This is one of the very best daggers in the game (or will be after The Burning Crusade release) and is an amazing dagger for a Rogue. It gives them a nice stamina boost while also keeping up their critical strike rating, attack power, restilence and hit rating.

ok well I did the math on the rating system...so to say
Team Rating Arena Point Formulae

X = Team Rating, Y = Arena Points

If X=1500: Y = 2894/(1+259*e^(-0.0025*X))
Else: Y = 0.206*X+99

Ok this is the formula...so at the end of each week if your teams rating is 1500 you can earn 412.5 arena pts each week. So if your team rating stayed at 1500 every week for a whole month you could earn a total of 1,850pts a week so to say. So Im guessing It might not take that long for people to earn these pts if they have a decent group and can win there matches

As far I know you get points after what Rating your team is. So you wont lose points for losing your rating just wont raise. I just started doing Arenas and after my first 2 game witch I both lost my rating was 1466. So even for losing you will increse you Arena points

This only took me approximately 4 weeks of Arena to get, First week was 1700, next week was 1800, third week - 1880, then forth week - 1954.

Mutilate Rogues get screwed hard with the new pricetag on this weapon since they need two slow weapons for best results...

Blizzard should really introduce a 1.80 speed "only for offhand" weapon (like the Gladiator's Shiv) for us Mutilate Rogues, that would also cost 1125 Arena Points like a Shiv. Paying over 5000 Arena Points just for the weapons is insane...

it turns out that the offhand weapon speed contributes very little to the overall damage you will do as a mutilate spec. Your offhand's damage per-hit is pretty small anyway because of it only doing about 50% of your mainhand's damage. Because your mutilate gets the +101 extra damage in both hands, this makes this damage difference pretty negligible.

Example:

For your offhand, the shanker will do an average of 79 damage per hit. (1.8 * 88.3 = average dmg, divide by 2 => average OH dmg)
In comparison, the gladiator's shiv will do an average of 62 damage per hit (1.4 * 88.2 = 123 average MH dmg => 62 average OH dmg). - these are both numbers before AP is added

Once you add in the +101 damage modifier you get from mutilate, you arrive at 180 offhand mutilate damage with the shanker compared to 163 offhand damage with the shiv on mutilates. Mutilate is a normalised attack, so it will calculate the extra damage per-hit as if you were using 1.7 speed daggers in both hands. If you have 1400AP, this adds 100 dps to your weapons. To get the extra damage per-hit you simply mutiply this DPS with your weaponspeed (in this case it will be 1.7 for both). This means both weapons will get an extra 170 damage per-hit on mutilates. Any other modifiers (eg the +50% from poisons) do not affect the difference in weapons..... this brings the BASE damage of mutilate up to:

350 damage for a shanker offhand, and
333 damage for the shiv offhand
------ a difference of only 5% on mutilates --------

When i was mutilate spec my mutilates were approx 30%-50% of my overall damage ( i cant really remember a more accurate number :) This means in terms of my TOTAL damage, using a shanker instead of the shiv offhand would give me ONLY 2% MORE TOTAL DAMAGE. Bear in mind too that the gladiator's shiv will apply poisons about 20% better than the gladiator's shanker because of the weaponspeed difference, and it also means the energy cost of your shiv ability will be 38 instead of the 34 if you were to use the shanker offhand as opposed to the shiv. For an extra 1500 arena points, I really don't think it's worth it :)

i actually screwed up my calculation a little, but cannot edit posts here on wowhead :) i had said that the mutilate damage difference between using a shanker instead of a shiv offhand would be a boost of 5% on your mutilates -- this was wrong, i had missed that i was just calculating the offhand damage of mutilate, not both hands.

It was actually a 4.8% damage boost on your OFFHAND mutilate damage; your mutilates (including MH now) would only be increased in damage by approx 1.6%. In terms of your overall damage, since mutilate will probably be around 30%-50% of your total damage, your total overall damage would be increased by less than 1% - absolutely tiny.

And yes, Clinch's calculations do seem to be a little off. Even if you add 19% damage from having improved kidney shot up and find weakness the numbers are still too low. When i was still mutilate spec i crit someone for 3505 in arenas (unbuffed, probably with an AP trinket going though :). I was using Whispering Blade of Slaying MH and Ced's Carver OH at the time, so it's safe to say that with gladiator weapons it would be a chunk higher than that.

This is just a rumour but i heard somewhere that when S3 equipment hits, the S1 gear/weapons will be able to be bought with honor points.

Dunno where i heard this but it sounds pretty good imo.

Just wondering, how long would you have to do Eye of the Storm battle ground per day to get this in 10 days or less? And the same thing for the Gladiator's Shiv. So a summary. How long would you have to do Eye of the Storm battle ground per day in 10 days or less to get 36000 honor points and 40 x Eye of the Storm Mark of Honor?

The perfect offhand dagger, though at 1.8 speed it is still kinda of fast. Arena points are rather easy to get, so it's an east dream to make a reality. ;p

Just fyi, unless I'm mistaken you would need around 3000 AP to do that kind of damage with an ambush..... Lets try shall we:

((6450/1.2/1.2/1.1/2-335)/3-191)/1.8*14 = 2924 AP
Damage/Opp bonus/Master of Subt bonus/Shadowstep Bonus/2xCrit - Ambush bonus/Ambush multiplier - wep dmg/speed*14

the math: ambush calculated as: ((Wep Dmg)*3+335)*2(crit)*1.2(Shadowstep)*1.1(MoS)*1.2(Opp)

Weapon damage = 191(top end)+AP/14*1.8 (normalized)

that's not taking into account things such as the fact that things like shadowstep master of subt and opp may not stack multiplicatively, as well as the fact that Opp may simply apply the 250 -> 300% or that the multiplier should be 250% rather than 300% before Opp....

R you kidding? 3k ambush possible you say...... im a 67 rogue using grand marshals dirk (lvl60) (im a sub rogue) and can ambush for 3.1k with it. With this shanker i can prob do over 4k....easily....

with mongoose, however you wont notice a substancial damage difference with similar daggers... nothing around 100 - 200 damage, maybe 20. Mongoose is also an awesome enchant, so if u do get this dagger, enchant it with mongoose... its actually survivable since mongoose doesnt have a glow. Also, anyone can get this if u play 10 arena games on any rating / team, since you will get some points. Just might take a while, my 5 v 5 with 1900 rating average gets around 800 a week...

I use that exact combo right now, minus the blind. I just vanish. But it does kick ass, I don't have very good gear, and I am 63 but I am getting high end crits of 2400. not too much, but with greens thats pretty good. With these daggers in each hand, it will kill cloth. And the premed is kinda a waste, with all those things you do it would be easy to get enough to kill a cloth or a leather.

I'd like to add a comment mainly just about how funny these comments are you guys add. The drama from thottbot is halarius. For one, Ravenshaft needs to get a life, people make mistakes buddy. Secondly, no ones needs to add anything offensive...it's a weapon for a game...get over it..but Ravenshaft is an idiot and deserves to get made fun of...and I love how people write basically the same comments written in different ways that don't help people trying to find information on the item in anyway shape or form. Example: This dagger is amazing. Wow thanks, think we can see that already? Besides that..this is a decent dagger you get for gaining points in the arena (Ranked arena matches came out today). Ummm..you have to be level 70 to participate in the arena and to start a team (Which you must have to join in ranked matches) it cost 200g...or you can simply join a friends. Anyway, good luck noobs. :D

Arena points really arent that hard to get.
start a team - 40g/person - so yes, 2v2 team is 80g for the charter, 5v5 200g.
Thats to buy the charter ofc, then you find some people to play with you. shouldnt be too hard now if youve managed to get to 70 to find some people you know who are reasonably decent.
Then you need to play a min of 10 games a week with your team and have an activity ratio of at least 30%, again, not so hard with a little organisation.
And then you need to wait a few weeks. with a rating of approx 1500ish you will get about 400 points a week. so 5 weeks = ownership of this dagger.

plus obv its not unique, so u can get 2 of them or get the somewhat faster one for your offhand.
(and whats the betting there'll be some nicer daggers dropping from the raids your going to anyway by this time)

I'm not saying My buid is better than anyone's. Honestly, I think Blizzard did a good job to make them all competive. I've been each type of rogue (combat, Sub, Assas..) It costs about 100g to renew my talents again. I'm also an experianced player.

yeah, it's a mutilate rogue I guess. I'm sure there are mutilate rogues out there that don't know what they're doing. Perhaps I'm one of them but besides that here's my reasoning for chooing this build.

this is the base combo (it's different for different classes...I'll explain) Cheap shot for the 2 sec stun and the 75% for and additional combo. If all is well you start off with 3 combo points. Mutilate for 2 more combo points and gouge if you have no damaging poisons on. Kidney shot for the extra 3% damage bonus. Hit mutilate twice (timed corectly you should have time) and chances are (with all the crit talents) you'll have 5 combo points. If you find yourself short on energy and want to finish off with eviscerate. Hit blind and rest up. Most of the time you don't need it but it comes in handy and more active with the 3.5 min cooldown due to full Elusiveness. before finishing off hit cold blood (if it's ready) and use Eviscerate. That's my combo for most battles (and preferably one on one duels) And if all is done right, the other player won't even get a chance to touch you.

For warriors it's a different plan.

Warriors have armor obviously. I added serrarted blades to add a bit of help getting past that. Although, they were the last talent points I put in, and most debatable ones. Alright here's how it works.

Put on deadly poisons, both weapons. (normal combo use instant/cripple against rogues, cripple/mind numbing against mages, mindnumbing/wound for healers, cripple/deadly for hunters, and in most pvp situations its debatable but I use wound poison, so those damn healers wont make killing as hard, and deadly poision just because you won't have time to do stuns (like gouge or blind) that break when damage is done.) but back to warriors.

ok (against humans sprint while stealthed to avoid perception) and then cheap shot, mutilate, and get the 5 combo points then kidney punch and mutilate twice (now vanish, because if they get a chance to hit you with any DoTs that can't be removed by shadowmeld, you're screwed. The vanish cooldown helps make up for how many times you use vanish) they'll prolly taunt you out of vanish so whatever time you get to restore energy is great, if they dont get you out just restore energy while vanished and cheap shot, cold blood/envenom his ass (crits are better than eviscerate and it ignores armor due to being nature damage)and mutilate/another kidney shot if needed and whatver you find nescessary to finish him off if not already dead. If he taunts you out, you should have 5 combo points an 5 stacks of deadly poisons. Hit your cold blood for a 100% crit and use envenom to remove all the dealy poison and then blind (because there is no longer any deadly poisons on the warrior and he will wander around for a bit) rest up do what ya gotta do, count to 5 and mutilate/kidney punch/mutilate then either envenom or eviscerate depending on how well the deadly poisons stack in those next few second (Envenom if more poison because it ignores armor) by now...he should be dead...if not gouge (granted you used envenom to remove poison for a combo point...rest...mutilate depending on if you armor allows gouge to last a second longer...and eviscerate...prolly dead now haha...I've met some tough warriors...

I'm basing these off of the stats of my rogue. So far since the expansion with the new gear and the thirst to "Be the Best" I have a crit normally of 25%. There is still room for improvement in my armor and weapons. This is just base stat increases. As an average lvl 70 rogue with all blue lvl 69-70 items and Ced's daggars (71 dps) I have yet to be in an instance where a mage has done more damage than me. I once met a warrior that amazed me and beat be on damage counter. But that's because he was super uber. Yes, my counter includes hunter pets.

Here is my only regret. I'm not a human rogue. As a rogue its amazing to start off with the first strike. When fighting other rogues you need to see them first. In my case...I need to hide until I know perception has run out...ha ha. Full master of decpetion is nescesary in both assas and sub rogues because at all cost you must STAY HIDDEN while not fighting. As leather users it is our best defense.

Like I said. I never thought my way is THE ULTIMATE way to be a rogue. It's just my favorite, open to criticism. Like the cost of renewing my talents say...I'm always learning from others and trying new things. So far this has worke dfor me.

In my opinion after respecing, Mutilate is better for Arena. Shadowstep ambush is amazing and does a vast ammount of damage but the unfortunate downside is...if you do not kill them with in the first 2 or so seconds you are probably going to lose. SS spec has a giant opening blow but no sustainable damage through a long fight. you get 3 trys to kill someone minus running away from combat to restealth. Mutilate can hit for easily 1k on cloth every 3 ticks and if you start them out in stunlock you have better control of the battle. It is also more viable versus plate where your ambushes dont hit nearly as hard and when that happens you have no damage at all. Stunlock Mutilate is more balanced for all armor types in my opinion.

Shadow step rogues completley own in the arena. Especially if they are part assasination and have lethiality and imp backstab. With a good dagger, a SS rogue can get a 3.5k ambush, and then is usually able to get a backstab (2-2.5k) off before anyone can notice. If you have premed, then you already have 4-5 CP's, and you can kidney shot and gain 25 energy (with relentless strikes) and get 2 more backstabs off during the kidney shot. Then, if the target isnt dead, blind and restealth and repeat (minus premed)

you guys are talking about 3.5k ambushes with this, which is a little bit on the low end for this dagger. Assuming you have gear that is ~as good as this dagger is, your ambushes will be much higher. With my current gear and weapons (Twin-Bladed Ripper/Claw of the Netherwing Flight) my shstep ambushes can easily crit clothies for 3.4-3.7k on one of my higher crits.

If you get jumped by any combat rogue first your screwed, if the combat rogue has more stamina your screwed overtime, if you screw up your cs or w/e stuns u use, ur screwed. theres alot of downfall with daggers =( its an upfront dam thats ment to kill casters in a few seconds, depending on your weapon, say if you use the glads dagger it will kill a warlock in 2 secs if you just use ambush and backstab, should be no problem. btw i love CLOAK OF THE SHADOWS, finally blizzard gave hope to rogues against casters =D much love blizz

I am wondering whether to get this s1 dagger or Riftmaker for my mainhand. (Shadowstep/Assasination Rogue) I currently have Ced's Carver (MH) and Grand Marshal's Shiv (OH). I'm looking to upgrade my mainhand and am not sure which would be best for me. I PvP (mostly battlegrounds and world PvP) way more than I raid. Any comments about how they compare?

I could whine on about how good the dagger is and some combos. instead i say atleast try 16/0/45ur pretty much full backstab/ambush shadowstep high crits but not every ambush/backstab is crit even with this dagger and gear.

and yes this dagger is amazing with a mongoose the thing is tho all classes r different gear wise how the player uses his abilities and what not (all that kind of skill/gear/experience stuff) i get low crits i get high crits im just saying if u get this dagger atleast try the spec. may not be ur cuppa tea but im just trying to help. i like the dagger i have this and the gladiator offhand sword with mongoose (and full S1 with nice chants)
