Post patch 3.0.2, these are NOT good pally tanking bracers. Item points in spell damage and intellect are much better spent on strength (for both threat and mitigation), which is what almost every single piece of tanking gear was reitemized for. This piece was apparently missed in those changes.

These wrists are not visible with the righteous plate set gloves, Gauntlets of the Righteous. So, you can save yourself some trouble if you aren't a completionist, or if you do not need to hide some other wrist art that may conflict visually with the set.

I would never trade a comparable ammount of defense/dodge/parry rating for spelldamage. I have 337 +spelldamage in tanking gear and 490 defense. I hardly ever lose aggro to a dps char, except to a stream of successive crits by said dps char. So, stack spelldamage and ignore defense and dodge/parry ratings if you want. That'll make proper tanks look good compared to you. Mediocre ammounts of dodge/parry are fine in normal 5man instances, but when mobs start hitting you for 6-7k, you suddently stop worrying about losing aggro, and start worrying about being 2 shotted by some "trash" in a H mode instance.
In my experience 4/5 Righteous armor set, a Continuum blade and some spelldamage rings, pretty much takes care of threat generation for me.

PS: Why is it so hard to make a point without calling other people names...

The smart thing to do is to get the majority of your spell damage from you weapon. At SH the exhalted weapon rep reward is great. (so easy to get, prot pallys out dps the mages there, and people love running it, because it speed runners finish in under and hour). Stick on a + 40 spell damage and you have enough magic damage to tank kara and hold aggro well. As you go up, and get your tier gear, you'll get more magic attack bonus added on, so don't worry too much about the future of your gear. Also, 6k mana is plenty for a tankadin, when you in kara and the healer is spamming heals like theres no tomorrow you mp is is going to be stable, worst case scenario, down a super rejuvenation potion. I'm doing well with about 300 spell damage (almost all of that is from weap) and almost all avoidance gear. Just because your a pally, doesn't mean you shouldn't wear war tank gear, it's far superior damage reduction, and more HP gives the healer a lot more time to work with. If you have to pick one over the other, pick the Green fortress ones.

I would like to get these for my paladin tank. I have Bands of the Agressor, and they are Ok, I guess. But, they do not have two things paladin tanks really like. At least, that I like, which is spell damage OR avoidance.

Once you move on and part from the D3 Set step by step and are most likely left with the shoulders and the chest, you do probably welcome these bracers if you have moved away from using a cster weapon and got SE or KD equipped.

By then every chunk of Spell Damage helps if it is added to an item that also gives some +defense/dodge/parry/block.

I have removed my green fortress ones for those because of the spell damage, the higher general defense rating an the +int.
My other gear gives better block/dodge/parry etc. so I actually am looking for +spell damage and do not want to go back from SE with +40 Spell damage enchant to a caster weapon that most of the times is at least .2 points slower.

It all depends on what other gear you wear. In fitting combination, these bracers can be better than many seemingly superior ones.

In response to those who say that pallies should emphasize avoidance over spell damage, that is too simplistic. I have tanked on my paladin with spell damage anywhere from 180 to 350. Yes, I can hold aggro at 180, but only if the dps is undergeared or holds back. Once your dps starts to acquire epics and casters are pushing their spelldamage up near the 1000 range, 200 +spell doesn't cut it anymore.

While it is true that avoidance and stamina are crucial to tanking for all classes, paladins have the added problem of having to scale up holy damage to maintain aggro. You can always ask the dps to tone down their damage, but what you are really doing is asking to prolong the fight. Not a good strategy with timed boss fights.

As with everything, there is a proper threshold that you must maintain. The nine more stamina and 0.5% dodge from green fortress will do nicely if you have enough spell damage to hold threat comfortably, but if your dps (particularly caster dps) is starting to pull aggro regularly, it might be time to look at upping your spell damage.

I have to emphasize again that these Bracers are great. I did move back to a caster weapon (The Gavel of Unearthed Secrets) but I am still keeping these ones over the Green Fortress or Courage ones.

I am teaming with fully epic and/or T4/T5 geared Mages, Shadow Priests and Locks so every Spell damage helps and those guys can fire away as they want.

I am still uncrushable having 19 Dodge, 18 Parry, 24 Block and something like 12 miss giving me something like 108% avoidence with holy shield up (incl. Libram). Also my stamina is around 14k unbuffed which gives the necessary amount for Kara and early 25ers. I will still stack +dodge/miss/parry but now only if I do not sacrifice any spell damage. There are now quite a few items that offer both. Just as there are some that offer +blockvalue for the warrior's aggro.

The Paladin's advantage over other Tanks is the high initial and continuing aggro. I love using this and run through almost every heroic in around 50 minutes with a full caster Group firing away constantly dealing around 1.5k TPS which boosts to 2.5k and more with Avenging Wrath and a few crits here and there. Also in Karazhan it helps a lot. Shattered Halls being my favourite heroic where almost only AOE is used on every pull.... and if there are not enough guys for aoe, we simply take the 2nd pull with us as well ;-). Can't remember the time anybody wiped being in my regular heroic group (great shammy healer with us). These bracers are a big help!

The courage bracers dropped and I got them but I am continuing to use these. Why?

Simple reason:
As you gear up as a Pally Tank so do your casters and other DDs and you do want to keep your aggro at max when dealing with mobs and bosses or your Mages, locks and shadow priests will have to slow down meaning that the boss will fall later meaning that healers need to endure longer with their mana making things more difficult.

The courage bracers give you +3 Doge which is way to little to be considered and 2 more defense if socketet with a +8 defense gem, and 3 more stamina in that case. The Block Value is good but 33 more damage blocked is ok but also not great(with pallys, it does not add to aggro capabilities. Warrious would love it as +block value it their equivalent to our +spelldamage). Say you would socket a +12 stamina gem the bracers would end up with 6 less defense and 15 more stamina... this is fine if you are a stamina-stupid-tank. The 2.3 Patch and the +10% stamina Talent gives the Paladins a huge boost and enough buffer zone for the healers without socketing everything with stamina gems. Go for avoidence gems! (+8 dodge / +8 parry should always be available at the AH)

Mostly, you will be forced to end up with putting +spelldamage enchant on the courage ones and end up with LESS stamina than these bracers could give!

With these bracers you get a few chunks less armor but therefore +12 int which is a great asset to your extremely tiny mana pool, good +spelldamage and therefore the option to take the +stamina enchant over the +spelldamage one AND higher defense, keeping your def at 490, giving you more freedom to stack avoidence over defense.

Now I'm giving you the final reason for chosing these over the courage bracers once you slap a stamina enchant on them: Stamina: 30 + 12 Enchant = 42! The answer to life, the universe & everything!
