimping myself with pain-to-skillup blacksmithing

Assuming it procs 1.4 times per minute like what someone recorded of its Step 1 version, DragonStrike does about 6012.4 dmg/min. (Since the Planar axe gets slightly buffed stats each upgrade, DragonStrike may also have more proc/min than its downgraded version, I do not know)

Wicked Edge of the Planar, however, does about 5988.9 dmg/min.

HOWEVER, since I'm a fury warrior, if I spam my Bloodthirst ability whenever the CD is up, with the AP from Wicked Edge I can do another 212.4 dmg/min, leaving me at a total of 6201.3 dmg/min with the Wicked Edge of the Planar.

The 2nd half also accounted for the +crit on Wicked Edge.

Possible faults with logic:
You don't generate enough rage with Wicked Edge to hit Bloodthirst everytime CD is up.
The proc on DragonStrike allows you to generate more rage, which you CAN use for Bloodthirst whenever CD is up (among other things).
The proc/min on DragonStrike is different than its Step 1 version. This could be possible as the stats on the Planar Axes go up as you upgrade.

Well I'm not sure if this weapon is worth the mats, considering The Decapitator isnt that far behind in DPS. Plus, the Arena 1H-axe weapons are also close enough in stats and they only take about 0.5-1hr per week for about 5-7 weeks to get (super casual like). And that is 2 axes.
Seriously, even when you do manage to get the mats for this final upgrade of the weapon, there will probably be better 1H-axes from new recipes, instance drops, etc. And to take a whole profession slot, BS Axesmith Mastery, to get a weapon or two that arent THAT much better considering how hard to they are to get ... well, upcoming patches should introduce some weapons unique to axecrafters (bop), which should be substantially better than instance/arena weapons. Otherwise one can go Engineering/Alchemy, get the arena axes and definitely have an engineering items edge, rather than the BS Axesmith Mastery which is of no more use in terms of crafting once you get the final weapon (other than to keep wielding the crafted weapons).
To sum up ... I hope blizz beefs up crafters' creations.

It is indeed a great weapon, but the Nether Vortex' only drops in SSC and the eye, at a very low rate. Luckily they nerfed the reagents required to make this, but for more than 1 player in a guild to get this, it will take weeks of raiding. Blizzard should increase drop rate on the Nether Vortex in my opinion.

In my own experience, Nether Vortex drop rate is NOT that low at all.

My Guild just started raiding The Eye and over the course of 2 VR runs, we managed to get 3 people their Tier 3 2handers.

Since then, we see them drop all the time, it almost makes me wish I'd gone Blacksmithing with how easy Tier 3 BS Weapons are to attain these days.

Either we're extremely lucky, or they drop like candy.

Nope ... you're not lucky. The people above are either liers who pretend to know High end content or cursed people. My Guild on Illidan E.U has dropped 39 vortexes in 5 weeks of 4 days raiding (all but Vashj "farmed" in SSC likewise in TK). I personally have been able to craft Dragonstrike and Storm herald (Gatz@Illidan) sucking up 10 vortexes for myself (my DKP suck dick now ...). I would tend to believe the drop rate is under 1% but considering you kill 100-150 mobs in one week (If you reach Vashj) they drop enough to be considered uncommon drops more than rare drops. Adding this to Blizzard's "Nerfing policy" (The hard part isn't dropping Vortexes ... it's killing the mobs if your guild isn't prepared for Very High end content) I believe any "Medium" or above guild will be able to have all the crafts they want and even at some point be able to "sell" vortexes within one or two months depending on the amount of Blacksmiths.

If anyone is interested, I can confirm that the fiery weapon glow on Wicked Edge of the Planes stacks with the weapon glow from the Mongoose enchantment.

I have submitted a screenshot that proves it.

Well as an Orc I would go with this axe as you get a racial bonus with axes as an Orc.

I am switching to BS just to make these. I need a good main hand Axe.

In 2.4.2, It is no longer unique and is changed to one-hand, so you can dual wield two of these.

So for an Orc Shammy who get 5 Expertise when using an Axe, and assuming we can DW this after 2.4.2, does that make this the best Axe in the game?

I know that Rising Tide has slightly higher DPS, but it also has +Hit (which Enh Shammy's don't need), and this has +1.04% crit @lvl 70, so Dual wielding for an Enhancement Shammy should give +2.08%.

Those are great weapons, but I was under the impression that speed was critical for Windfury procs, and speeds slower than 2.6 are considerably better than 2.6 and less.

Anyone tried this with their Orc Shaman?

well..since i haven't been payn any attention to patch notes i missed the changes - - - 2x this baby will rock....but , if you calculate the "Enhancement Shaman" benefits from this weapon...and compare to merciless....they are almost the same in overall dps ( Wicked edge has bigger numbers, bigger burst... ) this baby here coming in at no more than 3% more dps

so... if you can afford 2 of them - GET THEM , if you can't...get the badge fists, vengefull, merciless...you won't be missing a lot of dps...( in the case of merciless....because i think that the BoJ fists might give more dps )

After making 2x Wicked edge of the planes last night (1000+gold later - yeah I didn't farm much) I can definitely say this was a huge upgrade.

I had been farming kara for months and months to get hold of spiteblade to use with just 1x wicked edge (2.7 speed ftw). But now I realise this is a far better setup.

I am a human fury warrior and I put executioner and mongose on each of them.

If you are a orc fury warrior I can definitely say this is without the best weapon setup you can get in the game right now. The dmg on these babies is insane and well worth the material cost. Only bad thing about using these as humans is no expertise, but I aint complaining I finally have my weapons sorted for end game fury :-)

As soon as the last patch came out i made another of these for my Enhanced Troll Shammy to use as duel wield. They do look good with mongoose and i have Windfury on both.

In regards to hit rating. This is a comment from Wowwiki:

Please note: When using dual Windfury, special attacks (Stormstrike and Windfury procs) should account for at least 30% of a Shaman's damage. Since this is hit capped from talents alone, hit rating is less valuable than stats which apply to all damage, such as crit rating, expertise rating and AP. There are raiding Shaman putting out extremely high DPS with hit chances as low as 14%.

Enhance Shaman do not require large amounts of Hit Rating on gear. Effectively, because we can get a large quantity of +Hit from talents (9%), our special attacks (windfury and stormstrike) are already hit capped. When you consider the itemization costs of hit rating compared to crit rating and AP, which directly impact 90% of a shaman's total damage, you can see why hit rating is given lower precedence. Take the talents to hit cap your specials, any hit rating on gear after that is icing on the cake.

Its important to note that Warriors and Combat Rogues benefit from Rage and Energy feedback mechanisms from their white damage, Shaman have no feedback system from white damage. This is another reason why hit is less important to Shaman.

The benefit of +hit for a shaman is pretty much equal to the % hit gained x % damage done by melee attacks, whereas a warrior will gain that +extra rage to use more specials, and a combat rogue will get more offhand hits to gain extra energy to use more specials.

Just so you know, this axe still shows enchants - so if you get a mongoose enchant you get a mix of fiery and mongoose - which in my opinion, is very cool.

I've got an enhance shaman on the way and thought I'd add up the materials for one of these as I plan on making him two (and, as someone mentioned earlier, putting mongoose on both of them for the sick dps and the sick fire/lightning effect :P )

These are the totals I got, after converting all compound items into their base gatherable materials (except primals, it's easy enough to multiply by 10 and determine the required motes), please correct me if I missed something:

Nether Vortex x5
Primal Nether x8
Fel Iron Ore x108
Eternium Ore x72
Primal Earth x5
Primal Water x5
Primal Air x5
Primal Fire x5
Primal Mana x5
Primal Shadow x20
Adamantite Ore x40

To tidy some of that up, the Fel Iron and Eternium Ore are for 18 Felsteel Bars, which are used on the first and second axes in this process.

All your primals except the Shadow go into 5 Primal Might.

The adamantite eventually ends up as 2 Hardened Adamantite Bars.

A compound list looks something more like this:

Nether Vortex x5
Primal Nether x8
Felsteel Bars x18
Primal Might x5
Primal Shadow x20
Hardened Adamantite Bars x2

To summarize: Very costly, in either time or gold.

If you are leveling BS in a WOTLK world, and you decide to go Weaponsmith, but don't know what path to go down; this weapon is undoubtedly better for leveling than https://www.wowhead.com/cata/item=28439# for any dual wielding class because of the internal cooldown of the hammer; it would be better suited for long fights.

Hopefully profession specific weapons like this make a comeback in Cataclysm and we'll have more to consider for specs than just for leveling.

Man, what the crap. This is supposed to be on teh same level at t5 gear (assumed due to vortex use) and it doesn't even compare. Also, it gets beat out by season 2 one hand axe and season 3 is about to come out. I vote blizzard buffs the thing to make it worth even being a blacksmith.

It was better than S2 in my opinion.. However much more costly.. In Sheer nether vortex and primal nethers alone. Not to mention all the ore and regular primals.

I have won, and am actually quite fond of it.

Keep in mind, not everyone can get S2 or S3 either.

This is an axemaster specialization of the Blacksmith prof. u can choose to be a armorsmith or a weaponsmith at a certain kill lvl - offhand i think it was around 200 - then if u choose to go weaponsmith - u can choose hammer axe or sword. All these choices are made - if u are alliance - at the great forge in IronForge.
If you have chosen weaponsmith u need then to go to Winterspring's main town and there in abuilding u choose a specialization ie. Hammer/Axe or Sword. You return to IF or Shattrah City and as your skills rise u can learn the plans for these weapons from the master blacksmiths there. If u are an Axesmith u can only use axesmith's axes when U ARE an axesmith as soon as u unlearn u loose all the plans and the ability to arm yourself with the axesmith axe.
So u pays your money and u takes your choice. But u CAN if for some reason u think u made a mistake unlearn a skill and retrain as another '.....master'
Just costs u CA$H and any use of the weapons or armor u might have made. I hope that clears up the basics of higher lvl blacksmithing.

Therefore, if someone has access to this item, it won't be a hunter, and if it is, they're

The itemlevel on this axe is probably quite similar to what drops halfway in SSC and The Eye.
If a hunter wants to make Planar Edge, that's fine, but wasting as much as 5 nether to upgrade it? I could almost accept it if the guild had raided for so long that everyone had the nethers they wanted, and the hunter wanted to make a 2h for pvp, but this axe, the other weapons and the armor you can craft is just too damn good.
I play a orc fury warrior, hence I would love this axe.
I guess shamans would like it as well.

Simple facts of life are this IS A GAME, if a warrior wants to run around in a priest set killing people with 2 healing daggers and thats what makes him happy playing WOW then so be it.

even if 90% the people who play agree that a warrior shouldnt wear cloth gear and tank in a raid, fact is he/she pays to play how they see fit...although i doubt any guild would want him :P lol.

I have a fair few toons on pvp servers and off ,my mains are a rogue/warrior/hunter, so ive played this game for probably to long and ive turned my hunter into a melee hunter a good year ago, all because i got bored.

It started as a joke, but i gues since i new all the weak spots for my warrior and rogue i also new exactly what to do to screw up other warriors/rogues dps. I have a 95% melee win rate vs rogues and a 65% melee winrate vs warriors, warriors with their high 30% plus crit and nice boost to hit% is giving me a hard time and were obviously talking gladiator plus gear on my oponents.

I mean if i was getting pawned u think id keep doing it? hell no, i pawn and i enjoy droping people infront of their friends and knowing that everyone must think they are the crapest rogue/warrior to ever log into wow, when facts are many are probably some of the better players.

I wouldnt want this weap for my hunter unless it was my only option, stats i find are still very important even for a insane hunter like me, thats why im a swordsmith instead :).

but YES its true we werent built to melee but in a skilled hands we can, so if u say us hunters cant...sorry but you need to learn to play a hunter, if u are a hunter....dam u suck, u cant even melee?lol, but then again most hunters are nubs, who need good gear to pvp and have no idea how to kill anything in the nude, so in that case perhaps the "hunters cant melee" should just be left as it is, atleast till hunters L2play their class. Hell i have a warrior and a rogue i aint going to defend the hunter nubs with no skill.

I probably should include my easiest class to drop are hunters, but saying that my pvp gear doesnt even come close to matching a normal pvp hunters ranged dps. If your going to melee u cant think ranged stats, u have to think melee stats, so i have to keep a spare set of gear just to go on my raids...sigh but ahwel its worth it lol.

Anyways was bored and there ya go, cry noob and spam away, just dont ever let me fraps ya getting pawned, im making a vid :).

I have a 39 hunter twink, and when any melee class gets to close I dont bother with traps, scatter shot or whatever.

The sad truth is that I melee down both rogues and Warriors. If u pop the cooldowns in the survival tree I can even eat noodles while doing it.

With that said he is uber twinked tho. Epic weapons and bow, all blues and hundrets of gold worth of enchants on him.

Now, back to the 10,000 dollar question. How the HELL did we end up discussing this under the "Wicked Edge of the Planes" topic?

I'm just wondering about how the weapon will look like in combat, because when I saw the item in the dressing room and made my character spin around, red smoke started coming out, its kind of cool. Is it like a thunderfury? when you fight, does it leave a mark?

More a mage than a hunter axe? First off, it's a profession item. Second off, if a hunters making a weapon for STATS, it's probably bloodmoon. But if they make this, it's theirs. Crit and ap? Hunter stats fo sho. A very good choice? Not really.
