this quest is started by talking to vael before he is engaged you then have 5 hours to. once he is dead you just have to go up and loot the shard to turn back in to anachranos in Tanaris, the shadow resist necklace is excelent for any warlock who is going to be tanking for twin emperors.

be wary i have heard that only one person may complete this quest per BWL run. i'm not 100% sure this is a fact but it is better to be cautions then have soemone mad about not completing the quest

Just like the quest to kill boss 3 in BWL. The quest item can only be got by one. Better announce the quest item rule by Raid Leader before killing nef. BTW, 5 hours run from vael to nef is not mission impossible, quite easy one.

i did this quest a month ago. you start by getting Broodlord's Head and doing Only One May Rise. You then talk to Vael in BWL (2nd Boss) before the MT starts the encounter. Nef starts yelling about a chip in the shard, come and get him throughout the 5 hour quest timer. when you down Nef, you then loot the scepter shard and go back and complete the quest and pick your reward.

Did this part of the quest 12-man some months ago.

Quite doable for a group of people kitted in BT/MH gear, we did it in approx. 2 hours, on top of that, we all made about 100g in raw cash and some nexus crystals.

i've just begun this quest chain but i plan on doing it until its finished!

Then i plan on Xfering to a new Server when there is one made then run up and Bang the Gong start the AQ event....needless to say its a little much to go through for a the title of "Scarab Lord" and a Mount that would make all the new players ask "What rep do you need to get that mount!one!"

i'm looking forward to this and also being greatly hated by everyone on the relm for banging their gong and making questing that much harder for them lol

Everyone eligible in the raid can pick up the quest. However, I ran BWL yesterday and yes, it still only drops one shard per raid. This means everyone else who got the quest will need to abandon it and try again after the Tuesday reset.

If you fail the quest timer, this drops from Nefarian. Give it a read, it's hilarious. I'm almost tempted to find a way to get on the quest chain and purposefully fail just so I can get my own copy :D

The five hours countdown seems only to run while you're inside the instance. We started a raid and cleared up to Lashlayer. Having no Onyxia Scale Cloaks, we decided to return later that week for the rest when our guild's leatherworker with the cloaks in her bank would be able to attend and so we killed Nefarian about 5 days after Vaelastrasz but our shaman was able to loot the shard anyway. Pleasant surprise on a run where only Elementium Ore was expected.

An easy way to prevent ninjas is to roll as soon as you enter the instance (or before) and have everyone abandon the quest except the one that won the roll. Have everyone gather up and check in the quest log if there's anyone with the quest nearby. If there is, simply have everyone walk away one by one and see when the left to the quest disappears or is reduced, and either kick that person for trying to ninja, or tell him to abandon it, and check if he's done it by walking close to him and see if the appears or increases. Repeat until everyone has abandoned it.

Alternatively (this only works if you have to pick up the quest on the same run as you complete it, and I don't know if that's true), you can have the winner of the roll be the only one to ever go near Vael before he's engaged. He or she will pick up the quest and then engage the boss.

Can`t do this quest at taiwan server. Other quest still work, but only Nefarius's Corruption can`t. When I talk to Vaelastrasz can`t see the quest option.
Or this quest only can work when player clear the other quest(Green Scepter Shard and Blue Scepter Shard)? Is anyone have the same problem?

I cant acquire this quest on a US realm either. My current theory is that running out after Razoregore to get the adds to stop spawning is jiggering with some mechanic, making him take the quest away. Second week in a row i've been denied my red shard >_<

Upon accepting the quest, Lord Victor Nefarius yells:

Looking for this: Red Scepter Shard? Come and get it...

Some time later in the raid he yells:

I wonder, heroes, what will you do when I manage to destroy this shard? Will the world be beyond Salvation?

followed by the emote:

Lord Victor Nefarius's laughter echoes through the halls of Blackwing.

I'd really like to know if there are other quotes of his like this, particularly upon destroying the shard after 5 hours.

Update: didn't see the above quote last time I ran but saw this one instead:

What's this? A chip in the shard? Finally, a weakness exposed... It won't be long now.

If you've found others, please share them, as finding a raid that is willing to wait 5 hours just so you can fail a quest and read the text is kind of rare.

Just had a GM confirm that:

1. the quest is still available
2. it does not have any prerequisite other that the quest chain is completed up to and including "Charge of the dragonflights"
3. It is working correctly.

So here is to hoping that it works for me next ID.

Can anybody confirm if the red scepter shard actually drops post 4.0.1? I have received my second ticket answer which like the first states that "this quest has been disabled by development, and is slated to be removed. We will not be awarding this quest item." This concerns me a lot since I have come so far on the scepter of the shifting sands questline and there have been no public announcements on this quest being removed or altered in any way!

I also had problems with this quest last week, picked up the quest and killed nefarian. No shard dropped, I contacted a GM. And he also mentioned that the quest was removed from the game, I was trying to get a new GM but I gave up after 4 days of waiting.

Also had mobs from razorgore encounter keep respawning if anyone where close to the gate.

Hopefully the next reset i will get it done.

Those who are complaining that your shards aren't dropping: If you're SURE no one else looted it...

Some of these quest items insist that the person the corpse is assigned to checks the corpse before it shows up on the loot table for everyone else. That is, say you're trioing it, and when you kill Nef, it says "Loot: PlayerC." It's waiting for PlayerC to check the corpse first, just incase PlayerC has the quest. Once PlayerC checks the corpse, the shard should appear for PlayerA or PlayerB to loot--whoever gets there first.

This happened with Onyxia's chapter of Draconic for Dummies, so it's possible this is the same since the same quest team would've designed it around the same time.

If you are having trouble accepting the quest, ticket a GM and request that they check your quest log (i.e. the list of your completed quests). A GM told me that according to his database I had completed the quest "a long time ago, too far back for him to tell me the exact date" (verbatim translation). It could be that the quest was flagged as completed for you when you first killed nefarian with the quest requirements fulfilled.

This quest is no longer attainable, as of patch 4.0.1, even if you did the pre-quests, confirmed today with the help of a GM. He told me all these quests (listed as the chain) have been "deprecated".

For those, who don't know yet - you have a 5 hour timer to clear bwl and slay nefarian to optain the shard - otherwhise you'll only find a letter on his desk...

It should be noted that this whole thing about clearing BWL in 5 hours works about as good as anything else in this game. That is to say, 5 hours can meen 5 hours, an afternoon, a few days, or a week at the most. We've had 2 people loot this part in my guild this far, and we've never completed BWL in 5 hours.

Both these incidents have involved 2 trips to the instance (the first one ending after Vael). The timer appears to be bugged somehow, so that it can reset when you reenter BWL. It could be that if you get out of BWL before neffy destroys the shard, the timer resets (don't even know if we did this), or it could just be that it resets at random if you're lucky or whatever. Don't know what causes it, just that it happens. Hope I get my part soon :)

the timer does stop if EVERYONE leaves......but if one person sits in there chatting or whatnot - the timer still runs. My guilds runs this quest every week for ppl....its not that hard if you farm nef.

and to the ppl who keep saying whats the point of doing this quest if the gates are open...have you even checked out that epic resist pieces and whatnot you can get from this? IMO its easier to complete if the gates are already open b/c you dont have to farm more bugs than your 200 original carapaces....

The choice is obvious for hunters shaman leather and cloth wearers. But what's good for tanks. It didn't really occur to me to wear anything but plate to tank until I saw these pants. The agil/stam are great and the shadow resist is insane. What should plate wearers wear?

The time limit is from the start of the quest before engaging Vael to the death of Nefarian. Unfortunately, starting the Nefarian encoutner before the 5 hour limit and ending it after does not work. He has to die in <= 5 hours.

only one guy / session can do the quest/can loot the red shard.

funny part for us is that we did it in 2days.
first day was 4hrs run upto nef and wipe at zerg ;(
2days later we killed him first try and were able to loot the shard.

Just like in vanilla, only 1 shard drops if someone in the raid has picked up the quest from Vael. Picking up the quest does not start the encounter. Several people can pick up the quest if they have completed the pre-requisites, but still only 1 shard will drop. The shard is of epic quality and can be master looted to the people that have picked up the quest from Vael.
