Its setting was greatly disconnected from the entire game world, barely explained and extremely confusing (literally some vague, convoluted cosmic afterlife with its own rules and entirely new types of beings, not an island, planet or other timeline)

All zones were dull, dark and depressing, with similar color palettes (except Bastion and Ardenweald maybe, but its up to debate)

The afterlife setting was barely explored at all (there's just a handful of lore-important characters there, and they're all just nostalgia props)

It had many big lore retcons that changed the most important parts of the lore, and its scale was too large (suddenly titans aren't the highest beings, they are just ants compared to super-titans called the First Ones who literally created absolutely everything, trust me)

The Jailer was an extremely underwhelming villian, with vague motivations and lame design (big bald guy is Deceptively Cunning, and totally orchestrated every single event up to this point, muddying the lore of one of the most important WoW characters, The Lich King/ Arthas)

Major lore characters who were supposed to serve a connection to the world did barely anything of significance (Baine literally sat on his butt in Orobos for the majority of the expansion, Thrall and Jaina were barely seen outside the raids, and Bolvar was taken out of the freezer only to stand around more important people)

The love/hate cult build upon Sylvanas, by players and devs alike (people shouting YASS QUEEN every time she appeared, or hating her Morally Gray choices with a passion, no inbetween)

The covenant system was a failure (with players being forced to choose the most optimal covenants based on granted abilities, not personal preferences, thus the entire "pull the ripcord" movement)

The expansion had many great cosmetics, but they were EXTREMELY grindy and annoying to get (literally designed for years of farming, and many of them locked behind one of the four covenants)

During this expansion, Blizzard was embroiled with some of the largest controversies in its history, which soured the entire experience (lawsuits, allegations, removing NPC references to old devs)
